Summary: Classic Sci-fi
Review: When I picked up this book out of sheer curiosity three years ago over Christmas weekend, I simply could not put it down. My family actually got quite irritated because I had my nose so embedded in this book for 3 full days.

Some people will say this book is too tedius and detailed without much characterization.

I give this book five stars. It is action packed, it has an excellent plot, politics, conspiracy, machinery and it even gives time to a romantic thread. It is shockingly vivid at times and an hysterical satire at others.

Terl is the most maniacle, calculating and frusturating villain which I've had the pleasure of reading about. Johnny Goodboy Tyler embodies everything we find honorable in the human spirit and characteristics our society so pines to return to; innocence, trust, that adventure bound spirit, and most importantly the unbreakable will to survive despite all obstacles.

It was some of the best money I've ever spent on entertainment... But if you buy the book, remember that you do need to get some sleep, so try not to stay up too late.

Happy reading!

P.S. I can't wait for the movie. The suspense is killing me! I only hope it does the book justice.

Summary: Worth the time and effort!
Review: This monster of a book took me about three weeks to read but I think it was worth the time I spent. Hubbard's biting sarcasm and I think that the best example of Hubbard's writing falls in the character of Terl, the psychotic Psyclo blinded by greed. Taking the reader into Terl's mind is an excellent point to ponder. I thought that the plot was excellently driven, the characters entertaining, and the action sequences written very well.

Summary: Introduction to Hubbardian Psychosis 101
Review: A long winded, mechanical plot, with as many improboble twists as the core secret in Scientology, that you ifested with the spirits of dead space aliens.

Rx for those considering purchase - Read some Heinlen And run like blazes..

Summary: Prepare for Battle--read Battlefield Earth
Review: "Man," said Terl, "is an endangered species." So begins one of the top selling science fiction novels of all time, "Battlefield Earth" by New York Times best selling author, L. Ron Hubbard. With over five million copies of this award-winning saga sold, in 20 languages, "Battlefield Earth" captures the imagination with a compelling storyline, one where a handful of humans must overtake a superior race of aliens who have inhabited the planet for a millennuium. The year is 3000 and one Jonnie Goodboy Tyler ventures out into the world, tired of hearing tales about 'monsters' no one has ever seen. Soon enough he comes face-to-face with the Security Director of Earth, Terl. Now in production as a major motion picture, starring John Travolta as Terl and Barry Pepper as Jonnie, this book is a must-read for the science fiction afficionado. Pepare for Battle, read the book now

Summary: This book was awful
Review: I thought this book would be in the same genre as Aliens, boy was I wrong. It was so poorly written I couldn't believe it ever got published. And what is with all of the 5 Star reviews, No way it deserves even 1 star but that was the least I could give.

Summary: Who would buy this dreck?
Review: Do yourself a favor, and skip this one, unless you like reading really badly written books.

Used bookstores sell this junk for about 50 cents. That may be more that this book is worth.

I wonder how many Scientologists have been told to post great reviews here and to buy the book to drive the numbers up, exactly like they have for other books?

Summary: 50% decent,50% rotten
Review: The more I think about this book, the more I dislike it. The actual story concept is interesting, but the wheels come off the car after that. Hubbard did a couple of twists with it, but in the end, these twists caused an anti-climatic ending. Character development was terrible. Terrible. If Jonnie and company were any more two-dimensional, then they would be cardboard. No character development, bad dialogue, and even some stereotyping. I wasn't expecting much in the charcter deptartment, and I didn't get much.

Another problem was that things were a little too contrived. Things were too predictable--way too predictable. I got caught by surprise once, which is the slight twist I mentioned earlier. Problem is, that slight twist is confusing, and creates a very weird, anti-climatic ending. Don't expect this thing to end like a Star Wars movie.

Ah, and one last thing. If you were wondering about Scientology and anti-government and anti-psychology messages being in this book, then wonder no more. The last half of the book is riddled with such nonsense. In fact, alot of the last half turns out as drivel because it becomes apparent that Hubbard cooked up this whole story just so he could go on a twit tirade through the last 300 pages.

I'll be honest, Hubbard could have done alot more with this, especially if it hadn't been an excuse to spout off Scientology foolishness. As it stands, it has some interesting concepts and is decent in the first half of the book, but then comes apart. Believe me, anything this book does, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Mad Max did alot, lot better.

Summary: Cut This Book Some Slack!
Review: Battlefield Earth was much better than I thought it would be.I will even say that I liked it very much. I'm not a Scientologist ora fan of banal space opera. In fact I'm a big fan of the critically acclaimed and highly intelligent Dune series.

Now, 'B.E.' is no Dune (that's for sure!), but it is much more sophisticated than its detractors want you to know. I think 'B.E.' has a lot of strengths; despite its old fassioned pulp novel style and weak charaterization. It portays a universe dominated by ruthless monopoly corporations; and in doing so provides an amusing and enlightening social/economic satire. The Psychlos (creatures that seem to control most of the Cosmos' vast economic system) are exaggerated 80's yuppies--greedy, gluttonous and quarrelsome. They are stripping the Earth for its raw materials with no respect for our planet's fragile ecology and treat humans like vermin under their enormous feet. They have presumably done the same to an infinite number of planets and sepcies in the galaxys under their control. One of the aliens gets the notion that humans (previously thought of as totally useless pests) might make good slaves for one of his private money making schemes (his superiors can't know about it) so he secretly trains and educates a group of primitive humans who turn out to be smarter than he thinks and hungry for revenge against an enemy which has oppressed their world for over 1000 years. And this is merely the set-up. Hundreds of plot twists keep the reader guessing till the very end. The book is crammed with action, fascinating alien species, satire and exotic technology. Science fiction fans should give it a shot and see if they like it. Its not for every sci-fi fan, but it may be better than you have been led to believe.

Summary: A true visionary
Review: Of all the sf books I have read this one rates as the best. I have traveled to distant planets with Greg Bear, Asimov, Zahn, and many more. I have seen what many of the greatest sf writers of all time have dreamed. And Battlefield Earth, a story of the struggle for human existence, is the epitomy of these visions. The, what if..., the, what could be..., of our future as is seen by a true visionary.

I have not read any other L. Ron Hubbard book for many reasons. This was the first book of his I was lucky enough to have read and no other could possibly equal it in its greatness. I wish not to be saturated with his other visions, instead I choose to let this novel stand alone on top a mountain of many innovative stories written by many of the best sf writers.

Summary: Brilliant! Exciting! Couldn't put it down!
Review: Battlefield Earth was the most exciting book I have ever read in Science fiction, and I have read a lot! Heinlen, Nivens, Pournelle, Foster, Asimov, Bradbury, Etc. This book was not only captivating, but it was very entertaining. Never a dull moment. There was always excitement around every corner and the story grew and grew, exceeding my expectations with every chapter. Hubbard demonstrated his brilliance with the many turns of the plot, but at the same time keeps teh story moving at a rapid rate in an ever expanding direction that combines all the greatests moves in action, adventure and Science Fiction. What a joy to read! I sincerely recommend this book. I love a story that really captures me and makes me feel like I am there, shoulder to shoulder with the characters experiencing the adventure along with them. Hubbard captures that excitement, and serves it page after page. What an incredible book! I loved it!
