Summary: This book sucks
Review: This book helped me through a difficult period in my life. Namely, insomnia. After reading the first few pages of this book, I was quickly asleep. Anyone who truly thinks that this book is good science fiction is either a) stupid or b) a Scientologist. And while there are many stupid people out there, I don't think that there's nearly 300 of them who want to review this book for Amazon. In fact, there are more 5 star reviews here than there are for some Shakespearean plays, and even than for most Tom Clancy or Steven King books (all three of the aformentioned writers can, by the way, write, unlike Mr. Hubbard). This book seriously sucks. I can't stress that enough. Don't buy it.

Summary: First Half OK, but the book goes overboard in the end.
Review: I just finished reading this book, once you get past the major battle in the first half the author goes overboard. That the low tech humans in the book could overcome the all obstacles the author puts before them is totally unbelievable.

Summary: Only uneducated SF snobs hate this book
Review: I have read SF for 35 years - some good, some not so good. But I love SF, and even the not so good had a good point or 2. This book is an excellent example of 1980s SF. I also attend many SF conventions and have seen this SF hate snobbery over entire weekends. The Star Trek group hates the Star Wars group. If you like DS9 you are not a true fan. This author is better than that author and if you like 'that' author you'll probably burn in hell or whatever.

I never read a review prior to attending a movie or reading a book. In this case, I'm very glad I didn't because I enjoyed both and was very surprised at the hate this generated.

I think some people just don't like "Good over Evil" books/movies. Star Wars is just as simple as BE and has just as predictable characters and I love it too!

So, read for yourself with an open mind and go for the enjoyment of good basic SF.

Summary: A great page-turner
Review: I gather that Hubbard's works have some contraversy surrounding them. Having never read anything else from him, I cannot see why from this book.

When I saw the movie, I thought it was better than the average reviews, despite the big plot problems. Now that I've read the book I'm wondering where the movie came from.

This book made my 'classics' list instantly. I was debating buying it because of it's size, but I am so glad I did. The ending was completely unexpected until literally the end.

The book has two basic parts, the first is taking back earth from the Psychlos. This bears a little [but that's all] resemblance to the movie. After that is the aftermath and how Earth deals with the rest of the universes. There is a lot of humor in the book, making it seem like a sophisticated sitcom [Especially when dealing with the small grey men... I love those guys :]. From the moment I picked the book up I had a hard time putting it down, and the last few days in reading it I stayed up several hours later than usual.

Pick it up, get a few chapters into it, and you won't want to give it up. And avoid the movie like the plauge.

Summary: Battlefield Earth : A Saga of the Year 3000
Review: If you love fun, adventurous Sci Fi, then you'll love this book. I finally started to keep track of how many times I had read it and I realized that I have gone through it 9 times, getting more out of it each time.

In sheer enjoyment, it is one of the best! One to re-read when there is nothing to read.

Johnny Goodboy Tyler redeems the human race by thwarting the Psychlos who have practically destroyed the planet in their industrial greed. It is full of action and adventure, without relying on sex, blood or hate. (we actually come to understand that the Psychlos are not responsible for what they have become)

I disagree with other reviews that say that L.Ron Hubbard didn't insert any Scientology into his novel. There is a definite blast at programmed behavior being used to evil ends. There is also a good deal of emphasis on the fact that anyone can succeed if they don't have preconceived notions of their own limits.

Any time that I have nothing to read, I think that I will always go back to this novel. Working my way slowly through it and enjoying is as much as I enjoyed anything written by Jules Verne or by Douglas Adams.

Makes you want to stand up and shout with joy for the triumph of the human race, and I don't see that as a bad thing!

Summary: A Page-turner!
Review: I found this book to be a non-stop action, sci-fi page-turner. I couldn't put it down. The story has a classic line of the triumph of good over evil. But it also had humor as portrayed by the evil Terl, the antagonist of the book. The addition of humor in sci-fi was something I had never seen done before and I liked that. Although it was over 1000 pages in hard copy, it never seemed that long. It was just old-time classic sci-fi entertainment and fun. No gratuitous violence or sex, so it is a book for all members of the family.

I highly recommend it.

Summary: The movie does this book no justice
Review: Its a shame that this book has so much stigma associated with it, due to the movie that was adapted from it as well as Hubbard's personal belief system.

My advice to you is that if you would like to read an entertaining sci-fi opera, pick up this book and read it. Its better than a lot of [stuff] you'll find on the bookshelves...Its not Asimov's "Foundation" (few books are), but it is certainly entertaining.

Give it a read and see what you think.

Summary: Hilarous, Pulp, Sci-Fi At It's Best
Review: ... I must say that Battlefield Earth is one incrediblebook. It is not the most well-thought-out novel in the world, but itis extremely entertaining and a real page-turner. Also, it can be said that although the book is over 1,000 pages long (and with SMALL type!) it very rarely gets boring.

That said, there are some things about it that may turn off some people. Namely, some of the things in the book are incredibly cheesy. The hero's name is "Jonnnie Goodboy Tyler" for God's sake! Speaking of names, so many characters in this book have ridicilous names "Duneeldeen, Glencannon, Zzt, Robert The Fox, Schleim, Jambitchows", not to mention the Basher "Bash Our Way To Glory Tank", the alien "psychlos", and Jonnie's father "Timothy Brave Tyler". Also, there are some rather poor stereotypes in this book.

Again, I believe that the action, suspense, and the epic scope that this book portrays will EASILY counter out any cheesiness that the story has. Think "Star Wars", with a good dose of Douglas Adams.

Summary: The Best Book Written In The English Language
Review: I truly believe Battlfield: Earth, is the great novella ever written. It is long. If you judge a book by how many pages it contains, you are stupid. It is as simple as that. Some of the greatest books would be overlooked simply because they are to long. Battlefield: Earth is perfect in length. It is not pulp to any degree. People that believe Battlefield: Earth is pulp, are the same people that thought 2001: A Space Odyssey was to hard to understand, and didn't like due to that fact. Battlefield: Earth had ever aspect of a masterpiece. I am not a Scientologist. I have only read one L. Ron Hubbard book. But this book, in my opinion, that I read, was flawless. From any angle you look at it, this books is not excellence, but perfection. I ask you to think of your favorite book, or movie. Now I promise you what you loved about that book, or movie, is embodied in Battlefield: Earth. Read it, and it will change you.

Summary: yeah ok, so its long.
Review: I read this when I was a kid and I thought it was fantastic. I remember back then, and this was a long long long time ago, it said on the cover that it was soon to be a major motion picture. I thought I would go see it when it came out but after 3 or 4 years I forgot all about it. Then many years later, I started hearing all the hooplah about this new Epic Sci-fi movie Battlefield Earth and I remembered this book I had read ohhhh so long ago, but I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was about. So I picked up a copy while on a business trip where I knew I would have a lot of time to kill. Well I read it again. It wasn't as good as I remembered. It was long, very long, and even when it could have ended it just kept going and going. This may be one of the longest sci-fi books ever written, but it isn't one of the best. Sometimes they say what makes a good movie great is what gets left behind on the cutting room floor. I think the same could be said about this book. It needed some trimming. Since movies are usually never as good as the book, I don't think I will be rushing out to see it any time soon.
