Rating: Summary: UTTERLY DISAPPOINTING Review: Old L. Ron must have paid out a sizeable chunk of change to have so many people write such good reviews about this colossal piece of CRAP! PLEASE! "Breathe gas"? "Small gray man"? "Terrify-Class battle-plane"? Planet "Snautch" where the "Galactic Bank" is located? What?!! Did this guy lose his thesaurus?! My 8-year-old niece has written more thought-provoking stuff than this. I read it because I thought there would be SOME redeeming quality about the story/author, having read all the miserable reviews of the movie(which I did not see). Well, to use a phrase from page 1: "What in the name of diseased crap are you reading?" I only wish someone had tried to warn me in the same way.
Rating: Summary: Battlefield Earth Review: I read the book Battlefield Earth written by L. Ron Hubbard. This book pulled me in right from the start because I like science fiction and that the story takes place in a different time period. The setting is 3000 A.D. Aliens named Psychlos took over Earth and in the year 2000, and most people are dead.It is in the U.S. in the Rocky Mountains and the Psychlo compound. This book has a creepy mood and the people don't really control their own lives, but follow a leader. There are two main characters in this novel, Terl, a Psychlo, and Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, a human being. Terl is the Head Security chief of the planet Earth, and is 9 feet tall and very muscular. Jonnie is a very smart boy who wants to explore the great plain beyond the mountains. " 'You're too smart,' Parson Staffor rapped at him."
Rating: Summary: Perfect Sci-Fi Review: Many people when looking at this book are turned off by the size(1050 pages), you should not let this happen to you, here's why: This book has great development and an exciting plot that keeps the pages turning( after page 10 I never looked back). I enjoyed evey moment of this novel and was impressed with the author's writing talent, the reader is provided with just enough information throughout the book to keep interest/excitement up while not giving away so much that the reader becomes bored. I especially enjoyed the last 300 pages or so and could see a definite shift in the writer's own excitement about where the book was going. My only disappointment was that the book ended :)
Rating: Summary: I laughed, I cried, I kissed 3 bucks good-bye Review: I laughed at the STUPID plot. I CRIED that I wasted the 3 bucks I KISSED GOOD-BYE when I bought it at a used book store. The only people who would want to read this drivel, would be hardcore scientologists. If you want good sci-fi, stick with Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, or (one of my fav's) Piers Anthony. I'd just as soon read one of the Dick and Jane books as read another one of Hubbard's. Unless you are a fan of Dick and Jane, I suggest you make like their dog and "Run, Spot, Run" far away from it. Oh, I did find a good use for it. I used the pages to help start fires in my grill. I have enough to last through next summer.
Rating: Summary: Battlefield Earth Review: I liked the book alot. I have been an avid sci-fi reader for 20 years. I have read all of the best authors many times over and over. Hubbard's book matches with the best of them. I don't understand any of the negative reviews. I wonder if these are from objective veiwers of Hubbard's science fiction works. I can't help but think that some might be from those who are not regular science fiction readers and/or have something psychological about Hubbard's Scientology. I don't know... But, I do know a great sci-fi read when I see one! Check it out yourself.
Rating: Summary: A great read! Review: Battlefield Earth is a fun, great read! I am sure you will come to love Johnny Goodboy and the evil Terl as much as I have.
Rating: Summary: Pulp Fiction Epic Review: While John Christopher covered this theme more effectively with his "Tripods" novels, "Battlefield Earth" nevertheless makes highly enjoyable reading.
Rating: Summary: An unbearably boring book... Review: ~This must be one of the most boring books I've ever read. The author has a writing style akin to a 10th grader, and believe me, the book is filled with almost every clinche known to man. The events described in the book are silly and predictable, hence it's impossible to get drawn into the story in any way. The characters in the book are all stereotypes, and it is impossible for me to empathise with any of them at all. The hero in the story, Jonnie, is too flawless to be believable, and he gets~~ through every obstacle in his way either through his demigod abilities or through pure luck alone....even a dead duck can come up with a better plot, i think. The first chapter is the only part of the book that is slightly decent, and one is tempted to put up with the bad writing just to see how things turn out, but the novelty soon wears off as one gets hit with clinche after clinche, plot twists that are an insult to one's intelligence, that it slowly becomes quite unbearable. I've read~~ supermarket flyers that are better written than this, and I'm really sorry that I bought this book. Now how this book is awarded 4 or even 5 stars is beyond me. It's certainly not because I hate SciFi, (I love asimov and RAH) but to classify this book as SF would be an insult to the genre.~
Rating: Summary: Good Stor(y/ies) but not edited enough Review: This book probably would work better as two or three books. The part in the middle was boring because it had too many details and two many repeated concern. The whole transition between the war with the Phychlos(1 - 400) and the war with the other species in the galaxy (7?? - 1050) could have been cut or very shortened. The first war could be book 1 and the second war could be book 2 and the esablishment of the government of earth could be shortened and put into book 2. The Brown Limper Staffor subplot was good but seemed irrelevent to the whole story. It would have been really neat if 'book 1' and 'book 2' were released and then the Brown Limper Staffor subplot was released as a third book between 1 and 2. Like "Shadow of the Empire" was a story between "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" Anyway, most of the book was really exciting and worth the time it took to read. It had a comical aspect in some scenes. Hubbard's religious beliefs showed once in a while in the book, such as when he said something like tolneps evolved from whales or something. The characters were somewhat unidimensional though. The words "Jonnie missed Chrissie" or "Jonnie worried about Chrissie" were thrown around so often that I started to dislike Chrissie. Chrissie was so shallow and annoying that you wonder how Jonnie could possibly like her. Sir Robert "the fox" was not explained and It's hard to tell why he was so great or why he had to be such an important character in the book. So in short, I liked the story enough to give 4 stars, but some of the characters were in need of delousing because they were lousy. HA HA
Rating: Summary: Great Audio Book Review: Roddy McDowall is perfect in reading this incredible book. It entertained the entire family on a long car trip. What could have been a long monotonous trip, was very enjoyable.
