Rating: Summary: Good but expected more.. Review: I really was excited when i got a hold of the skies of pern, but i was disappointed in the fact that the book has so many plots are simply confusing. And dispite the fact that the book is over 400pages long, the plots are not thoroughly handled as it is suppose to be. For example, i really want to know the end of the Abominators and their assistence from Lord Tornic, and in my opinion, the fact that Tornic is with the Abominators has nothing to do with the flow of the actual story-it just makes the book longer. And i want to know specificly how does F'lessan works out his disability at the end. There were more -how do i put it- unfinished plots than there should be. I feel that Anne McCaffrey lost her mysterious magic ability to make a story interesting and fun, like the first books that she published. Another one... to me, there seems to be no main character. Well, F'lessan appears sometime but not often enough. It just seems to be a genaral explanation of what's going on in Pern. I really would've loved to see Tai in the spotlight with her green dragon though... In conclusion, i'll say it's a good book for Pern fans, but just a plainly confusing story for non-Pern readers.(Even I, in some point, wanted to quit the book, which i usually never do unless it's really boring.) I recommend the Harper Hall books for readers first meeting Pern.
Rating: Summary: Pern At It's Best Review: McCaffrey never disappoints although I must say that this volume is oner of the better of the Dragons of Pern stories. I recommend all of Mrs. McCaffrey's books highly - sight unseen they are always a guaranteed great read.
Rating: Summary: least fav of pern series Review: i was dissapointed with this book, as well as Pegasus in Space, and the Tower and the Hive. all 3 left a bad taste in my mouth and all have pretty much the same bad elements. there dosent seem to be ne substance in this book and reads like a list of facts and events. the summary makes the book to be about a "grave danger" and about the love relationship. the metorite never fet that compelling and the love story was so washed out that it was a mere outline, plus this book dosent really have a ending and to properly finish this horror there has to be another book, but im afraid of buying ne more of her books
Rating: Summary: Standing up for Pern Review: I thought that someone better stick up for this book. I, like most of the reviews I've read, found some problems in this book. But, I at least have come to look past small discrepancies, like Lytol's deceased dragon changing colour many times. I think that any Mccaffrey fan has learned to do this. In this case I was just happy that there was another book, I had just finished the rest (and going through withdrawlal symptoms) and had to order this one from overseas, and it was worth it. Just to be on Pern again, I was missing all my dragon friends. True fans should have no problems with this book (we're use to it)!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Clumsy and Unconvincing Review: I'm a die-hard Pern fan and I'm always eager to read more about one of my favorite worlds, but I found this book to be a big disappointment. Yes, it's Pern, but I acutally felt let down when I finally finished this book.1- TOO MANY PLOTS This book has too many things in the oven. There's a plot about a meteor strike and subsequent tidal wave. There's a plot about the technology-hating "Abominators". There's a plot about telekenesis. There's a plot about F'lessan and Tai's relationship. The meteor/tidal wave plot is only loosely tied to the telekenesis plot, and only in the last few pages of the book. The Abominators plot isn't tied to the others at all. It's just kind of thrown in but for no apparent good reason. 2- FOCUS This is a book that can't decide what it wants to be about. On the one hand, it's an event-driven story in which the characters react to the natural disaster and newfound abilities of dragons. But on the other hand, it seems to try to be a character-driven story about F'lessan and Tai. It can't really succeed as both, and it doesn't. One of the strengths of the early Pern books was a focus on particular characters (Lessa in DragonFlight, F'nor and Brekke in Dragonquest, Jaxom in The White Dragon, Menolly in Dragonsog and Dragonsinger, Peimur in Dragondrums, Moreta and Nerilka in their books). Since then the books have drifted away and in doing so have lost much of their appeal. 3- INADEQUATELY ADDRESSES SOCIAL CHANGE This books fails to believably address the divide between the "Abominators" and the "Progressive-minded people". We saw only extremes and all "Abominators" were protrayed as straight-out wackos. Where are the people who don't like technology but aren't wackos? In a mere 20 years Pern has undergone a change that took centuries on Earth--I'd have to guess that the vast majority of the population would not be familiar with or comfortable with their sudden leap into "modern" technology. Where are these people? Surely there must be some people on Pern who don't like technology but aren't freakish wanks out to kill, maim and terrorize anyone who thinks otherwise. 4- SUDDENLY WE NOTICE AN ABILITY DRAGONS HAVE HAD FOR HOW MANY YEARS? In 2500+ years, how has no one ever noticed that dragons have telekenesis? The excuse that "they've never been in danger from a pack of cheetahs and tigers!" doesn't really cut it. What about all those times dragons have been threatened by falling Thread? Telekenesis would certainly have been handy to move Thread out of the way. What pack of wild cats is crazy enough to attack something the size of an airliner, anyhow? On one page wild cats are scared off by the smell of 'dragon dung'. On the next they're trying to attack something 50 times their size that surely must smell like a dragon. 5- MISSED CHANCES WITH FEMALE GREENRIDERS When Mirrim Impressed green Path, she was the first of her kind. This book is the first to have a female greenrider as a main character, but it doesn't take advantage of her unique status. I would really have liked to have read a story about Tai. In fact, I could even have ignored the weird sudden discovery of her dragon's new talent had the book actually showed us how Tai was uniquely suited to discovering it. But no. Tai is pretty much a secondary character and mostly ignored until the latter parts of the book. 6- DON'T WINGLEADERS HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES? F'lessan is a Wingleader but not once do we see him leading his Wing. He spends most of his time half a planet away from Bendan Weyr and never seems to take time to have to deal with his Wing aside from Threadfall. If a Wingleader has this much spare time, why is it again that dragonriders don't have time to raise their own crops or take up crafts and need tithes? OVERALL: DISAPPOINTING There were a few points where I did enjoy this book, but my enjoyment was drowned out by the many, many points of the story that lacked cohesion, charm or logic. In addition, the pace was uneven and at some points I found the writing clumsy. I am sorry to see a unique and beautiful world such as Pern portrayed as poorly as this books portrays it.
Rating: Summary: A good read but i expected more from Anne Mccaffrey Review: I started 'THE SKIES OF PERN' thinking it would be as wonderful a tale as Anne McCaffrey's other work. It was a good book though, with old charaters and knew. It began with the escape of Norist's son. Thought deaf from AIVAS's self-protect system, he escaped from a mine in Crom after a meteor hit. Then he traveled to a gather and started yet another annoying abomination group, terrorizing and destorying products of AIVAS. At first i thought the new threat would be like invaders, or possibly some other species trying to take over. I was disappointed at first...but i grew to except it. But after the book was good and done, i had to admit i liked it...
Rating: Summary: McCaffrey leaves her strengths behind Review: Anne McCaffrey is one of my favourite authors; her Pern novels, sitting between science fiction and fantasy, have been a staple of my book diet for many years. I do, however, have to admit that she can occasionally miss, and this is one of them. McCaffrey seems to do best when she sticks to the basics of good literature; a strong central character with action allied to that character that develops them in some way. In the Pern series she has, on occasion, strayed from that strength into tales that just move the history of the planet along. This novel could be the worst of them. Compared to such gems as "The White Dragon", "Moreta: Dragon Lady of Pern" and "Dragonsong" I find myself heartily disappointed. "Skies" has a contrived plot, poor character development and way too much side action to the main plot. The pace is patchy, shoving you along at breakneck speed and then slowing to a crawl in the next chapter. Not one of McCaffrey's Anne, you can do better than this. Even Pern fans could probably miss this one. I'd recommend it only to those who feel compelled to have the complete Pern series.
Rating: Summary: Only long-time fans will need this one Review: For readers who've been following the adventures of the dragonriders for years, an afternoon with F'Lessan and Tai will be well spent. Other readers (or folks, like me, who haven't visited Pern since my teen years) will enjoy the dramatic events of the tale, but will be bored by the constant shift in the point of view. A good many scenes are introduced only as a way to catch up with characters featured in other novels, and some, oddly, are simply recounted after the fact. (Tai, a main character, is set upon by thugs, but the action is "offstage.") The language is often a bit stilted: how about this line? "Those as hears will give a word to the wise to them as is too badly informed to know what's what!" But all in all, a good yarn.
Rating: Summary: Gotta have this Review: Finally! This explains what happens after avis, a little about the original colonists, but mostly it deals with how the colonists deal with technology, the battles they must fight, and the bad guys getting theirs in the end. So don't stop reading it in the beginning because the bad guys and ingrates make you mad, keep reading to see them really gets theirs!
Rating: Summary: My fantasy world continues and I am well pleased Review: Anne has been my "friend & companion" for over 30 years. She has yet to let me down. I wait impatiently every year to loose myself in her imagination. This book continues my fantasy/dream life, while I continue here in reality. Apart from a few slip-ups,it gave me affermation that my lovely dragons and Pern will continue.
