Rating: Summary: I laughed, I cried, I did both at once.... Review: This is the best Vorkosigan book yet from LMB. While _Mirror_Dance_ was excellent, it did not have the same emotional rollercoaster effect as ACC. I'm using the term advisedly -- think of your favorite rollercoaster, and how it feels out of control while guiding you safely around curves, dips, and loops. In the course of Miles' "best damn abject ever seen" apology, I was choking down laughter half a page before tears were pouring from my eyes. Brava, Lois, Brava. :-)
Rating: Summary: For Vorkosigan fans Review: If you're already familiar with the Vorkosigan series, you don't need much more of a review than "It's another winner." If you've yet to read one of the Vorkosigan novels, you'll probably enjoy this book a great deal, but it's not the best of all possible starting points. "Young Miles" - a collection of novellas and short novels would be better and would set up many of the references you'll find here. Better yet, start with "Shards of Honor" and work your way through the whole series.
Rating: Summary: Best LMB book since Mirror Dance Review: In my opinion the series peaked with Mirror Dance, and althoughthe last three books were enjoyable none of them really comparedwith it. Mainly, I thought, because of too little action and a bit too much romance. Therefore I wasn't expecting much more from A Civil Campaign after reading the subtitle (A Comedy of Biology and Manners). It is an understatement to say that my expectations were exceeded. This was one of the best romantic comedies that I have ever read. Chapter 9 (the dinner party) took me over a half hour to read as I was interrupted every minute by another bout of uncontrolled laughter! This is a brilliantly written book. I only have two cautions. The first is that if you got into the series because of the action and adventure, and have found the recent books annoyingly gun free, well, this is probably the worst of the lot. My other caution is that the book throws a number of characters from earlier books (esp. Memory) at you, so you might want to do some rereading while waiting for A Civil Campaign to arrive. I highly recommend this book to fans of the series!
Rating: Summary: Poor Miles Review: This book lacks the mystery and explosions that are such a large part of the previous books in the series. I will miss the Dendarii but am looking forward to Miles' life of wedded bliss... and just how much trouble he can attract just because he is Miles Vorkosigan. 'A Civil Campaign' is typical Lois Bujold - humor, intrigue, intelligence, and with little life lessons peppered throughout. A wonderful addition to the series.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, definately worth waiting for Review: Just picked up the book last night, stayed up until 4AM reading this... loved every minute of it.
Rating: Summary: Delighted me despite my misgivings. Review: After reading the first eight chapters on the Baen website, I was prepared to be mightily disappointed by LMB's newest offering. Instead of the edge-of-your-seat excitement of Komarr or the introspection of Memory, A Civil Campaign starts out sounding like a Gilbert and Sullivan farce. Much to my surprise (and delight), however, once LMB finished making my sides hurt from laughing, she settled down into a delightful adventure and a lovely satire. Who would have thought the Countess still had that old couch sitting around... Readers will appreciate the touches LMB has added to the characters of Gregor and Nikki; they both start actually doing things, instead of being mere reasons for others to act. Mark's role is a bit disappointing, though, and lacking in depth.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: This is Bujold's best Vorkosigan novel to date. There is no comparison. There is NO comparison. Trust me on this; this is better than Komarr, better than Mirror Dance. This book rocks.
Rating: Summary: The best Bujold yet, and that's saying something! Review: LMB has been my favorite author for a decade now, but she just keeps on getting better! ACC is hilarious and heartbreaking by turns, sometimes both on the same page. The new characters are interesting, and the old characters (esp. Ivan and the Koudelkas) are explored in more depth. I especially enjoyed all the references to previous books, but a new reader shouldn't have any trouble keeping up. I can't recommend this book highly enough!
Rating: Summary: If the rest lives up to the preview, superb Review: I've only read the first section (posted on the Baen web site), but if the rest of the book is anywhere near the first ten chapters, it's a masterpiece. And very, very funny!
Rating: Summary: Another excellent read from Ms. Bujold! Review: A CIVIL CAMPAIGN is the latest from Lois McMaster Bujold. This review is based on the first nine chapters posted online by Baen Books. A CIVIL CAMPAIGN essentially continues where KOMARR leaves off. Miles is plotting desperately to woo and marry the woman of his dreams. Complicating life is the return to Barrayar of his clone brother, Mark, with yet another get rich scheme. Set against a background of social upheaval, the numerous plots twist and turn unpredicatably up to this point. I don't know the ending but I'm sure looking forward to finding out!
