Rating: Summary: 'A Comedy of Biology and Manners' indeed! Review: The allusions to previous episodes in the life of Miles make the story richer (as in when the Vicerene drags out a certain old couch), but it has all the hallmarks of a classic, self contained "Miles" story. All of the old gut-wrenching changes in altitude and attitude - and a deft handling of character and life that I am just now (after 10 books and mumble-many years) beginning to appreciate. Miles finds his road to maturity rocky. . . dosen't everyone? But with an assured happy ending, it *still* took me by surprise at the way it all worked out with logic, self-consistency, and characters that ring true. If you don't know what you're missing, think back to the last novel that made your heart ache for the fictional characters as much as it does for real ones in your own life. I cannot stress this enough - READ THESE BOOKS.
Rating: Summary: Yes, this book prooves you can have your cake and eat it too Review: Some readers might have noticed, as I have, that this and the previous book (Komar) are less about Military SF action. I for one applaud the maturing of the characters - not in the least because this year Miles and I are the same age..... I really enjoyed the wit and approach in this book and am really looking forward to maybe a few spinoffs (Please!) focussing on secondary charaters - Ivan's new social conscience has me very curious! I must say though that chapter nine was that most difficult for me to get through - I started to cramp from laughing so hard! Also, thank you to Baen Books for making the first ten chapters available in draft form, I look forward to similar appetizers with future volumes. I recommend any of Ms Bujold's SF and Fantasy, whithout qualification.
Rating: Summary: A perfect book ... Review: When I found this book had been released I rushed out and bought it. It took me a total of 9 hours to read, including stops to eat. I cannot stress enough that this book is now at the top of my all time favourites, beating out David Weber. The only bad point is that my wife has just sat down with it.
Rating: Summary: Bujold does Jane Austen, and it Works Review: If you've ever read the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brien, you'll understand when I say that Civil Campaign is like the second volume of that series. When O'Brien did Jane Austen, it worked. When Bujold does Jane Austen, it's hilarious. Good all 'round.
Rating: Summary: Delightful! Delightful! Delightful! Review: A comedy of manners in the finest style - let's hope Ms. Bujold doesn't give up Science Fiction (and Miles!) for Romance. All of our favorite Barrayaran characters being eminently themselves; the dinner scene alone was worth the price of admission. I'm always astonished at how well Ms. Bujold lets you know where the story is going yet surprises you en route nonetheless. (Speaking of surprises, I hope we see Lord Dono again.) The depth of her universe is breathtaking, and I already can barely wait for the next installment. Bravo and Thank You, Ms. Bujold.
Rating: Summary: All of her books in this series deserve 10 stars Review: First let me say that I have read every book in this series, every one of them has been outstanding. As I was reading this book, and I was only a couple of chapters into it, I figured that Ms.Bojold had finally slipped. It was not anywhere up to her standards. It took me 4 sittings to read the first couple of chapters, BUT all of a sudden I was pulled in, and on the 5th sitting, I read the rest of the book in one night. All I can say is congratulations to Ms. Bujold. Another fantastic story.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: Miles lovers will really get a kick out of this book. It has the cultural insights and a lot of humor! Great addition to the series!
Rating: Summary: A Fun Read-Sure to Please Review: Although the book was a bit slow in setting up the story, the wait was worth it! I have already read it 3 times. I can't wait to see where the story goes next.....as Gregor would say "let's see what happens"
Rating: Summary: Marriage and Butter Bugs, Oh My! Review: Miles has his lady on Barrayar at last, but it requires a covert agent to court her -- it's a good thing Miles had thirteen years in covert ops (or is that oops?). Will he win his lady? Will the Vorkosigans' reputation as galactic-class warriors and statesmen be overshadowed by the infamy of infesting all of Vorbarr Sultana with the most disgusting bug in history? Read it and find out. You won't be disappointed. My word on it.
Rating: Summary: Simply wonderful Review: The best thing about Bujold is that she gets to the bloody point. She follows the golden rule of good science fiction. if you remove all the science you still have good fiction. Miles Vorkosigan is the most delightful literary character i've ever met. i hope he lasts forever. Chris Land
