Rating: Summary: A Rarity - Not an Original Review: Vintage Gibson ? As I was reading the 1st (Signal to Noise) I ordered the 2nd (A Signal Shattered), so I read both over 3 or 4 days. VERY enjoyable! as good as the 1st 3 Gibson novels. I would highly recommend, anyone who likes "cyber-punk) will like these two novels, begs for a 3rd chapter. Rich development of characters, especially Jack, and truly sprawling in diameter.
Rating: Summary: Is a Super Signal of a Book! Review: I bought the sequel (A Signal Shattered) first and read the first page. Then decided, I HAD TO READ THE FIRST BOOK! Mr. Nylund's vision of the future is a fantastic "roller coaster ride" in cyberspace that will leave you breathless. Some of the imagery was hard to conceptualize. But after dusting the cobwebs off of my imaginative processes, I found the book to be a very powerful look into the future. The multi layered plot was tight and captivating. The math was on the money too. Where's my neural implant???
Rating: Summary: The good, the bad and the ugly. Review: Nyland's "Signal to Noise" is at times confusing, at times deep, and at all times absorbing. The "good" are his remarkable ideas that truly provoke off-line (or off-book) pondering: the mysterious enzyme, a trade from the alien Wheeler (and dealer?) and what it's effect might be on different personalities; Jack Potter's forced mental implant and it's effect on his psi capabilities; the "gateway" with the puzzles of its power source and its capabilities. Probably included in this short list is Nylund's visualization of software code when Jack is absorbed in the virtual reality wherein he is a supreme expert at synthesizing new information from a complex of myriad data streams. The "bad" are the confused and confusing relationships between Jack and his 2 friends and business partners, Jack and the ominous NSO governmental spy organization, Jack and the alien Wheeler. Each twist of the tale brings surprising and dangerous changes to what we cautiously took as real. The "ugly" is the final result of Jack's new found ability to communicate. Don't be put off by all this. I relished the characters, all of them including "Uncle" Reno, the super-spy Panda, the gene witch Zero and the entire rest of the cast. They all took their assigned roles and played them to perfection. I highly recommend this intriguing and thought provoking adventure.
Rating: Summary: OK, but the sequel is much better Review: I have never read other books by Nylund. Anyways, maybe it's because I read the sequel A Signal Shattered first, but the sequel is much more interesting. The cutthroat business I did not find that entertaining. However, in the sequel, they use their Gateway and viruses with the implants. However, this book is still great! (After all, you should read the first book before the second book) :)
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Can't wait to read the sequel! Review: I've been a fan of Eric Nylunds since Pawn's Dream, but much like another reviewer below have felt that his last two books were spotty. Good, but only in parts. This book does not suffer from that decription. Incredibly fast and not afraid to make the reader think, this is a fantastic journey through a complex world of ideas. Wildly inventive fantasy. WARNING - Don't read the comments about the sequel until you've read this book. There be big spoilers.
Rating: Summary: This book kicks butt. Review: This book is an sf roller coaster with each drop more dizzying than the last. The pages practically turn themselves. Can't wait to read the sequel.
Rating: Summary: Great Techno-Thriller Review: This was my first Eric Nylund book. I can't wait to read all of his works. This was a very unusual techo-thriller. I highly recommend it; but its not for the techno-iliterate.
Rating: Summary: Waste of time Review: I feel I should, if not be able to get my money back, then I should at least be entitled to my lost time. Mr. Nylund, you owe me several hours of my life. A complete waste of time, and evidence of the sad state of science fiction if bad writing and character development plus some science stuff is STILL supposedly state of the art sci-fi. Phooey.
Rating: Summary: Phenomenal blend of cyberpunk, alien conspiracy, and myth. Review: If you liked Snowcrash, the Amber Series, or even The Matrix, pick this one up. I first stumbled over Eric Nylund with his A Game Of Universe, which got me to read his other two novels (Pawn's Dream & Dry Water). Well, sorta...I got distracted before I could finish both of them. But when he's on, the man's ON. And this one is 10 times better than A Game of Universe. It blends future "reality" and VR with alien conspiracies and cyberspace, mythology and cut-throat business politics. It keeps turning up the heat and twisting the plot, and makes you glad the sequel is already being advertised. This is like the first time I encountered Snowcrash...I have trouble putting the book down. Easily Nylund's best to date.
Rating: Summary: I cant help but love this guys work. Review: Most science fiction and fantasy has become too generic. You almost invariably know where the story is going because there are only so many events that can take place. It's like reading a western and knowing that at some point there is going to be a shoot out. However, Nylud has yet to disapoint me with his creativity and flair. He reminds me of Zelazny with his almost chaotic plot twists from left field. I often tell people that he is probably one of the best new writers of sci-fi and fantasy. I highly recomend Signal to noise. It's his best work to date, and the forrunner of his first sequel.
