Summary: A merely adequate sequel with a cliffhanger ending...
Review: The story takes on a decidedly moral turn as Lyra continues the journey she began in The Golden Compass. The idea of "angels" and "Specters" as well as the tying of "Dust" to dark matter are a bit far-fetched but still fun and original. Some of the magic seems to have been lost in this sequel, but the idea of having a daemon is still charming. My love for the first book redeems my rating for the second.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: All right. For all of you who said you have to be over 12, you are soooooo wrong. I am only 11 and I think that this is the best book I have ever read. I liked both but the second was much more thrilling than the first. I loved the daemons and the endless suspence. I would recommend this book to any book lover. You should definetly read it.

Summary: I'm a kid: I loved this book
Review: Many people might say that this marvelous book is not for children, but I was pulled into it immiediatly after reading it's sister, The Golden Compass. Although the plot sometimes was drained, kids 12-14 would definently enjoy the read. I am 12 years old and it appealed to me at once. the title, story line, summary and all. friends of mine at school have also read it and agreed that it is a spectacular book. But if you don't have any Kleenex handy I'd skip the end. Very sad we all agreed.

While some reviewers didn't give a reason why they gave it a '9', i am. I gave it this because it wasn't quite as good as it's sister. It lacked the thrilling story line, but still excelled in my mind and my friends. I can't wait until the third one comes out. Well, i hope this was a satisfactory review, my first i must say! Have a nice day!

Summary: The Key to a Better Understanding is Written
Review: The Subtle Knife says my book in bold, golden letters. But it is so much more. 'Tis breath taking sequel to The Golden Compuss but so much more. His dark His Dark Materials is the key to all there is to discover. Us on Earth get a whiff of the wonders of the universe! And it is so thrilling so exciting if this isn't high fantasy I don't know what is. And the wonders Lyra and her alethiometer. Windows and bridges to another world. Soul-eating spectors. But Lyra is not alone. Her friends the Witches have come too and only they know her other name, not her but they know, Eve-Mother Eve. And Will, a friend who has come to this world through a window now has possession to the Subtle Knife which can cut anything. This might be the key to end the war in heaven in which the Rebel Angels, otherwise known as dust and dark matter, repeled, a war between them and God that has been going on since the beginning of time. Her mother, Marissa is the enemy, the kidnapper has joined forces with Sir Charels. This thrilling novel is a must read and in undoubtubly the best book ever written!

Summary: RAISING THE STAKES FOR THE FINAL CHAPTER
Review: Philip Pullman has certainly set a task for himself. Whether this a true masterpiece (Lord Of The Rings, Narnia) will depend on how deftly he can interweave the various threads he has laid out for us. Pulling in the story of origonal sin and doing something with it that is neither formulaic or sophmoric is certainly a courageous undertaking as a writer. I hope Mr. Pullman doesn't suffer from writer's block, as I'm really looking forward to seeing how he meets this challenge. And he has certainly set up high expectations with his first two installments. I think the Golden Compass was the stronger book in the wondrous new world and vibrant, endearing characters Pullman created. The Subtle Knife was a lively continuation, perhaps too much weight on action and adventure, but it also threw down the "religous gauntlet" which expands the conceptual content so greatly. Indeed this is dark and wondrous material for gripping reading. My internal daemon awaits with baited breath, anxious to devour the third course of this marvelous literary meal. My one request- bring back Iorek!

Summary: terrific
Review: I read both The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife, and they both exceeded my expectations. If you havn't read either of them, you should.

Summary: Pullman's Trilogy is superb: for mature readers
Review: As a middle school reading specialist, I devoured both The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife. I couldn't wait to recommend it to students... but only those whose minds were mature enough to grasp the themes and handle some of the religious overtones Pullman uses. We have purchased two copies for our school library... neither one lasted a day before being checked out. Mr. Pullman appeared at a local bookstore, packed with an audience evenly divided between young adolescents and adults. He graciously gave the children careful attention and patiently answered their doting questions. This man understands his audiences! We can expect the final volume (which, he assured us, begins with King Iorick) to tantalize and satisfy his readers as well as the first two did. I can't wait!

Summary: OKAY
Review: THE SUBTLE KNIFE IS A GREAT BOOK, BUT THE GOLDEN COMPASS IS BETTER. I DON'T LIKE THE DOUBTS HE PLACED IN RELIGION. THAT MIGHT TURN OFF A LOT OF READERS. BUT OVERALL, I LIKED IT.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Takes You Into A Different World
Review: The Subtle Knife creates a world,(or worlds) that, when you think about everything that's going on in the book from a person in that world's point of veiw, really make sense. I can picture every scene clearly and even feel like I'm looking at people in their backround of colors and not lettemrs on a page, I highly recomend this book to anyone, if you deon't usually like this kind of book you will be surprised when you read it!
