Summary: Fell Flat
Review: I thought that _The Subtle Knife_ fell flat as a sequel to the impressive _The Golden Compass_. Generally, the first book was richer in imagination, and the characters more varied and fuller. I was especially disappointed in how the character Lyra worked in this book, subservient to Will and without a trace of the independence, resourcefulness, and bravado that won us over in the first book. Will, by contrast, seemed almost two-dimensional, and I never did connect with him. And somehow, the idea of a knife that cuts through anything did not capture my imagination in the same way as the alethiometer, with its arcane symbols and unknown workings. I can only hope that the third and final book will make up for this.

Summary: Amazing!
Review: After I finished the first book in this series(The Golden Compass) I rushed out to get this book. I was surprised at the beginning not to start right where the other book left off, but once I got into it, I couldn't stop! I finished this book faster than any book I have ever read! Bravo to the author and I can't wait for the conclusion!

Summary: It was SO good!!
Review: This was one of the best books I've ever read! I enjoyed all the adventure and surprise in it, even more then the first one. I cannot wait for the third and final book in this series. I enjoyed most every part of this book, the knife that cut through to the other worlds. I also enjoyed The Ear, The Eye and the Arm. This was a very good book and I recommend it. But, make sure you read the first one before you read this one!

Summary: Great BOOK!
Review: This was one of those rare and I mean never found books that are actually worthy of their original(the first book "The Golden Compass") in fact I think it surpassed it in imagination creativity and design.

Summary: These books are increadible.
Review: Never before have I been so wrapped in a fantasy book before. Perhaps it is the author's ability to conjour up events which appeal to the realistic minded and put them in a whole different context of magic and fantasy. Issues relating to todays search for tangible evidence concerning existance, superior beings and other worlds are brought together without ever becomming too weighed down with the heavy side of theology. The mixing of physics with religeon gave the story a unique angle which made for compulsive reading. I am very keen to share comments and views with people on how these books could be adapted to the medium of film. I have some exciting ideas, especially for 'Northern Lights' (or 'The Golden Compass' in the USA). Please contact me.

Summary: super duper fantasy!
Review: I can hardly wait for book three! This was another incredible book, and I had a hard time putting it down for such mundane things as work and sleep.

This book focused a little less on Lyra and more on Will, and some of the other characters. This was a little disappointing, but not much. I'm hoping to see more of her in the next book. The action was a little slower than "Golden Compass", but the story moves smartly along.

The most intriguing (and frustrating) thing about these books, is that I still haven't completely figured out who the bad guys and good guys are. A previous reader mentions that he/she disapproves of Lord Asriel's views against the Church. But I'm personally not sure that Lord Asriel is supposed to be a good guy anyway. And, to come to that, is the Church (in Lyra's world) itself supposed to be good or bad? It's against Dust. Is Dust good or bad? Are all adults bad, and all children good? And who really won the great battle of Eden the first time?

I can hardly wait to find out!

Summary: WOW!
Review: I didn't expect this to be very good at the beginning (That's what I thought about The Golden Compass too.) But then it just kept throwing all this suspense in and I could not stop reading it!! It was wonderful how the author did not leave Lee Scoresby and Serefina Pekkala out of this book. It make the book fascinating, especially by tying in Dr. Grumman. I was a little disappointed with the ending. It seemed too "shocking". I still loved it anyway!!

Summary: It's a little hard to get into, but when you do, it's great!
Review: I thought this was a wonderful sequel to the 'Golden Compass' (which, by the way, I loved! Have you read it yet?) I had to try twice to get into it, though, something that disappointed me. What you need to get into it is a long car ride. When I did get into it, I found that I could not put it down. This book really made me think about 'dust' and the church and whether the world could start over again, making it better or worse as it went along. Some characters made me sick, like Sir Betram and Mrs. Coulter, and some surprised me, like Stanislaus Grumman. I think this is a book for more mature readers, as some of it is hard to follow. I do think that this is a must read for boys and girls who can deal with the subject in the right way, not getting scared off by occasional references to the Bible. Have fun!
