Summary: The Subtilities of the Knife
Review: The Subtle Knife is not your average fantasy saga. First, the Hero of the story is a murderer, which isn't new ground. Will comes fom a troubled past, and is out to search for his father. Lyra, the Herione of the first book is also trying to find her father, but I think that she takes more of a backseat character in this story. Pan is in the trunk, he's so out of it. Many other characters are featured, but many faves are left out of the story, and _MY_ fave died. *sob*

Then, there are the odd views of God and the Church. I write myself, if nothing that will ever be published, and these veiws on God,and the "paganistic" themes aren't new. For instance, in the Video Game "Xenogears", an RPG made by SquareSoft (don't be fooled, Xenogears plays out more like a book than a game), God is actually the bad guy is an odd twist of faith. In "Sabriel", Necromacers are at the heart of the story, and the Heroine happenes to be one. (I would reccomend this book to any mature young adult, too.) There's nothing wrong with Pullman's veiw on God. It won't make you burn in hell for reading it, I'm sure. Furthermore, why are all of you so upset? Why are you reading it and complaing about it? you seem to be overlooking the good in this story.

More often than not, this story suprises you. The plot twist are interesting, and the book is more philosophical and such, which I like. Even if it isn't Jordan's "Wheel of Time" (BELA LIVES!), it is a very good fantasy, ranking with his likes. Exciting characters, wonderful plot twist, and an ending so insainly clffy that you can barly hold on to the edge. Enjoy, folks!

Summary: A great read aloud saga
Review: I have 2 boys ages 7 and 10 who would stay up all night listening to this book and The Golden Compass. I'm reviewing it because they insisted that I find out when the next story is coming from Phillp Pullman (if we can wait til September!). In a world of modern stories that lack much depth and character these stories are truly an exception. The characters are fantasy but more real than you would believe. They grapple with real problems and have real solutions and make real mistakes. The story sweeps you away -- often the boys would be totally silent as I read, caught up in the emotion of many moments. What a wonderful way to engage my kids in reading! The only problem is that I have rarely found stories as good as these -- a challenge I'll have trouble meeting

Summary: Cool!
Review: The Subtle Knife is a very good book. Not quite up there with Harry Potter, but really good! Couldn't put it down from the first page. A very good book, can't wait til the 3rd one is out in September.

Summary: The Subtle Knife Stabs My Heart-Wonderful
Review: Picture yourself in this position: Mom is going wacko. People, that you do not even know, are coming into your house. They are looking for a little green case. Then you are hiding for your life. Then once it is clear, you start to get out of your hiding place and a guy walks in. You scurry back into your hiding place. This all happened in the sequel of the stunning book The Golden Compass. In this book, Will, a curious, little boy, wants to know more about life. This book is impossible to put down. It is the best sequal ever. It has the ability to become more popular than any of the Harry Potter books. There is no comparing this book to any others. This book sticks out like a sore thumb. I recommend this book to all age groups. This is one book you can judge by the cover.

Summary: The Subtle Knife-Pullman's masterpiece
Review: Philip Pullman never ceases to amaze with majestic and fantastic works like The Subtle Knife. Pullman is a master crafter who can weave characters like silk thread. You join the unlikely heroine,Lyra, as she emerges into another world in her quest to find her father. Along the way,you meet up with young Will Parry, also on a quest to find his long-missing father.Together the must brave the dangers of this new world, where children roam the streets as they please and no adult is safe from the horrible specters. As the pair of intrepid explorers forge forth on their journey, they must find allies and elude a cruel and powerful enemy that will stop at nothing to keep them from reaching their destination... But rumor has it that somewhere in this child's world, where cliff-ghssts prowl the dark cliff cave's, specters haunt deserted cities, and angels wings beat noiselessly against the far-distant sky, an object of extraodinary power and intrigue is hidden...and only those who are worthy may find it... Pullman again has created a fast-paced,action packed, mysterious, intriguing, suspenseful, and majestic tale with a killer cliffhanger ending, making it truly worthy of the cosmic powers it faces.

Summary: The Subtle Knife-What a Book!
Review: The Subtle Knife is a book that is a page turner. It keeps you wanting to read more and more. This book would be great for the people that do not like to read. The company to this book, The Golden Compass, does not have to be read to read this book so, it makes it that much better. The part that many children will love will be the part when Will finally gets that knife. The way he gets it and "fights" for it makes you want to die. The whole book reaches to your heart and makes you feel that you are part of the book. This book is definitely a must read book. For me it is a two thumbs up book, way up!

Summary: One Great Book
Review: I have about 10 pages to go and I can't wait to dive back into it. It was slightly harder to get into than Northern Lights(or The Golden Compass, as you call it), but once you get over the first part, it is intriguing. I don't want to spoil it, but it is great. I can't wait for the next book in His Dark Materials.

Summary: very very cool books
Review: first of all,the golden compass was very near perfect in every way.im putting my review here is becuase i have more to say about this book than the golden compas, which as i said, was very close to perfect

what i like most about this series so far is that the characters are not set before the reader in terms of good and evil, black and white.the sinister miss coutler, with her vicious monkey deamon, who is portrayed as one of the main 'badies' is never purely malicious and who is to say that she didnt just want to find out how her own daughter turned out?it is not obvious if she is purely evil,or just misled.i totally agree what that other guy said about black and white merging ino grey.

about all the stuff about lord asriel opposing and stuff,i hadnt noticed the author supporting him.maybe because i dont analyze every sentence of the book to look for hidden meanings

i think that the subtle knife was not as good as the golden compass, for the reasons listed below. 1.lyra's character was made alot more meek and accepting.the lyra from the golden compass would not have trusted will so readily. 2.as said by some other guy, pantalaimon did not play as big a role as he did in the golden compass.i would think that lyra would talk to the physical embodiement of her soul more than a boy from another world who she hardly knew 3.the golden compass was more of a journey, while the subtle knife was more about how the three worlds interacted.i also think that too many elements were introduced, and to many elements were revealed.

one a final note,i think that philip pullman deserves more credit then j.krowling got for the harry potter books.all the harry potter books really have going for them is the big mystery about the identity of the feature villian, which loses its novelty very fast

p.s im 13
