Summary: ONe word: EXTREMLY GOOD, wait that was two...
Review: Man THE SUBTLE KNIFE is a great book, i rented THE GOLDEN COMPASS from the library finsihed it in a day and bought TSK the same day...I'm a 17 year old reader and i think TSK is one of the best books i have ever read. And i've read alot of books. Comparing His Dark Materials Trilogy to Harry Potter is pointless because His dark materials outclasses it by leaps and bounds, i wish as many children and teenagers who read Harry Potter would read The Subtle knife, maybe then there would be someway to save my generation.By making them think past the end of theier nose. THis goes for the over 20 bunch as well

Summary: I'm not a big fantasy fan, but this series has me hooked.
Review: Pullman continues his saga filled with characters who evoke the reader's sympathy as well as those who fascinate the reader through their evil machinations. The anti-church sub-text makes me wonder where the author is leading us and how he will resolve these issues in the final book of the trilogy.

Summary: Hurry up with the next one Philip!
Review: I am 14 years old and i've read this book and the first one (Northern Lights) and I think that both of them are fantastic! In a way this book is kind of like the Harry Potter books,it's meant for younger readers but a lot pf adults and teenagers like me read them. This one is a story full of fantasy, mystery, murder and practically everything else you can name! It's got an excellent story line,it's the type of book you can't put down and I've been waiting for sooooooo long for the next one,I'm getting very desparate! PLLEEEEEZZE Hurry up with the next one!!!!

Summary: Beautiful Second Part
Review: The Subtle Knife is an amazing sequel to the breathtaking Golden Compass. Philip Pullman's work is and utter work of art. At the end of the Golden Compass, Lyra watches her father, Lord Asriel, make a bridge between the worlds. Lyra Silvertoungue and Pantalaimon decide to venture into this new world. They find a city called Cigatazze that is empty except for the bands of children that roam around. They also find Will, 12 years old and already a murderer. Where are the adults in this ghost town? Bands of soul sucking specters suck adults' souls out. Will is from our own world's Winchester, where he has left his mother (who is half mad) in search of his father who was an explorer and disappeared ten years ago. Lyra and Will go to Will's world everyday in search of the things they want most: Lyra wants to find out the secret of dust. Will wants to know the truth about his father. With new characters like, Will, Dr. Malone, and Jopari, and reunions with old characters like Lyra, Pantalaimon, Mrs. Coulter, and Serafinna Pekkala, it is sure to win your heart before the war in heaven breaks out. Warning: the end is a TOTAL cliff hanger and you may need to wait a couple months before book three comes out.

Summary: His Dark Materials
Review: i liked the book The Golden Compass, and when it first came out i wanted it to have a continuation. I wanted to know what happened to Lyra and Pan...so i guess it was pretty addicting to me. It may have even helped me see what could be possible, and that you should never stop reaching for your dreams. I still don't like Mrs.Coulter though, because she was kinda mean...But any way...so, when the second book came out and i heard it was going to be a triliogy, i couldn't wait for the third...I'M STILL WATING! but i thought that the second book, The Subtle Knife, was just as good or better that the first. I reccomend this book highly to anybody who likes adventure, fantasy, and just about everything wound together...Surf's Up Readers! PS: Philip Pullman is a great author...i thought i should compliment him in this to, because he's the guy who wrote this!

Summary: A new morality?
Review: I have absolutely loved these first two books of the Dark Materials trilogy. I agree with many others here that they are unlike anything I've read before, and in almost inexplicable ways. They are emotionally dark and inviting and intriguing, and bring the reader into a new dimension of fantasy. The books are truly epic in proportion and scope, and, in some sense, even suggest a new morality.

Along with other readers here, I too am surprised that these books are considered to be children's (or at least Young Adult) fiction. I think they might well be quite fascinating for young readers, although they can be quite gruesome at times (I keep wondering how I would have reacted to Will's accident had I read this at a younger age!) They are more than appropriate, however, for adult readers, and it's a shame that so many may overlook them due to their categorization.

It is amusing to me that the moral majority has latched on to Harry Potter as the poster boy for questionable morality and corruption of youth. Obviously, the Potter books have sold more copies than Dark Materials (more copies than just about anything you can possibly name!), and therefore invite a higher degree of scrutiny. However, these books of wizarding and magical mayhem seem like playthings next to Pullman's tales. It actually (happily) amazes me that no one has spoken out against the anti-Church message in Dark Materials. In fact, these books turn any kind of traditional (read: organized) religion upside-down. I am particularly interested to see what kind of theology or anti-theology will be realized in the 3rd and final chapter.

Interestingly enough, while definitions of good and evil may seem confusing or at odds with each other, there is never any doubt of the true goodness of the two young heros and those that try to protect them -- goodness not bound by any particular dogma or religion. Even though we are introduced to Will as a "murderer" (defined more by his own strict super-ego than reality), he is unquestionably a life-giver; and even though Lyra is branded a rebel, wanted by the authorities in more than one world, and deemed a sinner in the eyes of the Church-like Magesterium, she is undeniably a savior.

Summary: The Subtle Knife
Review: I thought the book was really raelly cool. I read the first one and had to have the second one. they both have a diffrent thrilling ending that will keep you from wanting to finish the book. I wanted to read on an on for ever just to see what would happen next. I am so excited that the third one is comming out. I can't wait to read the final chapter of The Golden Compass. I think Phillip Pullman is an excelant writer.

THE REVIEW SAYS I'M 12 BUT I'M REALY 14.

Summary: MY FAVORITE FANTASY OF THE PAST FEW YEARS
Review: Pullman has crammed more original ideas into this trilogy than many authors have in their entire writing career. The guy actually invents a new sin and makes us feel repugnance for it!

I don't know why so many people are referring to this as a kid's book. I suppose it's because Pullman's previous books were written in a young adult category, and the two main characters are pre-adolescent. Considering that part of the plot set-up is the transformation of the personal daemon as a person ages, I'm guessing that some big surprises will be in store for us in part 3 as Lyra ages.

Perhaps this "coming-of-age" aspect of the story is why it is thought of as a non-adult book.

But I'm in my 40's, definitely not coming-of-age, and this is the best fantasy I've read in the past few years.

Summary: Lyra returns! And finds a companion
Review: The last time we saw Lyra Silvertongue she had stepped into another world after seeing Lord Asriel murder her old friend. She left everything she knew behind and traveled into the unknown. But when she meets Will, who doesn't belong in this new world either. He belongs in a world where people are different, and no one has a daemon.

"Who is He?" She asks her golden compass.

"He is a murderer."

The two travel into Will's world, a place where Lyra can find out more about Dust, and where Will can find out more about his father. The Subtle knife is an amazing sequel. It's almost as good as the original book itself. Our favorite characters return and set up for a battle between good and evil. But which side is good? Which is evil? If you liked the Golden Compass you'll be sure to add this one to your collection.
