Summary: The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman
Review: It is a wonder that an author such as Philip Pullman can write with such a contrast from his thrillers such as "The Ruby in the Smoke". "The Subtle Knife" is the second novel in the "His Dark Materials Trilogy" and is written with a high, unrelenting style that was also present in the first book of the series, "The Golden Compass". "The Golden Compass" went on to be the winner of the Carnegie Medal and of the Guardian Children's Fiction Award. "The Subtle Knife" is no doubt just as good if not better than the first work of Pullman in this series.

"The Subtle Knife" follows again the story of Lyra Silvertongue throughout her adventures as she meets new people, makes new friends and comes across some old foes.

Philip Pullman has made a remarkable discovery in this series and has made me a captivated reader of all his works. He never ceases to make you feel as if you are neck-deep in the plot along with the characters.

I (and no doubt many others) will be awaiting to read the third and final novel of this remarkable series.

Summary: The Subtle Knife
Review: This is the best book. It takes you to other worlds. Once you start this book you can't put it down. I just read "The Golden Compass" and i thought that Phillip Pullman couldn't do better. Than i read The Subtle Knife and I was amazed. It's about Lyra and her friend Will. They go on a big jouney and Will becomes the bearer of The Subtle Knife. Lyra is helped by a witch that flies. Lyra carries around an athlenometer. It is a compass that gives the answers to your questions. Will and Lyra go on a search for Will's father. This is an amazing book! I encourage everyone to read it.

Summary: Truly a masterwork!
Review: If you even so much as considered buying this book, let me put your questioning mind to rest by saying that if you did NOT buy this book, then you have no taste and should be fed to sharks. I, unlike most reviewers (darn you!) will not give away the story. All I shall say is that this should go down as one of the finest tales in literary history! The Subtle Knife far surpasses and standards set by other fantasy novels, even The Lord of the Rings, and the Harry Potter series don't hold a candle to the world that this story (along with the others in the His Dark Materials trilogy) creates in your mind. The characters seem so real and understandable, you almost can smell them. A MUST HAVE (unless you like being eaten by sharks that is)!

Summary: One of the greatest books
Review: The Subtle Knife is a wonderful book. And you cannot let your religion stop you from reading it. Anyone who says it is going to far is wrong. Its aboutWill from our world, who meets Lyra in the world of Citaggaz'e. And a weapon that can destroy everything-or release it. The knife has intentions of it's own, you will learn. Lyra and Will go through worlds, while trying to dodge Mrs. Coulter and Sir Charles. In Citaggaz'e they find specters that have slowly been killing everything, but not with death. They also find troops of Angels and become friends with Balthamos and Baruch. It is a great book and a pleasure to read.

Summary: Someone Like Me
Review: Philip Pullman wrote yet again another fascinating book. The first book of the trilogy, "The Golden Compass," was explained so well in the second book that you didn't even have to understand it or even read it. After the cliffhanger that the first book leaves you, Pullman does a great job of picking right up from that point. In the second book, "The Subtle Knife," the interesting thing is that now she has someone just like her who is lost too, Will. His dad was a great explorer, but one day he left and never returned. Lyra lost all of her friends when she transferred worlds so she is also alone. They meet in a little shop right after Will walks through a "bubble of liquid" in the air. At first, they are both scared of each other, but when Lyra drinks soda for the first time and has a look of awe on her face, Will realizes she is harmless. Lyra, on the other hand, finds out that Will is a murderer from her Alethiometer and is very happy she is traveling with someone who can protect her. They tell each other their stories and decide to move on to make sure they don't get caught. If Will is found, they will separate him from his emotionally unstable mom. Will is only twelve years old, but he knows how to make himself invisible and wants to possess the Subtle knife, which will allow him to cut a doorway into any world he wishes and it will provide him protection. Lyra will be taken to Mrs. Coulter, where she will be in big trouble and most likely serve a harsh punishment for betraying her. As soon as they leave, they quickly find out that they are in a world where the children rule and the adults are running away scared. Children roam the streets with no supervision, care, or love from their parents. Later on, they meet a man by the name of Stanislaus Grumman who is in search for a weapon that will aid Lord Asriel in his research. Specters, creatures who eat the wills of people, and Mrs. Coulter make this adventure and mission of their success quite difficult because they try and take them away by tricking them and by grabbing them too. Towards the ending of the book, Will meets someone that will change his life forever. This shockingly surprising ending is another cliffhanger that will be the start of another wonderfully written book by Phillip Pullman, The Amber Spyglass.

Summary: The Most AMAZING Sequel I've Ever Read!!!!!
Review: At first I was given the book "The Golden Compass" as a gift from some friends we were visiting. I started reading it on the plane ride home and couldn't put it down. But, this sequel("The Subtle Knife") was even better. The "Subtle Knife" doesn't start off where "The Golden Compass" ends but, begins in a whole different world with a new character. At first I almost put it down from frustration(I wanted to know what happened to Lyra) but after I got passed the beginning I was easily hooked. I encourage anyone that read "The Golden Compass" to read this sequel. And to anyone who hasn't read it buy it today and get hooked on the His Dark Materials trilogy!!!!

Summary: Leaves you hungry for more!
Review: This is more than just a casual read. If you've picked up "The Golden Compass" out of curiosity, and are wondering whether or not to continue the series, by all means, drop everything you're doing and buy this book now.

I had been a bit unhappy with Pullman's treatment of Lyra and Roger at the end of the first book, and only picked up this particular book to see if he had "taken care" of things within the first two or three chapters to any satisfaction. Pompous, yes, but when you become as intimate with the characters as Pullman demands of his readers, you feel you are owed something. Pullman pays off big in this novel.

By the end of the second page, you are gripped in the world of another youngster in another dimension of Lyra's Oxford, Will. Will is on the run, striving to protect his mother and himself after a series of misadventures that, by all appearances, seem to revolve around his missing father. The parallels between Will's and Lyra's world do not stop with the geography - their lives are as intertwined as any can be, and by the middle of the book, you are on a roller coaster ride that will not end with the book. If nothing else, Pullman is a master at grabbing your neck and pulling you into the car with him.

Pick up this book, and go ahead and pick up the third in the series as well ("The Amber Spyglass"). You will not want to wait even a minute between reading the two books. An amazing read!
