Rating: Summary: Not too good... Review: This book was interesting in the beginning. I was actually into it for the first few chapters. Then, a little later into it, the book sort of lost its appeal for me. I couldn't even finish it. I thought it would be good, but, in my opinion, it was a waste of money and time.
Rating: Summary: Young adult book and up Review: I'm 14 and i found this book very appropriate for my age. It may be a little advanced for some younger children but i'm sure they could manage. It's very hooking and descibes a place where we'd all like to head to to get away from problems maybe similar to Candy's. It takes the creative mind and put it into words and colorful pictures. Barker did a great job on streaching out the story, but not losing the colorful flare or making it boring. I antisipate the next book and hope there are many more stories and series to come.
Rating: Summary: Come on, You Have To Love it! Review: I saw this book in a Disney magazine and i loved the cover. So when i went to the mall, i bought it. I read it, and loved it. This is the book that made me read 24 7. Now i read all the time. You really need to pick this book up. I have already passed it around to my best friend Kaitlin, My fav. aunt Bonnie, and my school librarian. It is great. Here is a summary: Candy longs to get away, from her boring hometown, ChickeTown. Who knew her wish would come true after meeting the Mischief Brothers, eight brothers connected on the same body. She has now entered the Abarat, a world where there is an island for every hour of the day. For more information read the book. Clive Barker's colorful illustrations make the book even better, because it is sometimes hard to imagine every character he throws at you. Some people think it is too off the wall, but it needs to be, every book can't be the same. It is so much fun. I want the second one, is Clive almost done?
Rating: Summary: a fantasy book coming from the scaremeister, Clive Barker Review: ...this is an overall good book. The illustrations are awsome, and this is a fantasy book coming from the scaremeister. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.:)
Rating: Summary: Most honest review you'll ever read Review: This book feels like an extremely long introduction, but to what? The story never begins and there is no real ending. Big disappointment and very annoying since I read the whole thing.
Rating: Summary: Quiddity for Kids Review: If you haven't read this book and Barker's epic The Great and Secret Show, skip this review. For those of you that have, have you noticed that this novel bears a striking resemblance to TGSS? Think about it: both novels center on an island chain in a mystical sea, the battle between Good and Evil reigns supreme, and the characters are very close: Candy and Tesla, Carrion and Jaffe, the Johns and Fletcher, Wolfswinkel and Kissoon, Malingo and Raul, and the Requiax and the Iad Uroboros. There's more, but those are the biggest similarities. Just something to think about.
Rating: Summary: An Awesome Book Review: I like to read long books so I picked up this book because it looked long. I read this book near Christmas time. In this book, a girl named Candy goes to a magical world. She meets creatures and makes some friends. I enjoyed this book because it was long, and had a lot of strange things. There were a lot of characters. I would recommened this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: Competition for Harry Potter Review: This was an amazing book! It takes you into a whole new world and lets your mind just wander. An interesting thing about the book is that, in the Abarat, there are 25 islands for every hour of the day. The 25th hour is the island of dreams. I loved the characters in the book. There was some strange creatures in it, which added to the excitement. If you like Harry Potter, or you are just into fantasy books, this is for you!
Rating: Summary: AWEsome with a capital AWE! Review: Wow! This book is amazing! Anyone will love this book and its beautiful illustrations! I personally like to read and I love art, and this book was perfect, though you dont need to know anything about art to enjoy the pictures! Of course, with the splendid story line and imaginative characters, this book doesn't need the paintings to make it a top notch book! Grrrrreat!
Rating: Summary: A Warm-Welcomed Surprise! Review: Approaching this book, it seemed just another nameless story in the recent trend for the quest to be the next "Harry Potter" or C.S. Lewis. A different approach to Barkers usually dark disturbing literature, certainly there are undertones here and there... particularly with the intricate design of Abarat. But all together Barker has weaved himself a creative original story that really catches one attention and refuses to let go until the story is done! The story follows the exploits of a likeable well designed protagonist named Candy Quakenbush. Living in Mid-Western town U.S.A, Candy sees little hope for the future particulary when it concerns her family. However when a whim causes her to run out of school in the middle of the day, she litterally finds herself running straight into a whole other world she'd never dreamed of. Yet, she also finds herself feeling strangely at home in this strange other world living right next to our own called Abarat. Candy herself is a likeable protagonist without being overly perfect or underly annoying. Fitting just the right spectrum Candy allows us to both like her without being annoyed by her in a wonderful combination. Though the plot sometimes takes a predictable turn, particularly when it concerns certain aspects of the pre-history of Abarat and the fate of a mentioned in name only character. Barker manages to not make this a focusing point of the story that annoyingly makes us obsess over what he's talking about, nor does he mention it once only to make us forget and drop it in our lap later. What Barker has here is a great story, for all ages that both amazes this reader with his own hand painted colorful pictures that illustrate the book. Abarat is not one to be missed.
