Rating: Summary: Started out slow, but it was 5am when i put it away! Review: Honor Harrington RULES! If you like SCIFI, you should read this book, get to know Honor, and you'll be hooked. Each book about Honor forces me to loose sleep. I must finish the book, it's hard when the story is very interesting and David Weber has a diabolitical sense of humor. a MUST READ!
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing Review: A friend recommended this book very highly, so I had high expectations -- and was very disappointed. It's pure space opera, with very little that gives you pause to think. I'm sure it's very PC to have a female at the helm of the ship, but that alone isn't enough of a redeeming factor to make this worth reading. One sentence summary:
A shoot-em-out in space with a female in charge.
Nothing more, nothing less. Don't waste your time if you like SF with any kind of thought-provoking themes.
Rating: Summary: Warning! WARNING! W A R N I N G !!!!!!!!!!!! Review: Warning! This series can be HIGHLY adictive! Not that thefriend who sent me a copy of this book warned me, and not that I would have believed her if she had. "Military science fiction?!?" Out of respect for my friend I tried not to cringe as I began to read. To my surprise and delight I found myself quickly caught up in the lives of genuinely human characters as they puzzled their way through a complex and intriguing plot. The shear detailed immensity of the world David Weber created was staggering. He described the pain and the terror of battle in a way that made it absolutely real for me, and made individuals' accomplishments and sacrifices truly valuable. There were a couple of times when I wanted to kick the author for interupting exciting scenes to fill me in on some historical background, but I kept reading. I HAD TO. And then there was the next book. Even better! I've read the entire series so far and my only serious complaint concerns the numbers of nights that I've spent reading, and rereading, this series when I should have been sleeping.
Rating: Summary: All-around excellent read Review: As with all the Honor Harrington novels it has everything. Honor is a character endearing to all. And, the action literally shoots you into space. Read one, read the whole series!!!!
Rating: Summary: Excellant space opera Review: This is fun. It's space opera-ish in places, but boy do I like Honor. It's wonderful to read a story where the main character isn't just a vehicle for the plot, and has a mind of her own. I empathise far too easily, methinks, with this woman and I'm planning on going out and buying the rest of this series.
In essence, Honor has been given a ship of her own, her first captaincy of a real warship. Sadly, the powers that be have gutted its weapons systems to test a theory of theirs. When she shows that it can work, other PTB decide that she is an embarrassement to them and send her packing to Basilisk station, the armpit assignment of her majesties space navy.
Honor, compentant as any good hero should be, cleans up house and finds that perhaps all is not as simple as the assignment would have it appear.
Excellant book and well worth the read.
Rating: Summary: Great character, great plot. Review: While I would rate Weber and Honor Harrington slightly below Lois McMaster Bujold and her continuing stories of Miles Vorkosigan that still leaves room for most other current SF to fall below the standard set here. (It's interesting that Bujold, a woman, writes about a male protagonist and Weber, a male, has a female hero.) And I haven't read the rest of the Honor series, so I still might have to revise my overall estimation. But, based on this one book, I have to say Weber and Honor deserve more than honorable mention! This is high quality space opera - a female Horatio Hornblower in outer space. I'm hooked. I've already bought the second book and I'm thinking about ordering a couple more so they'll be here by the time I finish the next one. And maybe I'd better stock up on some celery sticks for Nimitz, Honor's adopted tree-cat
Rating: Summary: Top notch! Review: A great science fiction book, with real character development and a intricate yet readable stroy line. This book, the first in the Honor Harrington series kept me turning pages from the start. The book centers around a female captain of a Manticoran starship. Manticore is in the middle of a cold war with Haven, and the confrontations are suspenceful and unpredictable. I expected more of a David Drake shootout story, but found a much richer, satisfying book. The minute I finished, I went to the store and bought the next two in the series. If you enjoyed this book, you will also like the Starfire gaming system from Task Force Games
Rating: Summary: Feed your imagination. Review: Imagine the future where people have taken to the stars. Earth has been lost to these people but they made out alright. Now imagine your the captain of a battleship not of the water but of space. That is what it is like to read this book. It takes your imagination for a ride and leave you hanging for more. Lluckily there are more books to the series. Once you read this one you will be hungry for more. And thanks to the small history in the back you won't get lost with some of the technical terms
Rating: Summary: You'll want to read it straight through Review: This book introduces us to Honor Harrington, officer in Her Majesties Navy. Extremely well written and engaging. After reading this book, I immediately went out and bought the next 4 books in the series and and impatiently waiting for the next one. Well worth reading. Each book tells a complete story (unlike some other authors I could name) and does not rely on having read the others (though it does help understand the development of the character)
Rating: Summary: Like space fiction? BUY THIS BOOK!! Review: Looking for action? Intrigue? Triumph of the underdog?
Then this is the book for you. Gripping space battles,
compelling plot, and realistic characters make this a
page-turner you won't want to put down. Fortunately,
it's only the start of the Honor Harrington series...
