Rating: Summary: A clever, imaginative and gripping read. Review: "I Am Legend" is an engrossing tale that succesfully moves the legend of the vampire into the modern world and the realms of plausibility. The narrative is quite dry, and yet gripping.Rovert Neville is excellently portrayed as a man who has survived a plague, only to see his family, friends and neighbours return from the dead as monsters. Driven to survive without ever truly understanding his own motivations, he establishes a routine of hunting the dead in their inert state by day while barricading himself in his home at night. Eventually, as much to maintain his sanity as out of any curiosity, he starts to research what turned these people into vampires and why he seems to be immune. The plot is plausible, and the novel treatment of an established legend is exceptional. I read this book as part of the excellent "SF Masterworks" series, which has introduced me to several authors I'd never previously heard of - I'll certainly be seeked out more of Richard Matheson's writing.
Rating: Summary: An exploration of vampire myths Review: I liked this book but i listened to it on audio and it isn't very long. I think the story could have become broader and the story could have been longer. Also, i think there are segments of the story that were not totally explored, such as the vampire virus where it came from etc. Overall it was a good classic vampire story especially for the time it was written in , i believe it was copyrighted in 1954.
Rating: Summary: I Am Legend Review: Excellent descriptive writing. Unfortunately, there is more description than plot. "I Am Legend" turns out to be more a novella than novel and the paperback contains several unrelated short stories that immediately follow. Regrettably, there are no notes that indicate this arrangement and one finds oneself wading through the short stories (also heavy on description, lean on plot) before realizing that "I Am Legend" ended many pages back.
Rating: Summary: Genius! Review: Prior to reading I Am Legend, I had never read any other 'vampire' novels. This is the 2nd book in the SF Masterworks series, and once you read it, you know why. The story is reminiscent to John Wyndham's Day Of The Triffids in the fact that it's a 'one man against the world story'. It is based around the daily life of Robert Neville - the last normal human being left on Earth - everyone else being blood hungry vampires, who are all rather keen to get hold Neville and suck him dry. You find yourself greatly empathising with Neville as he goes about his daily routine of venturing out of his heavily fortified house until sunset, to try and dispose of his antagonizers in a slow and grizzly manner. By night he remains sheltered, drinking himself stupid with whisky (the glasses of which always end up rather comically smashed against a wall). The book more than anything, explores the endurance of Neville as he endures the endless daily battering of his house and mind against his innumerable foe. The book flows from beginning to end, and regardless of your usual choice of book, I'm confident that I Am Legend would be enjoyed by all.
Rating: Summary: I Can't Compliment This Enough Review: I picked this book up because I had nothing else to read, and it was within my favorite genre. I had no idea of what it was about. The only thing I knew about it was that it was one of the books that made Stephen King want to write novels. So, either it's good, or it's great. It turns out it's neither. This book captured me for the whole three hours it took for me to read it. I couldn't put it down. It is now my favorite book. The book is about a man's dealings with vampires. For some reason, and I don't know why, even though vampires have been over-written in the past couple of decades, the story in "I Am Legend" is engrossing. If you like the genre, do not miss this book. This is a must read.
Rating: Summary: Great writing from a great writer Review: Matheson had written many great novels, but this has got to be one of his finest. True, I do wish that it was longer, he tells a complete, complex story with twist and turns like few out there. His attempt to blame vampirism on a virus was near brilliant, the story entertaining overall. By turning the tables, he shows what it is like from the other side of the mirror. I would recomend this book to anyone who has ever read Ann Rice and wants something better.
Rating: Summary: I Am Legend...a pretty good Vampire book. Review: Just "pretty good"...that's the best I can say. At 170 pages, you hardly get into it and it's over. I enjoyed this book but can't see how so many reviewers are able to call it the best Vampire novel ever. Calling it a novel is a stretch in the first place. It's a short story. And the characters don't compare to Anne Rice's in complexity. To me, when you take away the mystery of the Vampire by labeling it as a bacterial infection, you take away the enjoyment of the whole genre. It's a worthwhile read but far from the best.
Rating: Summary: I AM LEDGEND. COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!! Review: This is the first book I have ever read by Richard Matheson, I am impressed! From the very first chapter of this book I found myself feeling what the main character felt and wanting what the main character wanted. The book will keep you enthralled until the end, Oh, and what an ending!! If you like vampire stories you will love this! I highly recommend!!
Rating: Summary: The finest vampire novel ever written. Review: In the same way Philip K. Dick is the unparalleled giant of science fiction ideas, Richard Matheson is the unparalleled giant of terrifying storytelling. Everything from his short stories to his novels is well-written, tightly plotted, and a humbling goldmine of great ideas brought to full fruition. I saw "Omega Man" when I was about ten and the premise really scared me silly. Later in life, I stumbled upon the incredible "I Am Legend" adaptation by Steve Niles (Elman Brown illustrator). Stunned at the story and thoroughly haunted by the artwork, I sought the original novel by Matheson and found it at my college library. I'm a Stephen King fan and thought "Salem's Lot" was the best vampire novel ever written. After reading "I Am Legend", there was no longer any doubt as to Matheson's supremacy. The heartbreaking loneliness, the terrifying nights of survival, the gruesome daytime routines the protagonist has adopted, all contribute to a multilayered novel that has become a standard by which other writers must be measured. The fact that really makes me shake my head in amazement is that Matheson's writing is *always* this effective. A really smart, no-risk purchase or acquisition for anyone.
Rating: Summary: A great read!! Review: I don't normally like short stories but this book is full of great short stories! Each one has a wonderfully horrible twist'ed' ending. I found myself unable to put the book down. The novel "I am Legend" was outstanding. You really got into Robert Neville's world and I found myself wondering what I would do in his position. This is a must read!
