I found it on the shelf and started to read. I was astonished that a book on the shelf dealt with the subject of homosexuality without killing off all the gay characters as evil beings or misguided fools.
Vanyel is presented as a young man who happens to be gay, but doesn't know where to turn to ask questions or gather comfort except for his sister. When she is packed off to become a soldier, Vanyel is left alone and at the mercy of all those who consider him something less of a man.
In order to make a man of him, he is shipped off to court by his father to live with his aunt, who happens to be one of the most powerful mages in the land. Little does his father know that her prize pupil is also inclined to take male lovers.
Vanyel is astonished that someone else feels as he does and this story tells all that follows.
Mercedes Lackey does an excellent job of describing the growth, failures, suffering and triumph of someone who is gay coming of age. This book let me know that perhaps I wasn't all alone in the world and there really were others out there who had the same feelings as I did and who went through a lot to just be themselves and find love.

Wanted to condem Vanyl's relationship with Tylendel. But I just couldn't do it. There was such passion in the writing, it brought me in.
The book, however, could have ended about 100 pages before it did. The end seemed to drag on and on, and I found myself waiting to be over with it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: One of the best books I have ever read Review: This was the first Mercedes Lackey book I ever read and It hooked me for life. Magic's Pawn is so tragic yet uplifting. I seldom read books over yet 15 minutes after I finished it I read it over again straight though. I always loan my books out but I have never wanted to loan any of the Last Herald Mage triolgy out. I've read them all over and over but Magic's Pawn is by far the best. It makes you laugh, cry, smile and experience all of the human emotions. I have never read a book that has draw me into it so completely. Every time I finish this book I have to remind myself that it was just a book and its not real. I half way expect the characters to walk into my room at any time. Mercedes Lackey really made Tylendel and Vanyel's stuggle come to life. It was so realistic. You finish reading it beleiving that that really happened or will happen. Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, and Magic's Price are the best books I have ever read
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A must read Review: This book has it all. Adventure, action, love, angst, magic, wonder, and entertainment. Of all of Mercedes Lackey's books this is my favorite because of the flowing style in which the story is told and the realistic characters. Even if you are not particularily fond of fantasy this book is a must read
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Lackey's VERY best! Review: I have written before, but because of some freak accident I wrote my E-mail address wrong, so here goes. Magic's Pawn is my most favorite book. I can't even begin to discribe how beautifully written, and wonderful this book really is! It has taught me alot about life and that you get what you work for. Vanyel and Tylendel touched my heart like no other characters from any other book have. At the end of this book I probably used up a whole box of tissues, there was none left! It was so touching and uplifting that I thought I was going to break down on the couch in front of my parents, how embarrasing. crying in front of your parents over a book. It's very seldom that you get a book that is so good that you want to read it over and over and over agian! This book is a must for anyone that want's a good read....or a good cry

Review: I have written before, but because of some freak accident I wrote my E-mail address wrong, so here goes. I bought this book because my friend got me hooked on Mercedes Lackey when I first read "The Black Gryphon". I loved it. Then, when I was in a bookstore in Vancouver I found this one (actually the whole trilogy) I bought it, regardless of the cover and read it. I swear after three hours of straight reading, I must have used up the whole tissue box because the book was both horribly sad and very uplifting. It tought me alot about life and that you get what you work for. Vanyel and Tylendel really touched my heart! I really can't begin to describe how very touching this book is, and how very well Mercedes Lackey wrote it! I highly reccomend this book to any fantasy lover or someone who just needs a good cry. It will open your eyes to the world, and that anything is possible if only you try
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Lackey's best work. Need I say more? Review: When I first bought this book, the cover didn't do much for me as other book covers have. But you know the old saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover" so I didn't, I read it and at the end I needed a box of tissues. This book is definately Lackey's best work ( actually the whole trilogy is)
Vanyel and Tylandel really touched my heart, I was so surprised at how I couldn't pull myself away from the book, I read the book non-stop all the way through. I highly recommend this book, and for those of you have read this book know that when you read it, have a box of tissues, you'll need it
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A book to ponder, laugh and, cry with describes Magic's Pawn Review: As I read this book, I started crying along with it but the book is very uplifting. As I finished the book I felt a great passion to siphon some of the grief and joy Magic's Pawn gave me into people's minds and hearts, to give people the vision I had of Vanyel, Tylendel, Savil, all of those dear people who dwell in my imagination. Read Magic's Price and wrap yourself in the book like a warm blanket to keep off the chill of boredom and despair
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: #1 on the top ten list!! Review: This book has it all; action, adventure, magic, love, and loss. Mercedes Lackey brings it all together in this well written and well characterized book, and she does it with a moral lesson that comes stright from the heart. With this book, Mercedes Lackey captured my intrigue and imagination, and I have devoured every one of her books since. If you have not read this author before, this is a great place to start. You will soon find yourself addicted
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Read for the characters and romance, if you like. Review: This book (and trilogy) is one of Mercedes Lackey's stronger works. She handles the troubled Vanyel with sympathy; despite his emotional problems, the tale includes a good deal of humor.
Of course, it's not perfect. The intelligent/ empathic/telepathic companion (Companion?) idea has been used too often, and the magic is not particularly original. Lackey also tends to overemphasize emotional conflicts--yes, we know he's depressed, gay, and suicidal, but could the story please go on? Though some sentimentality is preferable to cardboard characters, an overdose isn't exactly the solution, either.
One of Mercedes Lackey's greatest weaknesses is in the development of her villains, and it shows here. They might as well be cardboard; this can also be seen in her other works where evil is because it is, and forget anything else. As such, the evil-for-evil's-sake is puzzlingly opposed to her shades-of-grey portrayal of the "good guys."
Read it for the tears, for the entertainment-- she's very good at wowing her fans--but don't expect too much in the way of plot logic.
