Rating: Summary: An big surprise ahead... Review: I believe that this story is one of her best achievements as of yet. The story has it all-- love, drama, action, and I personally couldn't put it down. A must for any M.L. fan.
Rating: Summary: Humanity Review: This book is absolutely the most important fantasy book I have ever read. It is not simply about homosexuality, or the tremendous emotional burdens of family duty, honor, or pride. Magic's Pawn's transcends sexuality and reaches humanity. McCaffery probes a wide array of emotional scope. I have given this book to half a dozen people (ranging in age from 22-50), straight and gay; all have been moved to tears. This book may not be celebrated for literary style, but certainly for gut-wrenching pyschological power.A must read for anyone.
Rating: Summary: A must have for Science Fiction/Fantasy readers!!! Review: I love this book!!! Magic's Pawn is definetly one of the best books Mercedes Lackey has ever written!! Unlike most other science fiction books I have read, it doesn't go as first this happened, then this happened then he beats the bad guy. Those are worthless and no one should read it. But, Misty's books are more intimate and dealing with emotions. That is definetly the hardest to do, especially with such a highly controversial topic such as homosexuality. It is not just a tragic love story, it deals with someone who loved, then lost (hit rock bottom also), and then overcomed that loss and lived on. This is a kind of book that I would read over and over. Fantastic book!
Rating: Summary: Great Book!!! Review: Hello everyone! I thought this was a wonderful book. It is really touching and well written. I thought it was wonderful that M.L. could write abt a homosexual and still get her work published. (with all of this silly fighting over it).
Rating: Summary: It is a beautiful story everyone should read. Review: I felt that this book reached in depth to the hardships of a youth who feels out of place and alone in his world. It also examined the fear and confusion of a youth being homosexual. This book is definately one that should be read by any one who has lost someone they loved deeply and gained something by doing it.
Rating: Summary: This book is a toching story of happiness and loss. Review: This is my all-time favorite book. I love this book (and entire series) because it talks about a shay'a'chern man as if it were an every day thing. Mercedes Lackey's books are the only science fiction books where I have read about any characters being . I respect and applaud Lackey's insight and bravery for writing about such a highly controversial subject. I, being shaych myself, absolutely loved this book and the way it portrayed so realisticly the conflicting emotions of a young man finding his ual identity. Once again, this is my favorite book and recomend it to all who are open of mind and ready to fall in love with a book.
Rating: Summary: This book is the best book I've ever read. Review: Mercedes Lackey is a wonderful author, and I think this is the best book she's written. I love the way she draws you into the book, and makes you feel what Vanyel feels. I must admit that I cried when Vanyel's lifebonded Tylendel died; that's how good a writer she is. If you haven't read this book yet, you must read it!!!
Rating: Summary: I threw it away. I'd rather buy something well written. Review: The basic plot is decent enough. But my god, the execution is absolutely hideous. The prose itself is rather poor. I apologize. I cannot back this up with a quote from the book, because I really did throw it away. Take my word that it's not well written, and that I don't simply throw away books for fun. A far worse sin than poor writing, the plot was not well executed. The biggest issue is character development; each character has such exaggerated personality traits as to make them one dimensional. They're simply big, walking stereotypes. And that's really a shame. Quality is at the level I'd expect from a bad, trashy romance novel. Of course, quite a few people LIKE bad, trashy romance novels. If that's your kind of thing, have fun. Myself, I couldn't stand it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful within its range. Review: Maybe I'm overly sentimental, but I just love good emotional stories. Sure, it's a bit sappy sometimes, but if that's not what you want, just don't read it. No cynics allowed. Then again, unless you're so cynical that you're already dead, it's a wonderful read. I borrowed it from a friend, and have now decided to pick up the trilogy for myself. It'll be sitting there representing strength of emotion next to the Wheel of Time for complexity of plot and the Lord of the Rings for absolute hugeness. That's my trinity when it comes to fantasy series; all very different, but perfect for its approach. Now I'll just have to read the rest of the Valdemar series for further appearances of Vanyel and Stefen.
Rating: Summary: The Most Moving tale of Gay Love I have ever read. Review: Vanyel is the essence of what every gay man strives to be. Secure(eventually)in himself and his sexuality. Although he loses his pair-bond so soon after discovering him, he surmounts his loss and moves on. There is a lesson for all of us in his quiet anguish.
