Rating: Summary: Mostly Harmless-Mostly Brilliant Review: If you have read the other four books I strongly advise you to read this one. The whole story is about the new guide. This guide is substansially different this time. It sees everything it is everywhere in every time. Brilliantly imaginative and truly wacky ideas in the book Truly excellent I could not put the book down. You cannot pass a page without a laugh. I recommend anyone to read this book but I also advise you to read the others first to understand the whole story. If you have not read any of the Hitch Hikers Guide Series then I reccomend you to by the Ultimate Hitch Hikers Guide. This book has all five in the series+ a short story.
Rating: Summary: Nearly the best Hitchhiker book ever Review: The final wrap-up of the Hitchhiker series with no one truly finding happiness -- just what we've come to expect from Douglas Adams. Megadodo Publications endures a corporate takeover by Vogons, Arthur nearly finds his calling on a planet that just yearns for a good sandwich, and, hey, Trillian's in it too. It is the most chaotic and attitude-pumped Hitchhiker book to date.
Rating: Summary: Douglas Adams: "He's just this guy, you know?" Review: Sure, _Mostly Harmless_ isn't the same as the original trilogy. And yes it is substancially darker. The ending is abrupt to say the least. But don't take it personally; read it as a conclusion. There are lots of funny bits (like the Elvis sighting: loved it!) to keep things moving along. We asked for another book, we got one. It's not the greatest of Adams' works, but it is an amusing conclusion to a greatly expanded trilogy. I find its darkness and abruptness rather fitting. Certainly worth looking at, for Hitchhiker fans. (How can you NOT read the final installment, no matter how "bad" people say it is?)
Rating: Summary: IF u dont like it, stick your head in a pig Review: Definitely the best Adams book yet, the previous ones seemed to continue on with the same plot, but MH brings in a completely new idea, as well as including the last death of Agrajag, Random is a brilliant addition to the ensemble cast, causing Arthur to actually care about someone else (exception: Fenchurch). The Hitch-Hiker Bird shows that nothing you or anyone else can do will stop the insanity of Megadodo Pub. Great work Adams, a brilliant ending to the Trilogy.
Rating: Summary: It's entertainment Review: Douglas Adams still does a wonderful job of doing what he does best - entertaining the reader with his off-beat but on-time sense of humor. This book didn't let me down in the least, except for finding myself killed-off in the end, and was entertaining from beginning to end. The sub-plots about the "sandwichmaker" and the short but incredibly thought-inspiring chapter about Arthur finding "Earth" in another universe were in line with Adams' style of wit. I liked it.
Rating: Summary: brilliant book for phycisists :P Review: This is a really brilliant ending to the guide series.. ok, it may not have quite the same mass appeal humour of the first couple of books, but what makes this book so great is that Adams takes a lot of scientifically accepted and proven principles and expands their consequences to the ridiculous. ok, so it may require a minimal knowledge of the stranger side of quantum physics to appreciate some of the humour, but for those who have grappled with this bizarre branch of physics at some point, its hilarious. i wholly recommend studying physics for the sole purpose of being able to enjoy this book (well, it doesn't have much else purpose, does it ? :)
Rating: Summary: Shame Shame Review: Ok so this wasn't the best of all the Hitch-hiker books DNA has written but you have to give the guy a break. I wouldn't blame him if he was getting sick of these characters. I know I'm not but I don't have to go through all the trouble of writing them. Shame to all of you that put poor Doug down. "Go stick your head in a pig"
Rating: Summary: FENCHURCH RUINED IT! Review: WELL, I THOUGHT THAT THE SERIES WAS PRETTY GOOD, UNTIL ADAMS INTRODUCED FENCHURCH TO THE STORY. IT SEEMS HE GOT TOO DEEPLY INTO THE CHARACTERIZATIONS, AND LOST THAT SUPERFICIAL TONE NECESSARY FOR HIS QUIRKY SENSE OF HUMOR. NOT THAT YOU SHOULDN'T READ THIS BOOK; I THINK IT IS BETTER THAN THE THIRD, AGREEING WITH THE REST OF THE REVIEWERS THAT THE PART ABOUT THE SANDWICH MAKER IS DEFINITELY A RETURN TO THE OLD, BETTER STYLE. AND I MAINTAIN MY POSITION THAT THE WHOLE SERIES IS FANTASTIC, BUT IT DOES CHANGE STYLE FROM THE FIRST THREE BOOKS TO THE LAST TWO BOOKS, GOING FROM A PLOT BASED STORY TO A MORE CHARACTER BASED STORY.(FUNNY ENOUGH, I DID THINK THAT "THE LONG DARK TEATIME OF THE SOUL" WAS BETTER THAN "DIRK GENTLY'S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY", AND IT CAME AFTER THE LATTER...)
Rating: Summary: Death of the Whale sums up the book, series Review: I have to agree with those who were let down, even shocked, at Douglas Adams almost contrived? ending to the Hitchhiker series. Was he simply getting sick of the inevitable questions Whenyagonnawriteanutherbook?whenyagonna writemoreaboutmarvinfordzaphodetc? I found the introduction of Arthurs daughter Random to be nothing more than a plot device, the glimpse of Elvis a poor joke; while the connection of the Hitchhiker Bird and the Vogons obscure and frustrating, only Arthur Dent had any spirit worth pursuing. I only hope Fenchurch ended up in the arms of Dirk Gently from the other (woefully neglected now) series. I know D.Adams has shifted the focus of his writing from gleeful chaos to Zen-inspired focused chaos, but he changes gears so abruptly here its painful.Mrsmishima
My one-line title refers to the the surprised Sperm Whale in the first book, created by the infinite Improbability Drive during the attack over the desert planet, who is coming to terms with being himself, (herself?) as a whale, before coming to terms over not being a whale-or alive-anymore. D.Adams claimed he recieved so much mail from angry readers over what was at best a 2pg. apperance of a brief but sympathetic creature. Its in effect the same thing as the ending of Yukio Mishimas Sea of Fertility tetralogy, which ends with the aged protagonist wondering if the last 80 years of his life have been but a dream. Tears of the Adams whale indeed
Rating: Summary: A very humerous look into the future as it might become. Review: (For all 5 books in the Hitchikers Guide to The Galaxy trilogy)Douglas Adams does an excellent job of portraying the future through the eyes of an average person living in England who gets involved when the earth is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. The 'hitchiker's' series is very humorous and easily enjoyed by people of all ages. After I bought the first book, I couldn't stop until I had read them all! If you enjoy science fiction but find it too dull and serious, I suggest you try Douglas Adams. He adds a much needed twist to the world of science fiction.
