Rating: Summary: This book has all the components of a literary masterpiece. Review: I have read a large amount of science fiction and fantasy, and have developed a somewhat critical view of modern literature. I believe that this story belongs with such masterpieces as The Martian Chronicles, Star Wars, and Dragonriders of Pern. The authors have created a plotline that snares you and won't let go. Plot twists abound, and the character development is superb. The authors manage to create an atmosphere of tension and despair without a feel of futility. You come to admire the heroes and totally despise the villains. This is no hastily thrown together piece of fantasy mush. This is a modern legend.
Rating: Summary: Splendid Review: A brilliant and unusual ending to a must-read series. Instead of the usual blood-and-gore bashing so many writers (and readers) seem to think appealing, the tension is settled peacefully (mostly) yet without disappointing. A meaningful read. However, it IS a little rushed.
Rating: Summary: A somewhat sad and dissappointing end to a fantastic series Review: After waiting months to read the whole series to have it end like this, I'm dissapointed. This book by itself is great, and I would recomend this book highly, but I thought there should have been a better ending.
Rating: Summary: almost perfect Review: An excellent conlusion to the series, The seventh gate continues to develop an intriguing plot. While I was hooked from the beginning, I would have liked to have had a longer conclusion. The ending is not exactly what you expect, though still good, but you will wish it was what you expected.
Rating: Summary: Beyond expectations Review: As the title says, this series has gone beyond any expectations i had. This is a series where the momentum is built on the way. It's start small and grows until your imagination have to create almost all of the scenes. I was beginning to slowly leave the world of fantasy, mainly because i became bored of the same kind of heroes, all looking alike, quests after quests. Now what about half-gods? An ancient grudge? Ironic torture? And a whole lot of society values that differs between thoses two races? Who's right, who's wrong? Now we talk! No words of mine can express my appreciation of this work. A must read!
Rating: Summary: Good Series but is there a possibility for another book??? Review: Despite what some of the reviewers have said about this book it is all in all a very decent book. Don't get me wrong I am not very happy with the ending. However we must remeber that it does leave an opening for another book or series of books!!! If the two authors don't do anything more with this series then I agree with most everyone else in the fact that it will be a waste of a very good series. I hope that the authors actually read these revciews and see that they have a good series with a lot of potetal still left. This is one thing that would be better left finished than with a half hearted ending. Hopefully you all will still read the series it is noteworthy. And to the Authors even if it's just a short story I think you owe the readers a little more than what you gave us for an ending!!!
Rating: Summary: Ugh. Review: Dont get me wrong - I love all the Weis/Hickman books... but this one wasn't what I expected from my two fave authors. In the other ones, something flowed within that made me want to keep reading. In this one, I almost put it down on various occasions. It was only because I heard it was soo good that I kept reading. And then, Im sorry to say, I was very disappointed.
Rating: Summary: 3 1/2 stars. Why or why must this series end????? Review: Finally, the last novel of the Death Gate Series. This novel picks up right where the last one ended. Xar has now taken a wounded Haplo to Aberrach, and Alfred is now missing. Meanwhile, the serpents have led an attack on the Final Gate in hopes of closing the Labyrinth for all of time. Alfred is later found by Hugh the Hand and Marit. Once he has been found, the trio travel to Aberrach in hopes of saving Haplo from Xar. When the trio gets to Aberrach, things really start tyo get interesting. Xar's main goal in the whole novel is to get Alfred to take him to the Seventh Gate. However, Alfred has no desire to do anything along these lines, even though Xar is leveraging Alfred with Haplo. How and why the characters end up in the Seventh gate is a complex tale that is important to the whole novel. The plot is always in full motion; there isn't a chapter that does not have something going on in it. However, this book does not rate as highly as the other books. The main reason that this is so, is because there is simply not enough to the story. The novel feels like it was written to tie up lose ends and it lacks the quality of the previous books in the series. Overall, the series was phenomenal, but this book leaves the reader depressed, because you simply want MORE. The characters were ingenious, but the ending leaves you hanging. The reason the ending leaves you hanging, is because you have a sense of a new beginning, and no idea what is in store. Weis and Hickman did a tremendous job throughout this series. Surely, if they decided to add to this series the additions would be welcomed and desired. Don't let the last book diminish the over-all excellence of the series.
Rating: Summary: This whole series was amazing Review: Following the ancient war of the Patryn and Sartan throughout the books, among conflicts "of the lesser races" was facinating as well as exploring the various sundered worlds. The main characters, Haplo, Alfred, Hugh all keep you interested throughout the books.
Rating: Summary: Good but not great Review: Haplo and Alfred are battling against forces on all four worlds and the dragon snakes are trying to destroy the Patryns and Sartan by starting a war in the Labyrinth, and then tricking them into fighting each other instead of the real enemy. Apparently there are only 4 intelligent people in the world, everyone else is hell bent on winning a war that can have no winner, and will not listen to anyone who tries to tell them the truth. Alfred and Haplo end up in the seventh gate along with Xar. Alfred tries to shut Deaths Gate so all the dragon snakes, Patryns, and Sartan are trapped in the same place, hoping that in time they will stop fighting. As usual, nothing goes as planned but in the end, there is tentative peace between everyone, which feels a little too neat. Overall, the series is good, but it could have been told in five books instead of seven. The biggest weakness is that you never feel close to the characters, as you do in the best fantasy books, like those by Mercedes Lackey and Lynn Flewelling. You like the characters you're supposed to like, and you hate the characters you're supposed to hate, but you're not too tied up into what will happen to them. If you can ignore the flaws of the story, then it is an enjoyable read.
