Rating: Summary: An adventure keeping you in suspense for more than 1000 page Review: I bought this book while on holiday in France (2 weeks and not a single day without rain). I was kept in suspense all through the book. At first I found it very annoying that throughout the first 6 chapters not only did Hamilton introduce new characters but also kept introducing so far unrelated events - all chapters ending without any final conclusion. This book will ruin your sleep - you just keep turning the pages. Well, got to go know - on my way to my local bookstore to buy part 2 of this marvellous adventure
Rating: Summary: PRETTY GOOD, BUT NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART Review: THIS BOOK IS COMPELLING AND INVOLVED, THERE ARE SOME BLANK AREAS AND YOU HAVE TO FILL IN AS BEST Y OU CAN. THE BLENDING OF RELIGION AND HI TECH IS A GOOD TRY, AND THE MAIN STARS ARE ABLE TO HOLD YOUR INTREST. READ AND WAIT FOR THE NEXT VOL
Rating: Summary: Stunning.... Review: I have only read the first 134 pages and I am stunned. Few authors can capture my imagination these days. This guy did it in the first few pages got me.
I am tempted to take several days off work just to read it in one sitting...it would be worth it.
If the rest of it, and its sequels, are as good as I have read, it will be one of the best I have ever read
Rating: Summary: An above average examination of human nature Review: Although the science in the book is wonderfuly imaginative, if not a bit outlandish, the character development and philosophy is excellently presented. The author has keen insights into the darker realms of human nature and admirably does not try to guess at the underlying motives of alien cultures. The described worlds are beautifully described and the detail is quite vivid. An exciting yet often disturbing book, but that makes for good fiction
Rating: Summary: Excellent read, but caution: contains dark violence Review: Agree with strong reviews of this starkly original and inventive work. For SF this is very much "reality fiction". I would caution perspective readers that there are some dark and pessimistic views of people and motivations. I myself had to keep putting it down as I absorbed and reacted to the realistic violence and inhumanity in this work.
There are also beautiful cultures inside, which have realistic characters who do the best they can while the plot, like real life, forces them to do both idealistic and opportunistic actions.
This is the Ann Rand SF for the 90's.
Rating: Summary: a must read for hard sci-fi fans! Review: This was one of the best hard sci-fi books which
I have read recently. With good character
development, cool high-tech, and lots of action,
there is a lot in these 600 pages. The biggest
problem is that this is obviously the first
installment of a series; the publisher says
the next volume is to be out in July, 1997 --- where is it??
Rating: Summary: One of the best ever... Review: This novel is simply one of the top ten sci-fi novels I have ever read. It has it all - silky-smooth dialogue, mind blowing imagery, multiple subplots, gigantic scale, and sterling character development. If your going to read any sci-fi book this year, read this one
Rating: Summary: Enthralling, but it concludes with too many loose ends. Review: I rated 8 because the book concludes with so many plots and sub-plots in the air that I felt cheated. My paperback was under 600 pages, so am confused as to whether there is some more. The science was enthralling, and the organization designed to keep you engrossed full time. I immediately went looking for the sequel - can't find it. Will probably read again awaiting part 2
Rating: Summary: Superb even when read for the second time! Review: The first book I've read from Peter Hamilton was Quantum Murder. And I am asthonished that he is able to top it with this book.
Making a great Universe with two differnt cultures, two different concepts of living and dealing with problems is just so fun to read that I've read it more than once - You can find little details every time which you looked over in the first time.
I've read the whole 1200 pages and first I thought that it was all, but when the end was so open I've realized that it is just the first novell in a series - I really can't wait to get the next one.
Rating: Summary: Simply Outstanding! You will not be able to put it down! Review: I settled into the large Volume 1 on a transAtlantic flight and was thoroughly immersed in this story 9 hours later. The plot is excellent, the characters well-developed and likeable, and most noteably, the characters exhibit common-sense and do not do things which leave you commenting, "That's ridiculous!"...
