Summary: Another triumph for Colonel Grossman
Review: Dave Grossman's The Two Space War is a five-star winner. Though it is the first science fiction book this voracious reader has ever picked up, I didn't put it down until the end. Grossman's previous books on the art and science of combat are path-breaking, must-reads for any serious student of combat and any true warrior. I teach a course on the psycho-physiology of combat that relies heavily on Grossman's previous works for class readings. Though I use Grossman's On Killing as a text, I'm adding the The Two Space War to the "highly recommended" list for my warrior science students. I'm not a Gen X learner, but everyone loves to learn when learning is fun, and here it is!

The book presents combat principles through the eyes of futuristic/historical warriors' experiences. Immersing one's self in the excitement of a fast-paced plot and "can't wait to turn the page" action reinforces survival science fundamentals that keep the good guys winning the battles. Before this book, I had just finished John Boyd's Mind of War and was considering how best to present the concept of the Observation-Orientation-Decision-Action (OODA) loop in class. There's a great passage in The Two Space War that does just that, and I'll be reading it in class.

I picked up the book because of the author's reputation. I loved the book because of the author's consummate skill in telling the story and teaching the science.

Summary: Truly Original...
Review: Dave's first fiction outing is something with a truly original concept and is overall a damn good read.

True, it is a little patchy in places and I hated the damn monkeys, but throughout you can see this is a work of passion.

As a soldier, I can identify with what is going on here, but one or two of the ideas might be a little difficult for a total civilian to grasp - but then again, in this day and age, which of us is really merely a civilian?

I really liked it and I want to see what comes next.

Summary: Horatio Hornblower meets the future.
Review: Excellent book that puts some reality into the concepts of combat. Combines the concept of the 'Iron Men in Wooden Ships' with reality. Yes, there are Iron Men. However, answering the question about how they became that way is not talked about very much. This book does that. The book starts out fast and keeps going that way. It has all the requirements for an excellent series. The book covers the areas of human combat, training for it, and dealing with the aftermath. All too often, the last part is not covered, and the first part is not realistic. Grossman is an expert on how to train for combat, and most important: how to deal with it after you have 'done what must be done to survive'.

Summary: Military sci-fi with a message
Review: First off, this book is about an idea. That may scare many people away as these books usually are not worth the paper they are printed on. This boook is different however, as the idea advances the story.

Like David Drake, Dave Grossman is a combat vet, and his books deal with redemption as well. This is a story of a world in which FTL is developed, but in a lower dimension, nifty huh? Throughout the book you will find info on pistolcraft and some absolutely great quotes worthy of Pratchett himself.

Anyway, the book is great and you should read it. Read anything from Baen and you'll be happy and this is no exception. Baen will let you read the first 1/3 of the book free. Give it a try.

Summary: Nice Marriage
Review: Found this book to be a nice marriage and blending of known scientific facts & written fiction. Held my interest enough to read through in one day, and plan to read again to pick up on the smaller details that I missed. Have also heard that the author, Grossman, is currently writing a sequel.

Well worth the time.

Summary: Tolkien, Poetry, Pre-Ironclad Naval Spacewar!
Review: I approached this book with mild trepidation, as the description on the outer jacket sounded fairly whacky, but it turned out to be
a total page-turner: about the only thing wrong with it was that it kept me up until 5 am one morning. A book combining Tolkien, poetry, old-time naval warfare, military studies and science fiction is either going to go very wrong or very right, and this one does it right, synthesizing these disparate elements into a quite unique and very enjoyable whole. I eagerly await further voyages in Two-Space.

Summary: A young readers viewpoint
Review: I found the information on current warrior science interestingly mixed with science fiction. The OODA loop and information from Bruce Siddle and Dr. Alexis Artwohl was familiar as I relate it to my father who uses it to teach law enforcement officers now. To see this refered to as "writings of the old masters" was strange because they are current teachings today. The science fiction was mixed with poetry and quotes. The characters were interesting to say the least. I look forward to another book by this pair of authors.

Summary: A new way to train reluctant warriors.
Review: I just finished "The Two Space War". I have to say that it was awesome. It was Heinlen, Jack Aubrey, and Killology all rolled into one great book. This is a groundbreaking new type of learning/teaching tool that could finally get those that don't have the desire to read Killology or go to Lt. Col. Grossman's seminar or other seminars, to learn all of the survival skills that are so important.

I'm eagerly anticipating the next book.

Summary: Terrific
Review: I totally enjoyed this book. I did however skip some of the poetry to get on with the story. The intergration of "Killology" really set this book apart from the pack.
