Rating: Summary: My most recent reading of Pern, but not my last.... Review: I've read most of this series, but I never get tired of this fantastic weave of Science fiction/fantasy. McCaffrey shows her range as she turns a dragon-wary squirt of a child (Jayge) into a respectable holder, who eventually ends up liking dragons.
Rating: Summary: A good book but lacks action. Review: If you like action and adventure DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!!! If you are not into action and adventure but still like the Pern trilogy this will be a good book to read.
Rating: Summary: A mediocre book, poor and weak Review: If you love Pern, if you thrilled at the first riding of Ramath by F'larr's dragon, or the fall of Canth, do NOT read this book. It is pure dreck, proof that McCaffrey has "Heinlein's Disease" (which casues SF writers to really suck with their last few books before they die). Do read ALL THE WEYRS OF PERN, though, it's great, and absolutely requied for any fan of Pern.
Rating: Summary: Get to the point, already Review: Not a bad book, per se, but I for one expected else. It does make an interesting illustration of life outside the Weyrs... but that's what I read the books for! Some very good bits, though. Sets the stage for "All the Weyrs of Pern" very well.
Rating: Summary: A fastinating read. Review: This book gives the reader a different view of Pern than the Weyrs and Halls. It shows how the common, unconnected people live, and their attitude towards, (read fear of) dragons and their riders. The people, for a change, are ordinary people, not the Lords and Ladies of Pern. They are simple people, trying to scratch out a living. The characters are interesting and well-rounded. It is wonderful to see how the disenfranchised try to survive, even under the threat of Threadfall. A must-read for all Anne MacCaffrey lovers.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful book! Review: This book, although confusing in the beginning, is a worthy link between The White Dragon and All The Weyrs. It is almost a summary of the first three books, starting before Dragonflight, and ending just before All The Weyrs. A must read for all Pern fans. All the Weyrs won't make sense without it. A truely wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: Good book, but lacking somehow Review: This is a pretty good book, but I found it one of the weaker Pern books. It spans way too many years (about 27) and tells about things that that are in other books (Fax's death, Piemur's journey around the Southern Continent, and the stealing of Ramoth's queen egg, for instance). This wouldn't be a big problem because it gives these events from other people's perspectives, but there is a bigger problem. In the middle of the book, McCaffrey shifts from talking about Thella, Jayge, and Aramina, and instead talks about the Southern Continent and the discovery of Landing. If they would just stick to the renegades, it would have been a great book. On the plus side, the characters were wonderfully developed and it was nice to see Pern from the perspective of the ordinary people. But I'm afraid this is an example of a great idea being ruined by including too much and spanning too many years.
Rating: Summary: The Other Side of Pern Review: This shows the common side of Pern. It is a change from the Weyrs to show how the commoners first dealt with threadfall. THis book provides insight into a very often overlooked side of Pern. These characters are those who provide the complet experience of Pern. Now it is a complete world, that draws you in further as you read it. THis also shows the commoner's attitude towards the Weyrs and Dragons as shown through Aramina.
Rating: Summary: A MUST!!!! Review: This was a really great book. You really should read it, I'm certain you wil;l enjoy it
Rating: Summary: No! I'm melting! Review: Whatever you do, RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO READ THIS BOOK! It should be removed from the McCaffrey lineup by the publisher, it was so bad. A bunch of crappy characters, some of McCaffrey's most inattentive writing (and some of the latter-day Pern books are LAME, let's admit it), and a bunch of British class-warfare themes that the rest of us don't care about. Skip it.
