Rating: Summary: Choppy but introduces a whole new era for Pern Review: I have been re-reading the Pern series from the beginning and while I agree with other reviews that Renegades is not McCaffrey's best work in the series, it does have the advantage of finally connecting the early and late Pern sagas. The first half of the book is distractingly choppy with snippets introducing about a dozen characters. But about half way through the book comes together as McCaffrey links most of the stories of these individuals. The last third is the most valuable with a serious development of the Southern Continent, and discovery of Landing and Aivas. It sets up a fascinating study of two cultures interacting - one that is very low-tech and another that is incredibly sophisticated. Also enjoyable is a more detailed representation of non-dragonrider life on "current day" Pern. If you can get through the first half set-up, the book is worth reading and sets up All the Weyrs nicely.
Rating: Summary: Renegades of Pern Review: I have ready the all the books in the Pern series and find this one to be the weakest of them all. It was harder than most to follow and the feeling of satisfaction that I normally experience at the end of the book was missing. Somehow it was just not up to Anne McCaffrey's normal standard. It is still a worthwhile read as it explains some of the actions of Dragons, Riders, Harpers, Lord Holders, other Crafters and the "Holdless" which occur in the other novels of the series.
Rating: Summary: It's not just dragonriders on Pern.... Review: I love that there are books in the Pern series that have nothing (or almost nothing) to do with dragons. Yes, the dragons are a fun part of it, but this story of the "little people" of Pern is well-wrought and engaging. I thoroughly enjoy reading it every time I pick it up. This is the story of the people who have no borders-be it by choice or by force. Jayge Lilcamp and his family are traders who travel from hold to Hold selling their wares. Aramina, born with the ability to "hear" dragons, and her family were driven from their hold by Fax because of her mother's Ruathan blood. Thella is the sister of Lord Larad and, angry that he was chosen as Lord Holder over her, runs away to become the Lady Holdless-a riever and thief with no thought save her own comfort and ambitions. These three disimilar characters compose the central plot in this story, each viewing the Holders, Dragonriders, and their companions from uniquely fresh points of view. One of my favorites.

Rating: Summary: Very Good Review: I loved this book. At first it is a little bit confusing, but if you read it over, the plot as a whole gets better, and you will love it! The book is very well written and organized. I think that this book is a must-read. I have not read the other Pern series books, but I have read The Renegades of Pern, and I am now hooked on the whole series. This book is excellent! :^)
Rating: Summary: This book was terrible Review: I normally love Anne McCaffrey's books, but was absolutly discusted with this book. I have read almost every book in the Dragonriders Of Pern series, and this is the only one I didn't like, other than the collections of short stories. If you ask me, though, this book was the worst.
Rating: Summary: Very enjoyable Review: I recently listened to this book on tape, and found it very enjoyable. I actually sat in my car, after I got home, so I could hear the ending. I love Science Fiction and found this book a nice change from the techno babble many other authors inject in their story lines. Now I have to start from the beginning and actually read all her books. I gave it four stars only because I read it out of series, and although I knew this, I felt the story needed to further enlighten a new reader to what was already going on. It's too late now, I'm hopelessly hooked.
Rating: Summary: Renegades of pern Review: I recomend this book if you are reading the entire Pern series in chronological order. Renegades will seem choppy if you read it alone and most of the secnes will not make sense if read before the other books. Renegades fills in a lot of time gaps that reading the others leave out. I recomend this book to all Pern fans.
Rating: Summary: The Renegades of Pern Review: I was somewhat dissapointed by this book. This is the 2nd one in the Pern Series I read, I had just finished all the Wyers of Pern before. I really enjoyed the large role the dragons got to play in Wyers of Pern, this book lacks it. You don't really get to see into the telepathic relationship the riders have with their dragons. It's exciting, but I really miss the dragons. The wyers are put into a bad light early on, and I was confused about the Leadership of Benden Wyer, when did F'lar and Lessa take over? The book is okay, but she's done better.
