Summary: Semper Stupid
Review: (1) If you want a honest, balanced depiction of the Marine Corps go out and buy the non-fiction title The Proud. (2) If you want to read military sci-fi with an emphasis on the man in the field go read Redliners. (3) If you want a real portrayal of politics and warfare, read We Were Soldiers Once...and Young. (4) If you want a sci-fi book that emphasizes the Japanese code of Bushido, read Fire on the Border. (5) If you want to throw away five good dollars on yet another overblown, 'epic' about some make-believe Marine Corps that saves humanity all by their unapprecieted, glorious selves, then by all means buy this book.

Summary: Ohhh-rahhh
Review: After "Saving Private Ryan" and this book, you'll want to reach out and thank every veteran and serving service man and woman.

I just fininshed it today and am still emotionally attached to the marines portrayed. If your patriotisim is a little frayed take a look at these people who go out and put their lives on the line to protect our way of life.

This is truly Science Fiction at its best. Awsome!!

Can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy.

Summary: Very Nice Job! Not just for Space Marine fans
Review: After reading all 3 books of the "Heritage Trilogy" I felt compelled to write a review. I am one of those many readers who go through 'phases' and read tons of different types of books. I read most of the 'Starfist' series, which I found mildly enjoyable (except #2, skip that one). Anyway, I figured these would be quick, action packed, easy reads. I was partially right. There is action, and alot of Space Marine patriotism. Just what I was hoping for. A very pleasant surprise however was Mr. Douglas' excellent plot and character development. Unlike many series, where it appears the author(s) just decided to stick a new story onto the last one without any real regard for continuity, The Heritage Trilogy delivers. I found it to be fresh, interesting, and much more than just a bunch of Marines-fighting-against-impossible-odds cliches. I highly recommend "The Heritage Trilogy" in its entirety. Each book is better then the last.

Summary: Incredible military SCI-FI
Review: Amazing storytelling with a great human backdrop of the saga of the US Marine Corps. This one is a must have for any military sci-fi fan. This may well tell the future of man with a few things different here and there. The future for this series is incredible. Im waiting for book 5 to come out in hardback !

Summary: Hackneyed, pre-Sept 11 Blungeondry
Review: As a long-time Mars fanatic, miltiary buff and sci-fi hound, I've got to say this book is a disappointment. The "science" in the story borrows heavily from a wide range of sources, including (God help us) Graham Hancock. The story itself is little more than an exercise in US parochial jingoism we could well do without, post Sept-11th.

On the whole, the author demonstrates little understanding of the big, wide world beyond the US shoreline, and his thin-veiled "warning" to the UN (and the world at large) to effectively keep out of anything the US considers to be be it "own" affairs (be it on this planet or elsewhere) comes over as hackneyed in the extreme.

Characterization is, to say the least, shallow, the back-story is non-existent, and the US v. the other developed nations stance is incomprehensible in this day and age. I can see why this story appeals to those with a cursory knowledge of the real world beyond the USA, and to those who espouse the view that space battles are "cool" and war can be a "clean" thing for the good guys (no-one in Douglas' forces ever seems to acutally suffer through the indignities and horror of war...or even get wounded). For those who like to be challenged by their science-fiction, or at least like it to be believable, I'd advise bypassing this dross with all haste.

Summary: Characters are great, Plot takes some Creative Lisence
Review: As an active duty Marine, I picked up this book expecting a good sci-fi read with an average to good depiction of the Corps. What I found, though , was that most of the details about the Marines was well researched and well implimented. From the numerous (and relevant) invocations of the history of the corps, to the way the characters acted, I found myself nodding my head as if the Actions of the fictional Marines mirrored those of Marines I know. The only real nit-picks I could come up with was on the uniforms, but then, I'm a stickler for the dress code. Marine Embassy Guards wear Dress "C" or Dress "D" uniforms (no such thing as the designation "Class A's"), and Marine Officers' Rank insignia is shiny silver or gold on the utility uniform (the other 3 services wear matte black insignia). OK, enough ranting from the PFC.

As for the plot. The politics were belivable for the situation. Do I think a lot of it is plausable given the book's telling of it's plot's history: Yes. Do I find it believable in our OWN world: No. Then again, it's science fiction, the laws of reality go flying out the window. End of story.

All in all, if you like the Marines, the good 'ol USA, Mom, Apple Pie, and want to kill a few good hours, read the book.

Summary: Semper Mars - Hooo Rah!
Review: Awesome book. I, like others could not put it down. I am picking up the second book today and was excited to read the reviews that state the second book as good as, if not better than, the first book.

Looking forward to reading the second and third books in this series.

Summary: Exciting, fast paced, leaves you wanting more!
Review: I am an X-Marine officer and I thought the book portrade real life of the Marines of today and the future. The story has mysteries waiting to be uncovered. It was fast paced and I could not put it down. I can hardly wait to read book two in the series. Simper Fi!
