Rating: Summary: My list of KEEPERS Review: I just totally enjoyed this book. From the wit of Austin the Cat to Hell making its comments. I had a hard time putting it down.Claire is a Keeper that runs around our world sealing leaks of evil demons are trying to escape from their world into ours. Austin is her cat that comments about everything. Both are summoned to a hotel where Hell is trying to leak through from a hole in the basement. For the next three months the two live at the hotel with a ghost named Jaques, a bystander named Dean and Hell trying to seep through making its witty comment. They all go through the trials and tribulations of dealing with the other world in the most comedic sense. There is never a dull moment in this story. I would give this story even higher marks if I could and I don't get this crazy over books.
Rating: Summary: Do Try This One! Review: I found out about this book from one of the Listmania recommendations. Now, I am neither a fantasy reader nor a cat person, but I absolutely loved this book! The humor was great (just loved the pit of Hell's comments), the romance intriguing, and the fantasy was grounded enough so that I didn't have to comprehend a new universe before I could understand the story. The characters were well drawn and the storyline flowed. I read the second book in this series as a result, and enjoyed that one also. Keep them coming, Ms. Huff!
Rating: Summary: An engaging plot with a wide range of humor. Review: Generally, it's a high reccomentdation from me if I reread a book once a year. I've only had "Summon the Keeper" for a little over a year, and I've already read it three times. It's still as funny as the first time! The comedy ranges from puns and verbal slapstick to subtle references and sheer absurdity, and it all works. The characters are charming because they're all very flawed human beings (or cats, or holes to Hell, or whatever) with distinct personalities. I can't say exactly what made me love the plot so much, but it's a great combination of everything you wouldn't expect and an underlying suggestion that every myth or fairy tale you've ever heard is true in some fashion. While I'm naturally wary of the prospect of a sequel, I have high hopes that Huff can keep up this pattern of quirky comedy and general appeal.
Rating: Summary: the cat does play a role Review: The relations between the Keeper, the dead guy, and the cook are well worked out and in the same style as in the vampire series. She wants a relation but does not go for, then she goes for the wrong guy. All recover from that blunder, but she still refuses the right guy. It keeps you on edge throughout the book. The rest of the story is just entertainment around these relationships. I found the book not so thrilling as the vampire stories, but it is certainly entertaining.
Rating: Summary: The Cat Made me Buy It Review: I was killing time at the bookstore before an Orioles' game when the cover caught my eye. How serendipitous. This has since become one of my favorite books. It is genuinely spooky. But what I loved was the twist it gave to such familiar themes as sleeping beauty, Hallowe'en, the orphan boy who grows up to be a HERO, et. al. And the thought that the last time ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE coincided with the onset of [shudder] disco, made me laugh out loud. And if my cat could talk, I am sure it would sound like Austin.
Rating: Summary: You could be petting the cat... Review: I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I have a mixed opinion of the author as I have read some of her Quarters novels as a first encounter this author and was turned off, however this book was recommended to me by someone whom I trusted them in their urging to try THIS book. I'm very glad I did. I didn't put it down, racing though it wanting to see what happens next. I'd say it was a toss up as to who had the best lines, the cat or hell. Vastly enjoyable, and I'd recommend it for reading even if you have hit upon this author before and were not too thrilled.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Fantasy with Annoying Mannerisms Review: Tanya Huff turns the mundane world of a Canadian Bed and Breakfast establishment on its head with a portal to Hell in the furnace room, an evil Sleeping Beauty in room 6, and a talking cat with the second best lines in the book (Hell has the best lines). The witty dialogue never lets up as the reluctant Keeper is summoned to the B&B to either monitor or seal the gate into Hell, and to somehow nullify the evil of the sleeping Keeper in room 6, without waking her up. My problem with "Summon the Keeper" is the sexual innuendo. A bit here and there is okay, but Huff never lets up. She takes the stereotypical situation of "beautiful young women throwing themselves at hard-boiled hero" and turns it inside out: "Summon the Keeper" has two manly hunks (one of them a ghost) who fall for the female Keeper. I wouldn't describe the Keeper, Claire as 'hard-boiled', but she is unrelentingly crabby throughout the whole novel. Austin, the cat was much more likeable. My least favorite character was the ghost of a French-Canadian sailor who must have learned English by watching Warner Brothers' PePe LePew cartoons. He was a totally obnoxious stereotype, and he never let up. So, if you aren't easily annoyed by a growling heroine, a character described as "the hunky-yet-innocent handyman", and a ghost who talks and acts like a cartoon skunk, this is a very humorous and original fantasy.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Review: I could not put the book down, it was the greatest from the greatest cat alive(after of course my own precious cat, Myles) Austin to Hell. Read and devour it. I could not stop laughing. I read it somewhere that there will be ANOTHER BOOK out called THE SECOND SUMMONING..hopefully i am not wrong.
Rating: Summary: An enjoyable read Review: Tanya Huff is one of my favorite authors and *Summon the Keeper* is a good example why. A keeper is someone who repairs holes in the fabric of the universe and basically saves the world from being overrun by evil. Claire, the keeper, winds up in a rundown guest house with a hellhole in the basement, a resident lusty ghost, a caretaker/cook to die for, and several interesting and unusual guests. I especially enjoyed the retired Olympians. This is funnier than her blood series and I stayed up until three in the morning to finish it! I highly recommend this book, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will become a series.
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully entertaining Review: This cute story was so engaging I didn't want to stop reading until the very last page. I adore stories with talking cats and the cat in this book was absolutely hilarious! I kept eying my beautiful cat and wondering if she was just too smart to actually talk out loud! Crazy...sure! I will definitely be searching out more books from Tanya Huff. Witty and imaginative, just the ticket for a lazy, hot summer afternoon.
