Rating: Summary: Started out slow but gained speed......... Review: is the way I would describe this novel. In fact, it seems to go fast, then slow, then fast, then slow, until about the last 100 or so pages, which just FLY BY! And the way he leaves you hanging going into the second half is masterful! Another Star Wars beauty by Zahn!
Rating: Summary: Where's Chewie? Review: I missed the big Wookie, but at least he's not being a deadbeat dad like he often is. :-)I enjoyed the book, but not as much as the first Thrawn Trilogy. Zahn does a good job at weaving events from all of the Star Wars books into this book, but it just didn't have enough action like his other books. This book really seems like a set up for the one that follows, so perhaps I will enjoy it more in retrospect. Fans of Zahn's work MUST check out the Conqueror's trilogy! That is truly excellent!
Rating: Summary: Superb book! Review: I have to say that this is one of the best Star Wars books I've ever read. The characters in this book are masterfully written. No, they aren't exactly the same as the characters in the movie, but you have to remember that this is years past the movie, and people change. Situations change them, and as such, of course they're different! Timothy Zahn drops little hints about things that might be happening later on. For example, there was the character Shada D'ukal in his trilogy. She was so much of a side character, you probably had forgotten her. But here she pops up again, with Zahn's masterful rendering. And Mara Jade. I believe she is the best contribution to Star Wars any of the book writers have made. She is so believable, and she fits in perfetly. This book is a must read!
Rating: Summary: SUPERB Review: Timothy Zahn is definitly the best author I have ever read a book by, and anyone who cries neigh to that is a fool (or can't read). The first book of the series, Hand of Thrawn, is an incredible journey through a galaxy far, far away, and then some. For anyone who likes action, adventure, science fiction, Star Wars, or just superb writing in general, I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Very good, but... Review: This review will generally touch on both of the books in the series. I'd say, overall, the writing is the equal of Zahn's "Heir to the Empire" series--that is to say, it's a very fast and fun read (I finished both novels in less than a week). I'd also like to say that Zahn's novels are the best Star Wars novels on the market, but that certainly isn't saying much. What prevented me from giving these books five stars is the fact that Zahn does a terrible job of preserving the integrity of the personalities of characters from the movies. Ironically enough, he writes the original characters so poorly that the ones of his creation tend to be more compelling. In my opinion, he takes far too many liberties in his expansions of the Force/Jedi concepts (and with all the history and baggage he gives Luke Skywalker in the time period following "The Last Command" and preceeding "Specter of the Past"). Also, the dialogue is highly mediocre. Nonetheless, I'd recommend these strongly to any Star Wars fan who's able to overlook the flaws I mentioned. Between Zahn's ingenius plots, exciting scenes and sequences, and spell-binding military and politcal intrigue, I found the flaws highly "overlookable".
Rating: Summary: Another instant success. Zahn is a genious. Review: This book continues Zahn's legacy from the empire series. It is an amazing story with some familiar charchters and great new ones.
Rating: Summary: Good but not as good as the first three. Review: This was a good story with some particularly good characters, Major Tierce,Pelloeon and Talon Karrade for instance with some good action scenes but unfortunatly I cannot help but compare it with his first three novels so I do not belive it is as good although it is not bad and worth 4 stars but it is missing the ace character and that is Thrawn and it would also be nice if the Empire won for once. I must also say though that Timothy Zahn is the best writer on Star Wars with great characters.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, suspenseful...but how come the Empire never wins? Review: This is a marvellous book and really brought Zahn back into the Universe. He uses an elegant touch to blend excitement, suspense, humor, and fear into just the right amounts to make this book a bestseller. He even adds a little hint of a possible romance episode between Luke and Mara. I have no problem with this book at all, hence the five stars. But what I can't understand is why can't just one of the Star Wars novels have the Empire come out completely on top? I know they're the bad guys and they're supposed to lose, but where's the fun in that?! Every book I read I keep hoping the Empire wins. Maybe that's why I like Zahn so much. He always tries to give the Empire an edge. I think this book and all his others are all excellents reads.
Rating: Summary: A great story Review: Timothy Zahn really out did himself
Rating: Summary: Truly a sad excuse. Review: Timothy Zahn has taken it on himself to write the book(s) in which the Empire finally collapses and surrenders to the New Republic. The characters are great. The set-up is good. The final result is a cliffhanger. The second book, Vision of the Future, is an attempt to bring together everything that happened in all of the novels written to date. Considering what he had to work with, Zahn did a great job. Unfortunately, he included a lot of garbage (such as anything written by Kevin J Anderson) and completely destroyed his product. This is a must miss.
