Rating: Summary: Okay Review: This was an okay book, not her best. It is about the period where christianity was moving into Britian and pushing out the pagan ways. You would probably enjoy this book if you like tales of King Arthur. It has a lot of woman's lib struggles in the plot.
Rating: Summary: I'm sorry, but I have to go with the tedious approach... Review: I picked up this book because I was awaiting Mists of Avalon, for which I was number 17 on the hold list at the library. The Forest House looked okay, and it was all on the way, being a prequel to the Mists. At home, I opened the book and read, but found the text so lengthy and dull! Maybe I was just too anxious to skim through the book and get the basics needed to enjoy the Mists, but in my opinion, Marion Zimmer Bradley stretched out the story at least 200 pgs. more than necessary. The plot was simple enough and we could have gotten the point without the extra babble. Eilan is a young priestess in training in the Forest House (where Druid priestesses have gathered in recovering from Roman conquer and the rape that came of it). Eilan is in love with a young Roman soldier named Gaius, also called Gawen. (Not to be confused with the story of Priestess of Avalon.) Their love is forbidden - this is before the Beltane tradition - but obviously it happens anyway. They have a son (Gawen) who appears to be just one of the background in the long run, though he is constantly said to be fated as the Sacred High King. The book finally ends with Eilan and Gaius's death, together and in love. Gawen (the son) is sent to Avalon with Eilan's friend, the priestess Caillean, who had reestablished the Driud house there. If you're a huge Marion Zimmer Bradley/Mists of Avalon fan and crave more, then you'll probably like this book, but it is definitely not worth your time if you just wanted the Mists.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I devoured The Mists of Avalon in just a few days and loved it. Sorry, but this book just didn't match up...maybe because there were no familiar characters to guide the story.
Rating: Summary: The Past Reborn Review: I have read "The Forest House" countless times and it never, ever gets old. The entire series is completely captivating. I fall in love with all of the characters every time I read. This book has opened a door of magic for me, and it can do the same for anyone... if they let it. Give yourself over to the possibility of a higher power.
Rating: Summary: Pure Excellence Review: I can't understand some of the reviews and ratings, 5 stars isn't enough for this book. I couldn't put it down and read in 2 days. Absolutely wonderful!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely as good as Mists! Review: I was apprehensive in reading this book. But by the first 5 pages you are entranced and sunk into the world of the book. I read it in 3 days!! I couldn't put it down. Though no book could compare to Mists of Avalon, this comes a close second. As usual Ms. Bradley writes her characters so real you feel as if they're in the same room as you or witnessing a scene in front of your eyes. Amazing effort!
Rating: Summary: Well worth a fans read Review: This a good book that I enjoyed. The story starts strong and is nicely done. The end was a bit rushed or odd, I take that to be an editorial thing.. Definately worth the read for all Fans of the era or of MZB in general.
Rating: Summary: Recent devotee of Marion Zimmer Bradley Review: Although it probably is difficult to re create the wonderful essence of Mists of Avalon, I still loved Forest House. I thought it was well characterized and did not expect similarities with Mists, which was altogether a different age, culture and mix of natives and foreigners. Altogether, MZB's writing always seem to capture the bona fide soul of the times.
Rating: Summary: Magickal, Adventurous....but needed Somthing More Review: After reading Mysts of Avalon I fell in love with Marion Zimmer Bradley's writing. It was the best book I have ever read, The Forest House was well written. The plot was strong and the characters had the same life and relatablity as the characters in Mysts however, The Forest House left me hanging. I think it lacked the completeness of Mysts. The end came at you rather too quickly and I think it could have been better explained. Perhaps it's just after seeing the masterpeice every other worke seams dimmed, but I think The Forest House was not as good as it could have been.
Rating: Summary: Inspired Review: This book was wonderful. I really got into the romance/lost love story of Gaius and Eilan. I thought that this book was very well written & it was so descriptive...I just sat and read for hours, totally losing touch with my own reality and immersing myself in the reality of the book. I know that this book was well researched, and it was very interesting to see how the relationship between the Romans and the Britons evolved over the course of the book. There is just something about the Arthurian legend...And this book sets it all up for us. Definitely a must read.
