Summary: The Greatest sci-fi book I've ever read
Review: Until a couple of years ago (maybe 5 or 6), I wasn't an avid reader of sci-fi or fantasy. Then this book changed all of that. I picked up a copy of it, and basically read it in 2 days, it was so engrossing and wonderfully written. The dolphins in this book have such varied personalities that you begin to feel attached to Capt. Criedeiki and all the rest. And the entire uplift idea makes for such a wide variety of aliens, that each book in the series has its own signature antagonist species. I would recommend this book to anyone who can read english and loves the all important storyline and creativity of this masterful writer.

Summary: An extraordinary work of science fiction
Review: Complex, well-thought out and thoroughly entertaining. Not for readers who like pat answers, rather intended for those who like to savor their reading.

Summary: A Must Read Sci-Fi Classic!!!!
Review: Since reading Startide Rising, I have not only read everything else Brin has written, but I have bought the paperback MANY time to give to friends with MUST READ instructions. This is absolutely one of the best real Sci-Fi books written in the last 20 years and I am an avid reader of almost exclusively science fiction.

Brin's development of a galactic culture based on the raising up of pre sentient beings to sentience and the following term of indenture to the Patron race is great! It's even better because the reader can identify with the "Wolfing" human race as they buck time rusted and rigid galactic society.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The only thing I have seen lately on a par is "Ender's Game" and before that "Dune".

Enjoy.

Summary: I dislike Sci Fi but this...
Review: I usually read romance novels (what better escapist stuff is there). My husband asked me to read one of his books and I agreed, he handed me Startide Rising, knowing I like dolphins. I orginially was going to read it just because he wanted me too, but then I got really into it. This book had everything, adventure, action, drama and even a bit of romance. The only reason I did not give this book a ten is because it leaves some characters hanging. I realize that there are sequels (I've read them too) but they still don't answer all my questions, maybe the third book will. Maybe it won't and I will have to come up with my own answers. If there is anyone else out there who is planning on reading a book just to make their spouse happy, this is a great one to read, because you will really like it and you can't wait for the next ones. I promise.

Summary: Reading this book was painful
Review: I thought that Ender's Game was a 10 and this book was a 3. I read it because it also won the Hugo and Nebula awards. It is over 400 pages and the first two or three hundred are boring. Brin opens a number of threads but in those 400+ pages, he only manages to resolve one or two of them. The revelation about the agressive dolphin was good but other than that, the rest of the book felt like a waste of time. Very disappointing after reading all the glowing "10" reviews.

Summary: Exceptional. This book is a classic. A must read.
Review: Exceptional. Startide Rising is on par with Dune as my favorite book. The concept is fantastic. The delivery sharp. This book is a must read for all lovers of Sci-fi and recommended for book lovers in general. I am chomping at the bit for every sequel in the series.

Summary: A real page turner! Great humour also.
Review: I'll admit that Startide Rising isn't deep intellectual reading, but it is such a fun book, crammed with novel ideas, that I found it impossible to put down, and would recommend it to everyone. Brin's humour shines through in the caricatured aliens and the infernal Niss machine, and many times I found myself laughing out loud. This book is truly a page turner. The Uplift War is almost as good (8/10). Sundiver isn't that great, and Brightness Reef I found quite boring and tedious.

Summary: Silly, Dolphin Rubbish
Review: Yuk.
In this series, the author includes dolphins as some of the main characters.

They wear harnesses with various contraptions attached in order to interact with their environment and they have been genetically improved so they can communicate with their human shipmates.

If you can swallow that you may like this series. I couldn't and returned the books

Summary: David Brin gives you high adventure and a good time.
Review: It's always a pleasure to find a new author who writes well. Startide Rising will take you into galaxy of intrigue and danger. A place where humans are considered backward and in need of a protector species to uplift them into galactic society. A lot of species think 100,000 years of servitude would have been a fair price to uplift the humans. But the human aren't cooperating. They have uplifted themselves (very rare) and uplifted two other species besides (unheard of). Get ready for an exciting ride

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Entertaining adventure story.
Review: A good read that doesn't quite live up to its reputation. The plot bubbles along nicely and many of the characters are engaging, but the story and the dialogue gets awfully silly at times. Not a masterpiece perhaps, but fun nonetheless
