Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A GRIPPING INTRODUCTION TO DEAN KOONTZ
Review: I mentioned to a Scottish friend of mine I was a Stephen King's fan. She recommended me Dean Koontz for a change. I bought "Lightning" and had the impression I was going to read an inferior Stephen King's clone. SHAME ON ME! Although the book started with some elements of just another usual horror tale , as the plot unravelled, Koontz dealt with the theme more plausibly than his counterpart would probably have. A convincing insight on the always intriguing subject of time-travelling is given; and though not so deep as H. G. Wells' "The Time Machine" or Isaac Asimov's "The End of Eternity", "Lightning" represents an excellent option for readers in search of a mind-teasing tale.

Summary: One of the best Koontz books!

Summary: Excellent weave of present and past in this fast pace tale
Review: Excellent fast pace tale of time travel woven into a horror novel second best only to Koontz's Mr. Murder.

Summary: Bad characters in in otherwise good book.
Review: I've had some pretty bad experiences with Koontz's novels, but this wasn't one of them. I found this book to be surprisingly interesting.

The major flaw with this book (as in many Koontz books) is the characters. The characters in this book are horribly unrealistic and horribly done in general. Koontz hesitates to let us into the character's mind and this becomes especially noticeable during the story's multiple traumatic events. The characters show barely any emotion at all, besides the passing mention of the deceased person.

The way the character's act is even worse. For instance, our heroine, Laura Shane, is initially the semi-softspoken novelist who seems to be quite normal and down to earth. Suddenly she becomes some kind of gun maniac, toting not one, not two, but three fully automatic, illegal Uzi's as well as about ten hand guns. That was completely out of character and Koontz could have handled it much better!

Then we have Thelma Ackerson the comedian. Koontz gets too carried away with the fact that she is a comedian. Thelma's dialog seems like nothing but a big comedy routine: wise-crack after joke after wise-crack. First of all, I am sure this is not how real comedians talk, second of all and more importantly this quickly becomes annoying (especially when none of the cracks are funny in the least bit).

Finally we have the eight-year-old kid who has to be the worst character in the whole book. He doesn't act like a kid, he doesn't talk like a kid, he doesn't think like a kid (when Koontz actually lets us know his thoughts).

The book started off slow and remained that way for the first half. This was especially hard to swallow because of the horribly done characters, but it did have its moments. Then near the middle the book suddenly gets much better. I thought I saw the direction this book was heading a mile away, but it ended up pulling some pretty good surprises. From there on out the book presents some pretty interesting situations and finishes off with a strong ending.

Despite the extremely bad characters, Lightning turned out to be a pretty good read.

Summary: Koonz's Lightning Brings a new Twist to time travel
Review: This novel is probably the best novel Dean Koonz has ever wrote. The usual plot twists an turns coupled with the sci-fi elements gives this novel the feeling of a sci-fi mystry thriller. How the topic of Time Travel is tackled is another halmark of this novel because Koonz looks at the idea from a totally differnt angle. If I was going to recommend any Dean R. Koonz book to someone who has never read his matterial before, Lightning would be the book.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Far-fetched science-fiction tale
Review: Despite the absurd plot- so typical in Koontz novels- the book was surprisingly thoughtful, but I still ended up seeing it as science-fiction more than suspense. The first half of the book was the best. The characters were likable, especially the child. In short, it's not Koontz at his best but still an okay read.

Summary: Emotional Rollercoaster
Review: 1. The character Laura Shane was terrific she was a strong confident woman with the zest for life to rebound through all kinds of turmoil. Dean Koontz out did his self with this story. His books guide a person to a different time era and for a brief period of time one can escape for a thrill ride of adventure an intrique it is just fantastic.
