Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Disappointing; Niven could take some pointers from Asimov Review: I'm glad I bought this with a gift certificate. Niven seems to be too busy trying to impress with his scientific knowledge to take time to entertain. I read 2/3 of the book and finally gave up. I don't really care about the characters and I don't really care about Ringworld or its inhabitants. He should follow Asimov's lead and make the science serve the story instead of the other way around. If you like hard sf that actually entertains while making you think, try Stephen R. Donaldson's 5-volume GAP cycle.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Fantastic Book! But not for folk with short attention spans Review: I never had any complaints about this book, but I can see some readers getting lost if they do not understand the concepts introduced or if they have extremely short attention spans. You don't have to read his other works to enjoy this one.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: totally VOID of the BREATH OF LIFE-depth-EXCITEMENT Review: After reading all the high praise I was raring to read Ringworld. What a let down. Why did Nevin even bother. He doesn't seem to care about telling his story. I know I didn't care about the characters, their journey...etc. nothing. There was no spark!Niven just couldn't flesh out his brilliant ideas. The story, the people lacked depth and excitement. It was an emotionally deadpan telling. There were no feelings, no high-five crescendos or swoops into possible doom. Descriptions were very poor. I never got a real picture in my mind as to where I was or what I was suppose to be seeing. Frank Herbert (author of the DUNE series) must of been a literary SF genius or a lone freak of nature because I have not been able to find a book/author that comes within light years of him. And DUNE was written in 1965!! You think SF authors would be required to meet or at least come close to Frank Herbert's quality in order to be considered for publishing What happened to pride of workmanship?
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A SF Classic, Original Concept Review: There are two things required of any good SF book: a great concept and good storytelling. In the first department, there's no doubt Niven's Ringworld is a true SF original. The concept of a continuous, inhabitable ring around a sun, requires a considerable stretch of the imagination. It's difficult to grasp how big such a thing would have to be, and the amount of energy/power/expertise it would take to construct it. I think many of the negative reviewers here failed to get the scope of such a construct, and were left wondering what the fuss is about. On storytelling, while this isn't Niven's strong suit the Ringworld story is good. Not great but it's good enough. It would help to read his earlier stuff on Puppeteers and Protectors, since Ringworld is essentially a continuation of his Known Worlds (a book title). The concept of luck, embodied by Teela Brown, is also original - that luck can be a "force", like electromagnetism or gravity, is again an idea some readers have enough imagination to "get", while the rest don't. So, you must read Ringworld as well as Ringworld Engineers, which is actually a bit better. Also read his early stuff to get more background on the characters in Ringworld, particularly Puppeteers. That said, Niven storytelling can be frustrating, not so much in Ringworld, but most of his later work is dreadful. Don't read anything after Engineers and the Mote in God's Eye (very good). Regrettably, the third Ringworld novel recently released is awful, (so awful I've forgotten the title). But again, Ringworld is a classic and a must read.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Good book but not for kids! Review: Thanks to the review noting the sexual content of this book. I had bought it for my 14 yr. old son on someone's recommendation but then decided to read it first. It's a shame that the author goes into so much gratuitous detail. My son would have liked the book but I think I'll wait 10 years to give it to him.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Great concept but NO Review: I'm only sixteen but this book was really a disapointment. I had to do this for a report. I mean the idea about a ring world is great-no fantastic, but he just can't get a good story going to support it. The plot was lame. These guys are so intriged about this ring around a sun and end up crashing on it. And they want to try and find a way off it? If their so interested why not study and look around first than leaving. The characters are interesting but stupid. An overgrown catlike guy, a 2headed scared freak, a 200 year old man who, i have to admit, starts off humorous but then dies down to annoying. Then there's this girl who was bred for luck that likes this 200y guy. I've heard of marrying someone older than you but this is just unbelievable. And what kind of idiot would breed someone for LUCK?! It was very slow, boring, and not even exciting. I'll have to agree with these people, it was really terrible. If i was Niven, i would think about rewriting it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: One of the most imaginative books i have read Review: Trying to visualize the Arc at night was what caught my imagination. Larry Niven has got easy style of writing and if you read this in the context of the 'known space' it is fascinating how he unfolds the entire history of a 1000 years. Maybe that is just the way we may go. Isaac Asimov has mainly human beings in his Foundation Saga but Larry Niven brings in various other species and this is more probable.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: A good read. Review: I have read most of Niven's work. I loved the book even if it was slow at times. I think it helps to have read other Niven books that involve the characters 'Luis Wu' and 'Chmee'.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: A disappointing read Review: The idea, at least, was promising. Unfortunately, Niven writes poorly - certainly not at a level that would be acceptable in any other genre of literature. His alien characters felt more like B-movie human actors dressed up in bad costumes. I wouldn't recommend this to any adult, since there are far more literate works of science fiction, and I certainly wouldn't recommend this to young teenagers, since it is mostly sexist drivel.
