Rating: Summary: Breathtaking! Review: I laughed, I cried, I shed tears in frustration & I sighed..... What a wonderful story. What hooked me was the dramatic & mysterious prologue, then I kept reading till the wee hours of the morning just to know what'll happen to Rhapsody! The more I read the more I loved the characters. Rhapsody is a beautiful strong woman, a Namer which means she can change things or people if she knew their REAL name. The Brother is a deadly assasin who can pinpoint the heartbeat of anyone who was born in the doomed island of Seren.Grunthor, a giant sergent major who is funny & strong. Rhapsody mistakingly frees The Brother & gets thrown in with both men into a journey through the earth core, where they end up miles & centuries away from their homeplace. You get caught up in building their new life & dicovering Rhapsody's old past. A very interesting & engaging story. Read it!! I recommend it to fantacy/Sci-fiction fans who enjoy Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan & Anne Bishop. Good reading.. & thank you Ms. Haydon for this very enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: Delightful Review: This entire series by Elizabeth Haydon has been an absolute delight to lose myself in. The web of relationships, development of the characters and gradually revealed picture of a world in another time and place made it unpleasant to return to reality. Without being able to critically comment on the finer points of literature, I limit my assessment of books to the extent I become fascinated with the alternative reality - and the minute I finished reading Rhapsody I was out of the house to find Prophecy. The tantalising clues left throughout the book to deeper, hidden meanings and themes keep you guessing and as I am still awaiting the arrival of the final book in the series, I nearly cried in frustration when I finished the second book within two days of it's purchase (that's not reading full-time!)
Rating: Summary: Child of Blood Review: Wonderful story that starts off very strangely, but becomes an engaging tale that I could not put down! The characters are very rich and stay with you. The story itself is so interesting and original-something fresh for a change. I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone!
Rating: Summary: Definite Love-Hate Relationship Review: This one really was a difficult one to decide on. On the one hand, the many details in the plot are creative and do get your attention and interest. On the other hand, a lot of them go nowhere. Over and over again I'd find myself waiting for some explanation of some intriguing beginning -- only to find myself going down some other path altogether. I guess if you don't care much about continuity it's a fun ride, but I found it just too frustrating. Still, by the end of the book I was kind of wishing for more.
Rating: Summary: bad, bad , bad... Review: I like stories. I like going to other worlds, created by other people and meeting the characters that wander around inside their heads. Sadly, this book took me into a story that spent almost a hundred pages underground with no scenery and introduced me to characters that made me skim some chapters in the hope that they might die soon. The prologue almost made me throw the book away. It was heavy on explanation and the characters redefined the word shallow. Once past that point, the story got a little better, but not much. Another reviewer mentioned that the main character was too perfect. She was absolutely beautiful, was kind to everyone, had a lovely singing voice and adored children. Though the beauty thing was reasonable, given the story line, the character's stubborn ignorance of her appearance (in order to remain perfectly modest)was beyond heavy handed. But I will argue the point that she was perfect. As pointed out by a character in the story, she's also a complete idiot. You should not put a bimbo as the main character of a story. I gave this book two stars. One star was for the fact that the world Ms Haydon created is rather creative and well depicted. The second star was for the few characters that showed, if not a three dimensional personality, at least the hope of gaining one. The second star is mostly for Achmed, resident cynic and oportunistic bastard, and the scattering of characters like Jo, Grunthor, and Llauron, who were almost three dimensional.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I picked this up on a whim one day in a book store because it looked interesting and I must say this was one of the times that an impulse buy actually payed off. I thought this was an excellent book that sets up what is sure to be an interesting series. The three main characters are cut from a typical fantasy mold, but Haydon manages to introduce some wrinkles into each one to make them seem fresh. I read through this book very quickly and the only thing I found somewhat unpleasant was Rhapsody's obsession with children(too black and white). On the whole a very pleasant read and highly reccomended.
Rating: Summary: Rhapsody Review: This book drew me in- it only took me three nights to read, because I couldn't put it down. However, I would like to see better character development. I was mildly irritated at how predictable the characters were- they were, I felt, too stereotypical (but I willingly concede that, despite recognizing this, I truly liked many of them). I REALLY liked the magic system- I found it quite refreshing, and the story is highly compelling. I'm itching to get my hands on the sequel. Beware- the book is as addictive as caffeine, and it'll do a better job of keeping you up. :)
Rating: Summary: Loses momentum after the first half of the book Review: "Rhapsody" starts out very strongly and keeps a good pace for the first half of the book. The characters are very likeable, and the writing and plot elements are excellent. Throughout the first half of the book, the story keeps a good pace and kept me turning the page. Unfortunately... the momentum of the book had just about completely stopped when I got about half way through. I found the last half of the book rather uninteresting; it was a real chore for to get to the last page. When I finally did finish "Rhapsody", I was left with a vaguely disappointed feeling. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I guess I just found the end of the book rather generic. Because the book started so strongly and the writing style was well developed, I may give another of this author's books a chance.
Rating: Summary: READ THIS!!! Review: I love this book!!! Every book in the trilogy starts out with a prologe,I'm guessing on the third book, that pulls you into the story. Rating: Summary: Poorly-written and over the top Review: I love fantasy and I love romance, and I love them mixed together, but this book is just plain silly. I bought it, ...but couldn't get past the prologue. In the prologue, a 14-year-old boy meets a girl his own age, and immediately decides that she is his soulmate, that she has a soul purer than anyone else on earth, and that he can no longer be happy except when he's by her side. They consummate their love, amid much sighing and weeping and gazing joyously at the other person. When the 14-year-old boy is not openly crying at the sight of his beloved, he's howling on the ground in torment. The emotions are that over the top. To me, it reads like a ...Harlequin romance. This first girl from the prologue (besides having the purest soul of any human being) is amazingly beautiful. When I saw that the heroine was also going to be amazingly beautiful (with long, golden curls) and amazingly pure, I thought this is too much to wade through. Especially given that it's part of a trilogy and given that there are so many other books to read. Life's too short to read something so silly...
