Summary: Terrific premise, fine writing, but not much of a story
Review: This is a well-written novel, with an excellent premise--a newborn female, through magic, being transformed (temporarily) into an infant boy because the evil king wants his son, and not the newborn (who is the rightful heir), to succeed him to the throne. The characters are developed well: from the hero (who does not know he is a girl), to his companions, to the witches and wizards (some of whom know the secret and some of whom do not). Surprizingly, the evil king has rarely been present in the story up to now.
The problem is that the story itself proceeds in an entirely predictable pattern. Once it is clear what is going on (this takes two or three chapters), there are almost no unexpected twists and turns, which are the hallmark of the best fantasy writing.
That being said, I recommend the book and anxiously await the next installment of what I assume will be a three (or more) volume series.

Summary: One of my more painful reads lately
Review: After reading about this time as "history" in Lynn's Nightrunner Series, it was a pleasure to come back and see it happen in real-time.

However, what wasn't so fun was watching what the characters had to do to get the good we know is coming later. I found the end to be emotionally draining, in the same way that the movie Dead Ringers was. While I wasn't actually shouting "no, please, don't..." at the characters, it was a near thing.

Review: This was the first book I've read by this author, and I *LOVED* it! I thought the plot was exciting, the characters well-drawn and the prose well-crafted. I enjoyed it so much that I've searched out other books by this author, in hopes that they live up to this caliber of storytelling. Now, my only question is, how soon will the sequel be published?...

Summary: Wonderful
Review: "The Bone Doll's Twin" by Lynn Flewelling is one of the best books I've read in a long time. All of the main characters are believable and interestingly drawn and now that I have finished the book I find myself wondering what will happen to them in the next book.
It is dark fantasy though and Flewelling isn't afraid to let you get attached to a character and then kill her or him off, which I generally don't like but the writing was good and the story excellent. I do wish that this hadn't been quite such a dark vision though for the sake of the hero/heroine Tobin who seems to just be almost unreasonably mired in misfortune. I don't generally enjoy a fantasy that has such a dark vision of the world but Flewelling stayed true to her theme throughout and it ended up working for me. This was a haunting and engrossing read and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Summary: Left me wanting...
Review: FOR more! This is my first book from Lynn Flewelling, and I will be buying the rest because she has the ability to write a tale that has story lines that seem so different yet they are all running down the same course of the river, perhaps one is caught in an eddy or another rushing in the middle of the rapids! Being pagan I truly loved how steeped in symbology and magic and honor!

A book to read for sure! I cannot wait to find out what is on the plate for Tobin now that ... well I will leave that to you when you read the tale...

Summary: This book pulls you in and keeps you there
Review: I'm not a big ghost story fan and yet this book was hard to put down. It wasn't scary, but more eerie -- the characters stay with you long after you have put this book down (when you can put it down). A great read, an outstanding author. A good book for any fan of fantasy and myth. The hard part is waiting for the next one....

Summary: Mesmerizing novel of destiny and the loss of innocence.
Review: Flewelling's first three novels about, for the most part, Seregil and Alec were the epitome of charm and wit and adventure. I felt swept up into the author's capacious world, and somehow each book just got better.

When i realized that "The Bone Doll's Twin" was set generations before the other books, i wondered what new adventure Flewelling might tell and especially if she could create more endearing characters, as is her gift.

It took only a few pages for me to realize that this book was going to be very different. From the beginning i was in no way disappointed at the absence of the characters that i had enjoyed so much in her previous three novels. But rather, i was stunned by the way she was telling this new story. It was as though she had mastered some new dimension of writing and was pounding it into every paragraph.

The telling of this story is lucid and gripping. It is very much about relationships. A wizard and her apprentice, each of whom confront their fates like straight lines piercing the curvature of those around them. A boy who is a girl and his broken father and mother and shadow of a brother. That same boy and a friend that becomes much more. A mountain witch and her lonely vigil. A man and his never forgotten love and duty...
Everyone is confronted with a loss of innocence, and Flewelling shows us how these losses ripple across the relationships, changing everyone in the process.

Summary: New Author for my collection
Review: After buying books in this market that I have found either boring and/or repitious, I picked up this book because of the reviews in the front. What a GREAT choice I made!! The characters in this book are so REAL that you feel as though you know them personally and you ache for them, and feel their joy. The story-line was fantastic, and I had a hard time putting this book down. I can't wait for the forth-coming titles in this series, and I will definetly be purchasing her other books soon.

"The Bone Doll's Twin" is a book I will read over and over again, and I rank it right up there with my beloved Anne McCaffrey (Any and all Pern novels), Raymond E. Feist (The Magician series), David Eddings (Polgara and Belgarath), and Stephen R. Donaldson (The Chronicles of Thomas Coventant). All of these authors have characters and stories that linger with you for days, and "The Bone Doll's Twin" will linger with me until the next one comes out, and for many years to come.

For any true sci-fi/fantasy fan, this book is a must have!
