Rating: Summary: Terrific!!! Review: I have just finished reading "In Death Ground" for the second time and I'm still fascinated by the titanic battles and the imagination that comes when the order of battle is laid out...9 superdreadnoughts, 10 battleships....etc. I consider this book as one of the best military sci-fi that I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I ever read. A lot fun to read Review: I was complete enthralled by this book. The Space combat was action pack and believable. The characters were not quite 3-D but who cares, this is a Space Opera. The only complaint I have with the book is the lack of an ending. The war hasn't ended and I don't really know who won.
Rating: Summary: Powerful and gripping! Review: In Death Ground is one of the best sci-fi books that I've read! Full of suspense and action. It tells the story of the Terran Federation (a galaxy spanning human empire) in its war for survival against the genocidal Bugs. But the Bugs have a powerful industrial base, and a war machine many times the size of the Terran Federation battle fleet. This book is filled with gripping and suspensful battle sequences as the Terrans and their allies, the Orions, Gorm, and the Opiuchi, fight a desperate war against the Bugs. A must read for any sci-fi lover!
Rating: Summary: good book, but cuts to break and never comes back Review: this is a great story. Weber and White did a great job of hinting at this story with crusade and insurection, but it's slow to start, and stops without anything being resolved, it doesn't read like part of series, it just stops, or else it'ld be 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: Best of Weber yet Review: The Great Alliance of 'Crusade' fame is at war again and this time the perspectives of humans and their allies looks bleak. But Weber's heroes know too well that they have nothing to lose: this war wouldn't be finished with a treaty - this is fight for survival. "In difficult ground, press on; In encircled ground, devise stratagems; In death ground, fight."This book is the best of what I had read from Weber. It combines high quality description of high-tech interstellar warfare with much larger scope than in his previous Honor series. Excellent description of deep space battles, constant tension maintaining from first to the last page and truly 'strategic' outlook combines to create an excellent reading. Can't wait for sequel. Must have for every fun of interstellar warfare. I'm a little surprised, though, by some of previous reviewers complains about 'lack of character development'. I believe there is some misunderstanding here. Hard-core military SF (or space opera, if you want) is not supposed to emulate 'War and Peace', but it doesn't neccessary mean that it's worse! They are just different kind of literature and can't be directly compared. Extensive 'characterization' in "In death ground" would be as out of place as lifestory of _insert-name-here_ lieutenant from Omaha beach in 'The Second World War' or love story in 'The Victory at Sea'. In my opinion, additional 'human interaction' element to this novel could be entertaining, perhaps, but actually would add nothing.
Rating: Summary: Great story but the second half is missing. Review: Great book but only half (or maybe a third?) of the story. I can deal with the odd science and the lifting of ideas from history because that's what science fiction is about. And besides, it reads so well. But I do think was a cheap trick to leave so many story lines open and that's the only reason it didn't get 5 stars. Where's the next book?
Rating: Summary: Great Science Fiction Review: For the Diehard Science Fiction fan this book is first rate shootum up earthlings against aliens type of book. It does take alot of ideas and character types from other stories and computer games. It is good entertainment plain and simple. Don't look for alot of depth and soulful writings. But it is a great lunch or bathroom break book.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: They were nicknamed "Bugs". Like a hive they swarmed toward all planets that showed human life. The Orions could be next. The Orions were the catlike allies of the humans. Together they fought the Bugs. Together they fought for the survival of their races! The Bugs saw them only as a food source. Something to be caught and eaten. The way Bugs thought were so inhuman. Even their own Bug lives meant nothing to them. They seemed to be an enemy with no fear. Only hunger. Vanessa Murakuma starts off as Rear Admiral. She is determined that if a race is going to be wiped out in this war, it is NOT going to be the Humans! "In difficult ground, press on; In encircled ground, devise stratagems; In death ground, fight." ***Enjoyed this one. It is not one of Weber's famous Honor Harrington books, but it is right up there in action!***
Rating: Summary: A riveting action book Review: This book is a straight slug match between a star federation meeting an horrifying opponent of great power. This type of story is not new, however, the style of writing is superb and the twists in the tactical situation keep you on edge. A great read, makes you hope for a fast sequel, which is probably a good part of the idea ! But I dont mind, very enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: Pulse pounding and riveting. Review: I found this book to be a great story, and that is what it is. Its a story of racial boundries between two races and the difrences they overcome through the hardship of intersteller war with an enemy like no other. If you want strong characters and lots of background go read something else. this book is fast and to the point. Many things pop up in a chapter and if you miss it youll get confused quikly. Overall I liked the story, its momentum and the characters interactios with the challenges they face. A very good read. Cant wait for the sequeal.
