Rating: Summary: The sequel! I want the sequel! Review: I loved this book and I just could not stop reading it, but... the book finishes just in the middle of the war and there was no warning of that. It has been three years since the authors wrote it: when shall we read the sequel?!
Rating: Summary: High Action but where's the end Review: This is a fun book; really kind of mindless violent space opera in the grandest tradition. The only thing I really didn't like was a lack of closure in the end. Clearly this book was written with the intent of continued sequals in a nerver-ending war. But I didn't sense a true closing point when the book ended. As this was a fun book I was quite willing to live with that assuming the sequael would continue the romp though space and war. I am afraid the author may have built up the enemy to the point he doesn't know how to bring this to a conclusion and thus the long pause between sequals. For those who like military battles, slightly underbuilt charecters, but lots of big battle scenes this is a fun entertaining book.
Rating: Summary: An excellent read Review: I believe this is one of the most interesting books I have read in a while. It was impossible to put down and I was able to finish it in 2 days, even though it was 600 odd pages long. However, there is no sequel to the book, and it needs one. I have been reading through some other reviews, and someone wrote that they had heard from the publishers that another book is coming out. Two questions though, when?, and why not now? Really, I'm not a patient man, I've been waiting for over a year for a sequel. Though, with the writing in this book, it should be worth it. To all future readers, be warned, he will HAVE to read a sequel.
Rating: Summary: Weber equals good book, but slightly disappointed Review: Hmmm, well first, let me say that I enjoyed this book, as the others from Weber. I always get choked up when a character in his books dies that i have become attached to. As for why I give this 3 stars.1. No warning of unfinished ending. I started to get suspicious in the last 20 pages that they wouldn't finish the bugs. 2. Cloaking. In the early part of the book we see a very superior cloaking technology the bugs use to ambush the 1st couple of terran units. We also see how good the bugs sensors are, since we are led to believe the 1st survey group always goes in cloaked. BUT, the bugs seemed to have absolutely no problem pinpointing them. THEN..... later, the bugs seem to make almost no use of this cloaking technology where it would help them the most. 3. Portrayed as completely alien and with "Superior drive technology" on the back cover, I have to wonder what this superior driv was supposed to be. I kept expecting the Bugs to be able to warp through to other systems outside the warp point, that would have been superior. Admiral-What do you mean they appeared 200,000 kilometers away from the warp point?!?!?! 4. If the Bugs are so alien, why do they seem to build all their ships to terran specs? We keep seeing references to how the Bugs use "civilian drives" and "military drives" on their vessels, also, the weapon systems seem to fall well within design specs of terran weapons..... Why did I keep asking myself what was so different about them? Their motives are not clear, but other than that they seem to be just another Terran race with Terran technology. Even when they invent new stuff, its just variations on terran weapons.. I kept waiting for ships with alien specs.... Argggggg.
Rating: Summary: Amazing book! Review: I loved this book! It was one of the best book I've ever read about Interstellar War! David, you wrote this book three years ago! What about the sequel?
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book with a Difficult Beginning Review: Despite the fact that this book has already been reviewed 66 times, I decided to add just one more because I haven't seen anything with my simple suggestion. If you buy this book be prepared for about 70 to 80 pages of fairly slow going. A co-worker and I, who are both fans of David Weber and highly motivated to read this novel, found the beginning fairly tedious. I personally thought about giving up on it a number of times in the first couple of chapters but decided instead to skip ahead and try again. I am very glad I did! This is a wounderful novel with a great plot and excellent characterizations more then worth the effort it takes to read it. So my suggestion is this, if you buy this book and find the beginning difficult skip ahead to Chapter 6 (the book has 40+ chapters so you won't be missing much) and start again. You should be able to pick up on what is going on fairly quickly and you won't miss out on a really good novel. You can always go back and read the beginning later.
Rating: Summary: This book was incredible!! Review: Well thought-out in plot. Loved the ground assault with the single squad against the Bug army. Realistic characters in every scene, and the political concepts are great. Nicely written with real physics in mind, and the technology is outstanding! Very powerful at times. Could use a little less of the whole numbers thing, we don't need to know just now many fighters are being destroyed by so many missiles and such. THERE NEEDS TO BE A SEQUEL! How is it that the TFN and their allies can be at so many disadvantages and still win? Dave, please get our sequel out to us SOON!
Rating: Summary: Great book, great series - no conclusion Review: When it comes to space wars, this book beats 'em all! The places, people and plot are secondary. The WAR, ship to ship slug-fests, and individual battles rule here. It's pulp, E.E. Doc Smith'ish writing, and a great read! If you like epic space battles that you will never forget, read this book. One warning - The series has no real conclusion! We're left hanging. It's written as if a sequel was planned, but never written - But it's still worth the read!
Rating: Summary: Space opera at its best Review: A great " Boys Own " story reminds me of the comics that were popular during the sixties and seventies Commando and the like. Weber and White have managed to capture the essence of this style,White hat and black hats and very little grey. Enjoyed this book and the other two books these authors have put togeather. would recommend to anyone who likes stories with great battles.
Rating: Summary: Maybe the best space war book ever Review: I loved this book. So far I have read it twice. After many years of reading science fiction (about 45) I often have trouble finding a book that has a new plot or a good twist on the usual. Weber and White have crafted a book that has one battle after another. Their inventiveness is amazining. As with most space war books it is an analog of "old earth" sea battles. And they do it very well. There is little characterization-to do so would have made the book much longer and, I'm sure, slower. As it is, this book is fast paced, entertaining and has me continually looking in the new book lists for more Weber and White.
