Rating: Summary: Star Wars Vector Prime Review: I have always liked Star Wars, but the auther messed up a lot of things in this book. Such as killing Chewbacca. It's like none of the Jedi's realy used the force except to check to see if one of their friends were enjured. And Anikin Solo could have used the force to raise Chewie up into the air and into the falcon. And then like I would be reading one curtain thing then the next chapter. The auther wrote something that had nothing to do with what had happened already or what never really happen. It was like a shock trying to figuer out what your were reading. This is the worse Star Wars book I have ever read. The others are pretty good. And not only that the auther took 2/3 of the book till there was really any thing good happening.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I simply could not put this book down. The action is really fast-paced. I was thankful that this book is finally getting real - no more "can't touch this" heroic stuff where no good guys get killed no matter what horrors they are put through. The Yuuzhan Vong are a fascinating edition to the Star Wars universe; I found their ways accompanied with their odd technological developments creative and interesting. Now that I'm done talking I'm going to begin reading the next book in the series!
Rating: Summary: enjoyable Review: First things first. For those of you who hated the book becasue of the death of a main chraacter, let me say that the last time I checked, the star wars characters aren't immortal. I believe that Salvatore brought to an end a very heroic death for one of the greatest heroes of the New Republic and a great ally to the Star Wars universe. IT'S TIME TO MOVE ON!... That aside, I believe that this book is a great way to start the New Jedi Order series. The whole gang is back and now the Solo children are older and are developing thier own Jedi abilities. Great start to what I believe will be a great series. However, I do believe that the New Jedi Order series is more "adult" and darker, so the whole nature of a happy ending and the good guys always winning may upset some younger readers. In these books, the good guys will not always win and some of the books may not have happy endings. The Yuuzhan Vong are vile hideous creatures with no respect for life and they will no doubt bring some darkness within the books. So if fans are not interested in this sort of thing, better stay clear.
Rating: Summary: enjoyable Review: I have a problem in understanding how a book can be bad just because a main character dies. Just because someone is a main character doesn't make them immortal. So, don't go on the basis of someone dying if you're looking to review this book before you read it. I think that Salvatore did a great job in bringing to an end the life of one of the New Republic's greatest heroes and a beloved character in the Star Wars universe. That aside, the book was well written and a great start to the New Jedi Order Series. The Yuuzhan Vong are hideous creatures who are out to destroy the New Repbulic and especially the Jedi and the Solo children are developing their own Jedi abilities. Great start to what I believe will be a great series of novels.
Rating: Summary: Great Book. A new beginning. Review: This book was fantastic. It had everything. There was a lot of action, some new characters, and many old characters that have grown up. Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin have huge roles in this story and I really liked reading about them. These new villains are great. They are the Yuuhzan Vong. The new technology that they bring into the story is all organic, no machines or droids or blasters. Even the space ships they fly are not machines. Some of it was a little beyond weird but it was very cool. This story had a different feel to it from other Star Wars novels. It is more violent. The bad guys are more deadly and in that way I think it made them a little more realistic. They behaved as warriors would. The Yuuhzan Vong don't play around. They enjoy killing and parts of the book seem like a dark fantasy. In other Star Wars books, like Heir to the Empire, the villain would often not deal the killing blow to a victim, reasoning that his victim will play a larger role in his "grand strategy". So this book was very different. In this book, it is not just the control of the government that the villains want, they enjoy killing. In this book our heros face more danger than they ever have before. Anikan is probably my favorite because he has that sense of over-confidence that teen-agers often have. But it is even more so for him because he is a Jedi Knight. Throughout the story he learns some important lessons though. He learns about the force and he learns about how precious life is. In fact everyone learns, even the reader, that life is not to be taken for granted, not even by heros. Salvatore did a beautiful job writing the scene on Sernpidal, the scene that will leave a scar on Star Wars fans' hearts.
Rating: Summary: Vector Prime Review: This book was one of the best I have ever read. The New Republic is trying hard to survive after Leia steps down as the head of the senate. The Vuuzhan Vong are on the approach into the Universe, and they will not except peace. They have been promised the new galaxy from their so called gods, and take every action to please them. But to every great story there is always something that goes wrong. On the way to save a bunch of refugees from the planet of serpindel(sp) Han , Chewy, and Anakin do what they can to save as many people as they can before the Vong's doval basin pulls the moon down into the planet. As they are loading the Falcon up with refugees, chewy stays on the ground to continue to load. Anakin is at the controls, and Han goes to the landing ramp to help chewy up , and anakin takes off in flight. With no time to spare the moon is pulled down to the planet, and the last we see of our great warrior wookie, is Chewy Standing tall and waving his arms as to say , bring it on. The Vong terrorize the Outer Rim, Not sending any messages, and not willing to negotiate with the New Republic. The Yuuzhan Vong will crush the infidels if it is the last thing they do.
Rating: Summary: Good Beginning to the NJO series Review: As far as the New Jedi Order goes, Vector Prime is a perfect launch point. The story is crisp and compelling. The reader feels great symphathy for the characters, and after the last few Star Wars disasters (the Callista trilogy as I call them Children of the Jedi, Darksaber, Planet of Twilight), Salvatore's springboard book is truly good. The introduction of a foe that can not be sensed in the Force makes the Jedi into mortals again. Kyp Durron is made a viable character, no longer a Luke Skywalker clone. The Solo children take a prominant role in this book, which helps inject new life in the Star Wars book universe. Now we come to the issue of Chewbacca's death. It was and is a brilliant idea and Salvatore's writing at this point is equally brilliant. Chewie's death stirs up the comfort zone that readers sometimes place around characters. Chewie is also not always necessary in every story either (check out the Hand of Thrawn books). Salvatore also sheds new light on the nature of Han and Chewie's relationship, which ultimately makes his death that much more of an emotional hammer blow to the reader. Han's reactions to his children flying into danger are also extremely emotional. Vector Prime is a strong, well-written story, one of the best in the NJO series. The only problem I have with this book is Salvatore's adjective usage which gets increasingly redundant, ie the unshakable Jaina, the devasted Han. Phrases such as these are used too frequently throughout the book, but are Salvatore's writing style as they appear in Salvatore's Attack of the Clones adaption too. I find it a bit distracting, but that is simply a personal opinion.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic book Review: You gotta love when the book is dark and written by R.A. Salvatore. He writes this book as great as he wrote the Dark Elf and Crystal Shard series awhile back.
Rating: Summary: I didn't want to like this book, yet found myself drawn in. Review: R.A. creates a whole new race, and introduces a new technology, or maybe reintroduces us to an old one of symbiotic relationships with living creatures. The death of the major character was NOT Bob's idea, but was strongly suggested by Lucasfilm. So don't hate Bob for making you cry and bawl like a baby when you get to that part. The character dies living it's life the way it was introduced in the books... and that's the part I liked about this. While it IS a sacred cow of sorts, it's not just to generate interest in the book in general. I would hate to think that Bob's book is only remembered for that sad fact. And to the other reviewers that tore the book apart because of some technical difficulties... no other series of books gets everything right. Get over yourselves, and get a life!
Rating: Summary: Classic Salvatore Review: Salvatore moves into the Science Fiction genre after many successful forays into fantasy literature. I must say the transition is seamless. This is a typical edge of your seat thrill ride that can't be put down until it is finished. He also does an amazing job of character development whithout losing the action sequence. If you are a fan of the Star Wars series, or sci fi literature in general, get this book!!
