Rating: Summary: A GREAT BOOK! Review: I *love* this series, and I don't think I can stress that enough. From someone who really hates to read normally, I couldn't put it down. The characters are wonderful, and I really felt a lot for them. It's really not your typical fantasy novel. And it's just a really fun book. I loved it. You have to read it!!
Rating: Summary: An Amazing Book Review: This book was absolutly wonderful. I loved every word. It has been a long while that I have picked up a book that I was totally addicted to but Lynn Flewelling has written a masterpiece. This book has everything in it that a fantasy book needs: evil necromancers, strong and powerful but kindly old wizards, elves, mystery, love, magic, swordfights, secrets, queens, and best of all, the Rhiminee Cat! A MUST read
Rating: Summary: A book that will never grow triersome. Review: This book is a wonderful piece of literature. Among the trite and garish excuses for fantasy one sees today, LUCK IN THE SHADOWS can actually be called a good book. But please, do not try to compare Lynn Flewelling's work with anyone else's. She stands alone. her books do not need to be thrown into a metaphorical barrel with works from authors like Robert Jordan or David Eddings for a dubious recomendation. Even comparison to excellent literature like J. R. R. Tolkien's, or Margret Wiess's, is pointless, because Ms. Flewellings books are nothing like the aforesaid authors' work. Each are good in their own individual way, and they do not benefit from comparison. LUCK IN THE SHADOWS, STALKING DARKNESS, and TRAITOR'S MOON are three wonderful books, by their own quality, and that should be recomendation enough. I look forward to Ms. Flewelling's next book, because I have expectations that she will live up to her own standard.
Rating: Summary: Compelling, unusual, detailed fantasy Review: The blurb makes this book seem like a bog-ordinary fantasy romp. Don't believe it. Flewelling not only has a flair for unusual and fascinating characters, but obvious care for the little details that hold her universe. Nothing is overlooked, from clothing details to local mannerisms and folktales, and this wealth of subtle detail contribute to the unexpected quality of this novel. This aside, it is the characters that really make "Luck in the Shadows" stand out from the pulpy mass that is modern fantasy writing. The only real problem with this book is a slight tendency to throw in didactic speeches obviously addressed to the reader. This put me off somewhat, but it had completely disappeared by page 100 or so, when the compelling plot and characters drew me in and held me until the very end. The second book, by the way, is even better.
Rating: Summary: Stunned Review: My friend recommended this set of books to me, as I am a fantasy aficionado. The world that Lynn Flewelling creates is rich, varied and intricate in its detail. While a little slow in the beginning, Luck in the Shadows quickly brings characters that almost everyone can relate to in some way and which makes them enjoyable. I recommend reading these three books in order and together, so that the impact and suspense is not lost on the reader. Definitely one of my favorite books that I've read in the past year or two. Sarcasm and love, terror, hatred and confusion all combine in a realistic and very enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: Lucky choice Review: I was telling myself that I wasn't going to buy another fantasy book set an a quasi-medival setting again, especially after being mildly disapointed after David Eddings latest effort. However, I did buy this and was very plesently suprised. The plot is engaging and easy to follow, there are not too many characters and these do not have ridiculous names (Robert Jordan, take note) and there are only a small number of jokes (David Eddings take note). Admittedly, it is a bit by-the-numbers but it is very well written and well thought out which makes it very good reading.
Rating: Summary: A light read, good for summer Review: I'll agree with those people that say this book is not a marvoulous work of literature, but I found it to be a fun read and it is a nice, light story. Lets be blunt: you don't need a road map to follow this plot and some of the story telling techniques are terribly simple and over used. However, the story itself is interesting and, despite the stories sometime blatant predictability, it even manages a decent climax. OK, Robert Jordan she isn't, but Lynn Flewelling isn't bad. If you are looking for a good beach book I highly recomend this one. But if intricate plot twists and deep symbolism is what you crave then you should probably look somewhere else.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: Lets see, I started reading this book at 9 one evening, looked up and realized it was 6 the next morning. This book was wonderful! My only suggestion is to pick up the all three books at once, else you'll drive yourself insane waiting for the next books! The characters were wonderful, they seemed alive and the plot has plenty of twists and turns to keep you reading. Honestly these are some of the best books I"ve read, and I've read a lot of books. This book goes right on my shelves next to the Shadow War and Lord of the Rings Series! If you love fantasy, adventure , danger and intrigue you must own this book!
Rating: Summary: Best ever? Hmmmm...Don't think so Review: You can tell it's a first book. The story is engaging, the characters more than 2 dimensional, and the world itself is intriguing. However, the show-don't-tell approach at times and the heavy handed 'lets have two characters suddenly discuss what is going on in the world and no-one will know it's a plot device' wears thin. The amount of whispered conversations they party hear is astounding. Surely there are better ways to incorporate and expose information than blatant slotting it in and hoping nobody notices. And if you aren't being telegraphed most of the plot and seeing through the obvious detours, then you don't read enough fantasy. Yes, it was enjoyable, but it could have been much better. As I said, first book. I'm encouraged enough to read the second, though.
Rating: Summary: The Best of the Best! Review: Amazing! I've read hundreds and hundreds of a fantasy books and I've never found anything quite like Lynn Flewelling's work. Unlike most books, it doesn't fail when you think it will. Everytime things start to go down hill, they go back up again, making for a bumpy and enjoyable ride. Contrary to what some people might say, Flewelling's mix of humor and intrigue and her use of homo- and bi-sexuality is a reassuring sign that some people are becoming more open-minded.
