Summary: A Great Read
Review: When I first started reading this book, I didn't know what to expect. Vector Prime had totally blown me away so I wasn't sure if DT: Onslaught would be able to compare. Well, it didn't, but that's not such a bad thing. This was still a great book. It was just different from Vector Prime.

First of all, Vector Prime really focused on the motivations and politics of the Yuzhan Vong. That's probably what interested me most about it. The Empire had grown boring and repetitive, so it was cool to see another threat be shaped. Dark Tide on the other hand showed the Yuzhan Vong in a different light. THey were cruel and ruthless, showing no mercy. While it was still interesting the relative lack of explanation kind of grated on me. The end of the story helped relieve some of this, though.

The best part about this book for me though was the focus spent on Corran Horn, my favorite Jedi by far. Horn is in fine form here, displaying his CorSec attitude & logic with Jedi insight.

All in all this was a fitting continuation of the New Jedi Order series, which I have enjoyed immensely.

Summary: An incredibly good book
Review: This is a good read for any Star Wars fan. Stackpole's books are both easy and fun to read, and this is no exception. Even if you haven't read Vector Prime, the storyline is easy to understand. An alien species from outside the galaxy called the Yuuzhan Vong (nice name, by the way) have decided to invade the galaxy, and they have caused havoc along the Outer Rim. Most of what happened in VP is explained in the first couple of chapters. And Corran Horn fans, rejoice, because your favorite hero is back! I didn't really notice any problems with this book, but I wouldn't call it perfect. What'll really scare you is on pages 242 and 243. But please read the rest of the book first.

Summary: Really great....and finally more about the Solo kids
Review: This was a really great book. It wasn't the best Star Wars book that I've ever read, but it was far from being the worst. It didn't drag at all like some SW books do. All the Jedi are scattered across on different missions. Mara and Anakin Solo go to Dantoonine so Mara can get some rest and hopefully recover from her strange illness. Corran and Ganner are going to go look for more about the very strange and evil Yuuzhan Vong. Luke and Jacen go to Belkaden, to see what the Yuuzhan Vong agent was trying to create there. Leia is pretty much snubbed by the Senate. And Gavin Darklighter and the rest of the Rouges (Jaina Solo included) lead desperate refugees in a fighting retreat from the Yuuzhan Vong. Eventually, most everyone ends up on Dantooine. It's a great book, and I'm really looking forward to getting the next one. I like reading about the Solo kids, who are finally becoming more interesting. In most of the other books, the kids just get sent away somewhere and you don't hear from them for the rest of the book. Definately not the case with this one. And you get to see more about Luke and Mara's relationship. Definately a plus. Han's not in the book a lot, but that's ok. I didn't really miss him, there's too much other stuff going on.

Summary: Similarities
Review: I liked this book a lot and I thought that it was a good installment in the Expanded Universe. I have read through this book twice and enjoy it greatly. I liked the lightsaber fights the best seeing as they were very much like those in episode 1. I mean we having flying somersault kick/slash... you get the picture. All in all very good indeed

Summary: Action-packed Onslaught is truly dark.
Review: Dark Tide I: Onslaught lives up to it's ominous title from page one onward. The New Republic Senate refuses to believe that the Yuuzhan Vong are a real threat. So Leia takes it upon herself to help evacuate the refugees in the path of the Vong's merciless invasion of the Outer Rim worlds. Anakin Solo accompanies Mara on what is supposed to be a restful vacation for her on peaceful Dantooine, but the two end up having to fight for their lives. Luke and Jacen Solo go to Belkaldan to see what is left of the research facility attacked in the first New Jedi Order book, Vector Prime. Jacen's twin sister Jaina, who is a super pilot in addition to being a Jedi, joins Rogue Squadron (the Solo kids are starting to get really cool now that they're growing up). Corran and Ganner investigate the wherabouts of students on an archealogical dig. And here's where the real action begins. Most everyone ends up on Dantooine, fleeing from the Vong. Now they begin their desperate battle. If they lose, they all die. I loved how this was action packed all the way through, and didn't drag at points like some of the Star Wars books. I'm looking forward to reading Dark Tide II, Ruin.

Summary: Finally some real action from Luke
Review: Ths book is great because Luke and the other Jedi finally fight with the force. I have been so mad in recent books when they make Luke passive and afraid to use the force even for good becasue he might go over to the dark side. I am a little mad about Han however, who blames Anakin the whole book. All and all it's a great book with tons of jedi action. The sequal is also fabulous.

Summary: Vong are a bit hard to get into
Review: Love all the books, though the Vong can be a bit hard to get into. But I really must have missed something (and I'm sure I've got all the books), when did Luke and Mara get married!

Summary: Better than the origonal movies
Review: I must say that I am impressed with the NJO series. I have avidly avoided Star Wars novels over the years because to me each book re-hashes the same plot differently over and over. The only reason I read "Vector Prime" initially, was because I have been a Salvatore fan for many years and have faithfully read all of his books. Well after "Vector Prime" I got hooked and read "Onslaught." I was not dissapointed in the least and am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Who ever spear-headed the NJO series should be commended because it is so awesome to come back to these characters after 20 years and see them respond to a threat totally outside of the dark side of the force and the evil Empire. So far I have enjoyed these books better than I did watching the movies for the first time. I read an interview with Salvatore recently in which he said this thing would be over 20 novels long. I'm so into this thing now - that I'll probably read them all.

"Onslaught" was well written and I'll probably check out some of Stackpole's origonal stuff now. There was a lot of character development and for people like me (who haven't read much star wars) it was a welcome addition. For example - I had no idea who Mara Jade was and that she worked for the emperor at one time. Its also good to see a grown-up Luke Skywalker in action as a master instead of apprentice. I missed Han Solo in this one - but know he'll be back soon.

I did read "Rogue Planet" a few months back and I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of things from that book work its way into the NJO series. In "Rogue" there was mention of a female Jedi named Vergeree who disappeared - and I bet is probably with the Yuuzhan Vong somehow (you'll have to read it to know what I'm talking about). I have a feeling she is going to be the link that Luke needs to re-establish the origonal Jedi Council - not to mention provide the Skywalker's with a fresh perspective of their father - whom she knew before his fall.

Summary: Showing more of the future
Review: I have read nearly all of the star wars novels except the X wing series and the young jedi series. This book would have to be in the top five with I, Jedi and the zahn titles. Althought I like all aspects of star wars, what has always truly excited me was Jedi, and finally that is what we are getting. Luke always seemed to be a difficult character to portray by authors. Some of them even made luke seem weak and almost ordinary to me. This guy could defeat darth vader, but seemed to have trouble dealing with so many other weaker villains. But in this book, he truly acts like a Jedi MASTER. He is truly powerful but still has limits. Also it is great to see other characters becoming competent Jedi as well. The Solo kids can hold their own. I love the way Jacen's character is being developed. He is questioning nearly every aspect of the jedi and the force, but his questions are legit and do deserve some thought. Mara Jade is powerful and in character even through her illness. And it is nice to see some romantic interaction between her and luke-they are married after all. Just because she is such a strong and reserved character doesn't mean she can't show love to her husband and family. Corran Horn is my new favorite character since I, Jedi. It was nice to see him used in a significant way. It is interesting to see the rift growing within the Jedi. Clearly a confrontation between the factions is in the future. Either that or the differences in the groups will be an exploited weakness. For all the readers who complain we dont see enough of han, lando, and others, remember the title of this new storyline: The New Jedi Order. Now that the jedi are once again becoming powerful and numerous, they need to have an enemy. And the Yuuzhan Vong are the epitome of evil. They truly are a worthy opponent. I do think that Leia seemed a bit weak and out of character. And this book was definitely too short.

Summary: Great Book: Better than Rogue Planet
Review: Rogue Planet had an excellent idea: tell what happened between Episode 1 and 2. Unfortunately, nothing very exciting happened for Obi-Wan and his young Padawan. There was very little action and nothing that was very interesting.

But this isn't a review for Greg Bear's novel, it's not even for something he wrote. It's for Dark Tide: Onslaught, an excellent book.

The book begins with action, a lot more than what was in Rogue Planet from cover to cover. I don't know about you, but I like an exciting book to read, and this gives it to you. And unlike Rogue Planet where the characters are mainly Obi-Wan and Anakin, with a brief appearance by Mace Windu for about three pages, Onslaught presents Luke Skywalker, Princess Leai, Han Solo, Mara Jade, Han's kids, and other well known characters from the Star Wars universe.

It takes place far after Return of the Jedi, a time where the New Republic is still fragile and could easily be broken. The Yuuzhan Vong, a threat in Vector Prime, have disappeared, for now, but are still very dangerous. The senate on Courscant doesn't agree, and actually puts down, Princess Leia for even trying to stop them. Instead, the Jedi, led by Luke Skywalker himself, hands out assignments to his Jedi in training, including Jacen Solo and his brother Anakin who still feels responsible for Chewbacca's death in Vector Prime.

The book has a lot of action and hostility, enough to make you say, "I'll just read one more chapter." When you get to the end of that one, the story is even more intense, so you say, "Okay, one more." But yet again, you get wrapped in it until you are either stopped or realize how long you have been reading. That makes me say, "What a great book!"

I'm not cutting down Rogue Planet in any way. It was helpful to read between the first and second movie, and for a Star Wars fan, that's a must. But Onslaught, which is much cheaper due to being in paperback, provides a better story, and is all around a better book. Take my advice and read Onslaught. There's a sequel to it, and it's one of the best Star Wars books I've read, possibly the best after I think about it. But after you're done, check out Rogue Planet. Most will enjoy it, but find Onslaught better.
