Rating: Summary: Plodding through . . . Review: Unlike "The Mist of Avolon" and "The Forest House", I'm having a hard time following this one. I'm typically not a science fiction reader, but I enjoyed "The Mist" so much that I wanted to read everything MZB has ever written. I agree with a previous reviewer who stated that it felt more like reading a series of short stories. The one redeming part? - setting up a link with the preists and allowing us to meet Father Joseph of Aramathia(sp?).
Rating: Summary: A beautiful portrayal of how the mysts fell around avalon Review: LADY OF AVALON links the forest house with the great mysts of avalon. It is sooo very beautifuly written and it makes you care so much for the characters. I give it a higher rating then amazon allows. You'll cry, sigh and rejoice. You'll be so sad when it is over. Worth any price.
Rating: Summary: Simply amazing Review: I loved this book! There were several stories in it but if you were looking, you could see the connection between them. The theory of reincarnation was clearly shown through the generations.
Rating: Summary: Okay but not to the standard of "The Mists of Avalon" Review: The book is okay as fantasy/Arthurian literature goes. However, it is far below the standard set by MZB in "The Mists of Avalon" or "The Firebrand" which are masterpieces of fantasy fiction. A question about historical accuracy: in chapter 7 of part I, set by the author around the year A.D. 106, a character referred to as father Paulus speaks about Augustine and his repentance. To the best of my knowledge St. Augustine was born on A.D. 354. Is Paulus a prophet or our beloved MZB blundered?
Rating: Summary: Not as good as MISTS, but... Review: LADY OF AVALON certainly is no competition for MZBs materpiece MISTS OF AVALON, but nevertheless, it still is a very readable and enjoyable novel with strong characters and strong emotions.I am looking forward to reading her next AVALON novel.
Rating: Summary: Can't touch Mists! Review: Though I eagerly awaited this book, I was sorely disappointed! I was bored. I felt like I read the same story 3 times, and none of the characters had any verve. I agree with much of Ms. Olson's review; the stories lacked characterization, and I questioned much of their behavior. However, I DID find the ritual stuff interesting -- in fact, to my mind, that was the best part of the book. In sum, "Mists" was best, "Forest House" was okay, and "Lady" was the worst of the three. (Thank goodness, I read "Mists" first; otherwise, I would have missed the whole Darkover series, being unimpressed with MZB.)
Rating: Summary: Great book - made me want to research more... Review: I enjoyed this book immensly. It made me want to conduct more reseach into the 3 seperate eras of British history depicted in the text, as well as in Celtic Europe. Thank you for creating this thirst for greater knowledge... Earth Mother...God / Goddess... The search for understanding continues. PW
Rating: Summary: A creative link between Forest House and The Mists of Avalon Review: I applaud this author's ability to create magic inside of history. Marion Zimmer Bradley writes as if she lived in this community of Priests and Priestesses and is simply telling about her memories. Memories which can remind many of us of other times and places, loves lost and loves won. Our lives today no different, wrapped up inside one drama after another and again, loves lost and loves won. I love her style. I love her insight. I love her memories! Thank you for the pleasure of escaping into a world of magic.
Rating: Summary: Not quite like other MZB books.... Review: Okay..I'm sure that most people who read the summary gasped and said," How dare she! It was great!" (Well, some of them, anyways) ;)However, I didn't say that I DIDN'T like it..it's just that I was a bit..dissapointed.Let me just explain myself.First of all, I have to commend Marion Zimmer Bradley for giving the readers some background for what goes on in 'The Mists of Avalon' and continuing what happend in 'The Forest House'.Also, as far as I know, it also seems to be historically accurate. Finally, as some previous reviewers mentioned, it did a good job chroncling(sp?) the reverbratiions that Chirstianity had on it's follower's views towards the Celtic beliefs. You know, first, they weren't quite so fanatic and influential, and then slowly, it start changing the old ways.My only problem with this book is that all three parts were basically the same: the main character introduced, the main character falls in love with someone, and then either the main character or his/her love di
Rating: Summary: Absolutely wonderful, magical and captivating! Review: The Lady of Avalon, as with all of the Avalon series books, is a very captivating book! The writing is of a very high quality. Bradley's writings have kept me in suspense chapter to chapter and book to book. She is one of only two authors (Stephen King being the only other) who I can gladly read all night long, loosing all track of time. I believe Marion Zimmer Bradley to be a very gifted writer. As for the Lady of Avalon, I can't say enough about what a wonderfully detailed, magical book it is. I admire the entire Avalon series for one very specific reason: the detail that ties the three books together. Although The Mists of Avalon was written many years before it's prequel, The Forest House, then Lady of Avalon, all three books refer to people, places, events, and even changes in cultural norms and explain what led up to them and what followed. She gives an interesting account of the spread of Christianity and its impact on the pagan culture of the time. A lot of reasearch was put into this book, although it is a fantasy book, the accuracy of the minor day-to-day details makes it seem as though you are a part of the culture. It is a must to read all three books. Although each book holds its own very well, I recommend all three books to gain a fuller understanding of the characters and events. (Besides, by reading all three books the magic lasts three times as long!) I would also suggest reading the books according to the timeline in the books, not the order they were written. I can't wait for the next! I hope she keeps writing forever! Thank you for this opportunity to praise my favorite author
