Rating: Summary: Could have been better Review: the ideas are good and the characters overall are enjoyable. but i found that the story at times was hard to follow and it does jump around to alot of different characters during the book. this book had alot of potential but i found it just didn't live up to it. the book is a big mix of science and sorcery becoming something like fantasy in space. i'd call it space opera but i don't think it really fits that either. there have been claims that this series is better than asimov's foundation. this is of course ridiculas. the two series have nothing in common. one being hard core sci-fi the other is eye candy. if you want something light to read and don't expect an epic then the deathstalker series is for you. it is light reading and can be very enjoyable if you don't take it to seriously. adventure in the space-lanes.
Rating: Summary: Decent but not great. Review: This book was good enough to keep me interested through the end, and want to read the next in the series...but. Every main character in the book is more than they seem, which isn't bad in itself, but when a fop turns out to be an unbeatable fighter, a drug addict a master planner and killer, with three characters(one immortal) resurface after nearly a millenium...well, it just gets a little repetative. Overall, I recomend it as a decent book that you should read between, say, The Wheel of Time. Speaking of repetative, am I the only one that got tired of seeing "but he was a Deathstalker and the alien/Captain/Wampyr/Gaurd/etc was about to learn what that meant."
Rating: Summary: not worth the money Review: Simon R. Green takes all the pieces of any space opera you have ever read, stirs in more cliches than you would have thought possible, bakes, and writes it all down badly. Whenever he doesn't know what to do next, he adds more aliens, each one alledgedly new and different and yet described so badly that they blend into one another. Descriptions of people are not only reused between books but sometimes reused word for word in the same book! Finally, the characterizations are flat and virtually identical - if it weren't clearly indicated, you'd never know who is talking.Unfortunately, the series just goes downhill from here.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK ROCKS Review: When i picked up this book I thought it was just going to be another sci-fi book but was I wrong . THis book is the best book I have ever read. Everyone who likes to read should read this book .
Rating: Summary: If you don't take it seriously, it's fabulous Review: This is one of those books you read just because. You can't ask for plausability--because it's not there. If you practice a little suspension of belief, it's a whole lot of fun. Full of classically British humor and gore. I had a grand time with Green's originality and complex plot lines. Especially the villians (whome I always cheer for). Grab your sword and wade into the gore, 'cause you'll have one Hell of a good time reading the whole series.
Rating: Summary: Oh Yeah!!! Review: This book is definitely the best Sci-Fi book out there. It has an excellent mixture of evil characters and desperate good guys killing lots of people with swords, disrupters, and occassionally projectile weapons. Espers are a new twist, as well, and the evil rogue AI's of Shub.I strongly recommend other novels of Green's, especially the other Deathstalkers. Keep it up in Deathstalker Destiny, Simon.
Rating: Summary: Better than Asimov's Foundation??? NOT! Review: This story could be fun and exciting if only all that verbage were not in the way. Certain aspects of the story are constantly repeated -- the clones, the espers, the aliens. Yadda, yadda, yadda. I'm up to Chapter Five, I have taken out my machete, and I will slice and slug my way through this book. However, I am interested in reading it, so I am not totally bored. But I won't stay up all night reading on this one. And to Paloose5's review below: this book is not better than Foundation, not by a long shot.
Rating: Summary: simon green makes tom clancy into a sooze fest Review: I started w/Green's Shadows Fall and as an old hippie thought it was too cool. Then I started on the Deathstalker novels. Body count off the charts but hey I cut my teeth on EE Smith's Triplanetry series and he blew up as many PLANETS! This whole series is so far over the top that it works beautifully. Every kind of creature seems to be present in this enviroment(dead invisible computers that talk in Owen Deathstalker's head for one). Just get all the books and read them. The series is too violent to ever be made into a movie but it would be a heck of a ride that would be totally politically incorrect and insulting to all soccer moms. I thought that Robert Jordan's women characters were strong and they are but Green's females like Topaz and Lionstone would scare the stuff out of all of them.
Rating: Summary: Great Book, But Just Some Things. . . Review: This was a great book, in depth and original, and not boring. There are just some things about it. . . For one thing, it's not JUST about Owen Deathstalker, in fact, a lot of the book is NOT about him. It takes the point of view from some other "aristos" or other characters as well, which is ok 'cause these other characters are pretty interesting as well. That's also why the book is so long. There are lots of cool ideas in this book, sort of political, but not bogged down w/it, and the action is a bit graphic too, though not awful. . .if you mind that sort of stuff. Even though it's a pretty long book almost nothing is resolved, which is good in that the story's not over, but heck! you gotta get the other ones! Overall, it's a pretty good book, enough to keep me liking it and reading the next books in the series.
Rating: Summary: better then Asimov's Foundation Review: This book has it all. Space rebellion, esp, clone undergounds, political intriuge, tyranny on the throne, and more backstabbing cutthroats then then you can shack a laser at. A must read for any true sci-fi fan.
