Rating: Summary: Did anyone else realize this was a Tolkien rip off? Review: After reading all the reviews that said this book was great, I felt I had to chime in and mention that even though it was well-written, just about everything from the disappearing charm to the urgent quest was copied from J.R.R. Tolkien's novels. I mean, sure, the hero was a girl, and instead of a ring, it was a message. But just about every plot point was stolen out of the Hobitt or the Lord of the Ring Trilogy. She fought a spider, had a glowing crystal to guide her when all hope failed, etc. etc. It's actually worth a read if you want to see how badly this author mangled up some storylines from Tolkien.
Rating: Summary: Really a 4.5... Review: I don't know if this will be the classic fantasy of the decade, but it is certainly a great read. While I had some hang-ups at the very Lackey-esque bits of the story (what else are you going to call a waystation?), I really enjoyed another story where the horse is a valid, fairly round character. Karigan's flaws make her a very human hero, easy to sympathize with. For being the author's first work, I say 'keep it coming'!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining... Review: I really liked this book. It had a steady but easy pace to it and was captivating. The descriptions were full and it was an easy book to follow. There are some definite Tolkien influences, but written with Britain's originality. Overall this is a great book with a beautiful cover illustration as well.
Rating: Summary: Great read! Review: This is a great book. It does start off a little slow and choppy, but soon dives into the good stuff. No dragons, but plenty of magic and adventure. There are twists and turns in the plot that you may never see coming. I'm thoroughly impressed, and I'm a picky reader. I could barely put it down.
Rating: Summary: Excellent if you're in the mood for escapism Review: An engaging, swift-moving fantasy book that kept me going from beginning to end! Karigan's world isn't epic, on a grand scale, or highly innovative; if you're looking for big wars or stunning philosophical statements, this isn't the book for you. However, if you are in the mood for good old-fashioned escapist fantasy in a world full of deep pasts, magic, and standard heroism tinged with fun magical objects, this is a wonderful book. Karigan is a spunky but realistic heroine, the Green Riders are an original concept, and the plot is clean-cut. Unlike a lot of fantasy books, it seems refreshingly comfortable in its small scope. It doesn't try to use shock value or twisted darkness to lure the reader in, it doesn't tangle itself in complicated pasts, it doesn't try to have any deep god/goddess overtones; it simply tells a good plot and tells it well. The story is very linear (something that most fantasy books aren't, nowadays) with only one main character whose journey we follow: a pleasant break from authors who spend their time trying to be sophisticated and wind up making worlds that are as clumsy as they are large. A definite must-read; I can't wait to buy the sequel as a break from all my philosophical studying!
Rating: Summary: Judging a book by it's cover Review: This book seemed to jump out at me from the bookstore shelf (sorry Amazon). Fantastic reading, great story. I love how the author left the story open for several more books to come. Keep 'em coming Kristen!
Rating: Summary: How do you title a review? Review: How do you title a review? There's nothing that hasn't been used before: 'great'- 'wonderful'- 'wow'- anyway, onto my review. I finished this book in 2 days- what a page turner! the only thing about it that I regretted was that it left so much hanging at the end; fortunately, the sequel cured that! Currently I can't get my hands on a copy of the sequel, and I have so many questions, like, What's going on with Karrigan and Alton? What's up with Zachary- does he love Karrigan? What's going on with Stevic and Laren? Will Karrigan be a Rider or not? (of course we all know what the answer to that will be.) But an author who doesn't leave anything hanging when the book has a sequel will not keep their audience captive. Gotta provide MOTIVATION for those lazy readers out there. Like me. FIVE STARS!!! This was an incredible book.
Rating: Summary: Good fun read Review: A good fun read, had some cliche's some "unbelievable" things but overall a fun new novel drawing from Tolkienisque themes. Dissapointed that the Heroine keeps "not GETTING it" that she has been chosen as A "Green Rider". The charactors are fun though especially the Sister's. Will read next one simply because I own a Bookstore, and will have it in stock and hope it "matures" with Karigan.
Rating: Summary: Horrible Review: Trite, clich'ed, utterly worthless. I wish I had been warned that there was no redeeming value to the book before I purchased it, but I was on vacation and wanted something to read. Do yourself a favor and read the first ten pages before plunking down good money on a badly written, badly conceived book.
Rating: Summary: GREAT Review: I bought the book in the morning and even thou i am a fast reader , i have finished it this evening( it kept my interest). For a First book it is a very good effort and can only think of the great works to come.
