Rating: Summary: Excellent First Book, Bound to Make Waves! Review: I loved this book. Like most people I dont read the first books of many authors, preferrinf to stay with my tried and true, but I read the cover on this one, and BOY am I glad I did.. Britain tells a fast-paced, well written story. True, its pretty obvious who is the good guy and the bad guy, but that just means you get to the good stuff, like the PLOT faster! I also like how, while finishing the current plot, she left it open for the next book.. VERY cool.. left me satisfied and looking forward to the next!
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Thrilling! Definately worth your while Review: I was first unsure about this book. My mom picked it out, and I usually have learned to avoid the novels she chooses for me. But before tossing it away, I read the back cover, and it's a good thing I did, because it was a wonderful read. It was exciting all the way through. The author keeps you interested _without_ the predictable sex all sci-fi/fantasy writers must have now. You definately must read this book, and I am looking forward to a sequel to this stunning first book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent read by a 1st time writer! Review: So what if the characters were predictable? As it happens, I adore this particular combination, and I love strong female roles. This was the perfect book to take the mind off the preceding long dreary work day. This book had the ability to draw me in, make me cheer, and left me wanting more. Please write some more, and QUICKLY!
Rating: Summary: Good reading - no surprises. Review: I liked the Green Rider very much - so much in fact that I read it several times. It is a fast "ride" through a standard fantasy story-line with lots of adventure, fights, and valor. There are many distinct characters, each with well done development. However, to the annoyance of some, the good characters are GOOD and the bad characters are BAD. I classify this book as "entertainment" (not terribly thought provoking) and as PG13.
Rating: Summary: I can't believe I bought the HC. Review: This was the very first time I'd bought the HC of an unknown, and new author. It will be the last time that I do so. This author may or may not turn out to be someone you want to spend your money on, but right now she's not worth it. I'm surprised that the book was even published, but given the poor editing job no one looked that closely at the manuscript any way. She had a pretty good idea but that's about it. Her writing is hackneyed and cliched, there are no surprises here, the bad guys are obviously bad and the good guys are obviously justified in their dislike of them. I can't believe that this is the start of a series, there's nothing that makes me want to continue to follow the characters into another novel. If you want to try some newer authors that did a better job right out of the gate, try JV Jones, or Elizabeth Hayden.
Rating: Summary: An excellent example of what fantasy books SHOULD be Review: I decided to believe the internet rumors that Green Rider was the most underrated book of the year, and I was not dissapointed. After reading fantasy filled with senseless, repeated violence and sex, (*ahem* Terry Goodkind...)this book was refreshing and filled with suspenseful adventure and mysterious uses of magic. Karigan, the main character, is very likeable and is easy to relate to. Kristen Britain has truly put many so-called "brilliant" writers of the genre, like Goodkind and Robert Jordan, to shame with her first novel. This is a must read!
Rating: Summary: I'm glad I waited till it got to the library Review: At first, this looked like a good book, even if the storyline seemed a bit too familiar. It took reading the first few chapters before it hit me what this book reminded me of.
Ever heard of a 'Mary Sue' fanfic? The type where the hero or heroine who is perfect and amazing with wonderful powers who somehow manages to beat everyone even tho he/she's a dumb kid with butter for brains? Well, if not - here's an entire BOOK written in the style.
As a fanfic writer and editor, I come across a lot of the 'Mary Sue' type stories, and most are pitiful! I was amazed this book made it to print. Why? Here's a few examples.
Why do some authors feel that every main character has to be a 'type'? In this book you have Good and Evil, the good guys all on one side, the bad guys on the other, and of course, a few wild cards (there always have to be wildcards that no one expects). It was as if the characters had been picked out of a catalogue.. you already KNEW ahead of time what they were going to say, how they were going to act.. there was no mystery in this story - it was all much too obvious.
The excitement of certain 'high' points of the story was lacking, as well. It was as if the author rushed over the dramatic bits so she could get on with the rest of the story, like telling us how the mist flowed, or how the air smelled or even how it felt when you stepped in something rather unpleasant.
When I finished this book - and it was only because I never put a book down unless it's a REAL stinker - I had the same feeling I get when I've finished reading a run-of-the-mill 'Mary Sue' story.
My final word on this one? If you're bored and there's nothing else to read, then you might, and I stress -might-, enjoy this. Buying it, even at half price - you might regret it. Borrow it from a library if you must inflict this type of blandness on yourself.
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: This was a quick, but delightful read. The plot had a good political twist of Intrigue, the element of magic, good versus vs. evil, and a modest non-accepting hero. Character development was not extremely deep, but after reading some long, gas bags of novelist this was a refreshing change. Britain was Terry Goodkind-like in wrapping up a single tale at the end of the epic, but still leaves a shadow hanging for next time.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I bought this in December, started it, put it down, and then finally picked it up again a few days ago. I do that a lot and always wonder why - I should have finished it right away, but there are too many books and way too little time. Anyway - READ THIS! READ THIS! READ THIS!This is a good story and a fine read. If you still get to enjoy the summer pick up a copy and enjoy. If you are at work, pick up a copy anyway and find the time. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Very highly driven. Review: THE GREEN RIDER is one of those books that just pulls you in and refuses to let you go. The pace in the beginning is very fast and before you even realize it, you are about halfway through the novel. I recommend this book for those who like a fast read and a good plot driven story.
