Summary: Happenstance
Review: I recommend this book only to pre-teens. It's not really bad - it would be an exciting read for a young girl. But it is being marketed as an adult book, and it is not. Many of the events are derivative of other youth classics - especially the Taran Wanderer/High King series of Lloyd Alexander and the Companions of Lackey. The plot moves only by strange things happening out of nowhere. Almost like the author said, "Gee. My heroine is stuck. Let's have a kindy person help her out." This happens at least 5 or 6 times - by the end of the novel I was bored stiff and not too impressed by the heroine.

Summary: A fun read!
Review: Once again it has been proved to me that an attractive cover IS a good judge of a book. I picked this one off the library shelf in a hurry, inside flap unread, because the cover art caught my eye and I was in a rush because my sis is not known for her great patience. I am happy to say that judging the book by the cover, in this case, did me no harm but a lot of good. It was fun reading! The beginning is harmless and light fantasy stuff, entertaining but hardly gripping, yet as the story progresses it picks up pace, and by the second half I was glued to the pages. That tantalizing hint of romance-to-come in the ending makes me very curious to read the sequel. I am also so glad that unlike a lot of other new fantasies, there was no obligatory excessive gore, no droning on and on about the scenery, but still giving you a fine sense of setting, and even better: decency! Thank God! There has been such a prolific amount of sex rampaging through fantasies these days that I've been despairing of ever finding a "nice", slightly romantic fantasy devoid of all that. But enough of my requirements, let me simply say without further ado, that this was a good book with the key word being "promising" and that I was SO disappointed to find that this is the first-and-only book by author Kirsten Britain. Hope she changes that soon!

Summary: This was an exciting book!
Review: Full of adventure, danger, the magical unknown and sparks of romance Green Rider is a terrific read. Karigan, suspended from Selium decided to run home instead of waiting for her father to come and fetch her. The adventure begins when she sees a rider who is almost dead. He made her swear to deliver a message to the King. He tells her to "Beware the Shadow Man". Who is the Shadow Man? She finds out later and tests her powers against him to save her friends' lives and her own. She creates friends and discovers men who want the message she carries, no matter what the cost. What would a message say that was so important that people are willing to kill for it? The only thing is that the end of the book leaves you to wonder about what happens afterward. I hope that Miss Britain decides to write a sequel and that it will be as equally thrilling!

Summary: An amazing read!
Review: Green Rider is a combination of mystery, adventure, the magical unknown of both good and evil along with romance and stages of trouble. Karigan G'ladheon, a merchant's daughter whose adventure begins when suspended from Selium, the school she attended. She runs away, heading for home instead of waiting for her father to come, and promises to deliver a message to the King Zachary when she sees a dying man. He warned her "Beware the shadow man." and from then on the journey begins! Someone is looking for her ... more than looking for her; he wants the message that is meant for the King, no matter what the cost. Even if it means her life. Always in danger she meets different people who encourage her at each part of her dangerous adventure while others mean to do whatever necessary to get their hands on her. The Shadow Man is tracking her, but who is the Shadow Man? By what means does she have to destroy him before he destroys her? Intrigue is the game they play and who will win in the end? I loved reading this book but it makes you wonder what happens after it's finished. I hope that Kristin Britain writes a sequel to Green Rider and think it will be equally as good!

Summary: perfect!
Review: this book was the best work of short fantasy that i read. it had all of the traits of a great epic fantasy with none of the length. Britain did a wonderful job on her debut novel, and i commend her for her work.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: Though I will not say that this book is without similarities to others, in fantasy it is undeniably and increasingly difficult to write even a passage of text without being tainted by other stories. With so many novels out, it is extremely hard to not go near a single factor of another book and yet keep a human-based story that people can easily relate to in feelings and emotion. This story grips the reader with powerful force and will not allow you to stop reading until the tale is finished, and even then leaving you hungry for more. The plot is well thought out with many twists and interesting curiousities, inexorably giving the reader a very good grasp of the magic contained in the fantasy world and yet striving to learn more. I have concluded that it is well worthy of several thorough readings and praise. Out of all people, however, I believe it pleases horse riders the most, leaving one wishing to meet a Green Rider as they ride along an old dusty road with forest lingering upon either side.

Summary: Cliched Rider
Review: Kristen Britain has lots of talent, and I expect great things from her in the future. That said, I cannot recommend her book to anyone who's read more than one other fantasy novel. While her writing style is great, the plot is just a long string of fantasy genre cliches. The setting is a land where magic was once powerful, but now the knowledge is lost. Naturally there's an Old Language no one can read. The protagonist, of course, rediscovers long lost magic and spends most of the book trekking down a road slaying monsters and trying to deny her destiny and go back to her old life. In amidst all the trekking and slaying she runs into the Ancient Powerful Evil antagonist and, exactly as one would expect, somehow manages to defeat him with her raw talent despite his 1000 years of experience with Ancient Powerful Evil Magic. Etc, etc, you get the point.

Summary: Green Rider
Review: Simply put, I liked it. I found it enjoyable to follow the path of a messenger. Yes, it is somewhat sticking to the formula of underdog gets trust upon an adventure and them becomes the hero, but that is a tried and true formula.

I definatly recommend this for persons who don't like to see too much violence or reading about how their favorite characters get killed needlessly, but do like a little suspense.

Summary: Surprise Ending -- I stuck with it long enough to finish it.
Review: I completed reading The Green Rider much to my dismay. The cover art was beautiful and spoke of adventure. I had assumed the book was written for the more mature audience and not those given to pokemon, goosebumps or whatever the fad is for younger readers nowadays.

When Alton the "love interest" has to express bashful anxiety by tugging at his collar and King Zachary acts with pubescent whimsy and less in a kingly manner it is obvious the characters were fleshed out for the purpose of allowing the main character to have some to speak to.

I am not surprised that the book was read in 24-hours by one reader, though I am surprised that this was considered a good reason for purchasing the book.

The only saving grace to the book was the Berry sisters who seemed to be refreshing in their mentoring perspective, but alas their appearance was short.

I found myself saying out loud, "Why did the writer do this, or say this?" I found a lot of the material never added to mileiu, though they had promised to. For example the two tree poacher and Abram Rust, as well as the Anti-Monarchy Society. (I cannot believe that did not get struck out by the editor.)

The suspense never materialized, such as the groundmites and why little terriers would be the terror of them.

I do not believe clear thinking was involved in the development of this book. It appears that there should have been more of an offering than the Reader's Digest condensed version.

Kristen Britain was able to accomplish a great feat in getting published, and I commend her for that, but unless she takes greater care in the art of writing she will never go beyond mediocre. and should curtail her audience to the younger readers.

There is not one Robert Jordan or George R.R. Martin reader who would not be offended by the overly-simplistic writing of Ms. Britain.

To ere is human, to do it twice is folly. Do not put another reader of quality fiction through this again.

I was extremely happy to pick up the Fellowship of the Ring after reading this book. A Tolkien-like classic was promised by the Green Rider's cover. Unfortunately, you cannot judge a book by its cover.
