Rating: Summary: Skip it Review: Wow. I was amazed at how much my friends enjoyed this book. Actually, most of my friends liked the series as a whole more than this one book. I liked the whole series also, but the first book was not even worth reading. As one of my good friends put it, this book was just a set-up for the rest of the sequels. As advice to soon-to-be readers, skip Dragon Wing and start with the book Elven Star, the second book in the series. It was much more entertaining, and didn't even have the same characters as in Dragon Wing, so you will have not missed much.
Rating: Summary: A More Than Decent Book/Series. Review: There are as far as I can see two basic ways one can review this series of books. The first is to treat them as pure escapism, and there's nothing wrong with that. The other is to place these books in perspective of other literature, genre or otherwise. In my opinion, Dragon Wing and follow-ups are excellent escapism but will suffer if compared with the classics of Fantasy. But hey, how much Fantasy can rub shoulders with The Lord of the Rings, to mention but one classic. I read them all at a young age, and I did appreciate them a lot back then. Since that time, however, I have read a whole lot other material and know that while reviewed item(s) are a whole lot of fun they are not the ultimate Fantasy works available. I think that readers new to the Fantasy genre can enjoy Dragon Wing and company a lot. Even if you are well-read in Fantasy and are looking for above mentioned escapism, this series is a good buy. I keep mentioning series because once you start Dragon Wing and like it, there will be no turning back (addictive). Book two and three are very nice, I must add, but each his/her own favorites. So, depends a bit on what sort of read you demand. I settled for *** stars, but ten years ago I would have given ***** stars.
Rating: Summary: Interesting World Review: Weis and Hickman have created a very unique and intriguing world; one in which all the land masses are floating on different planes, and water is scarce on all but the lowest levels. The story is very good, but at times a little confusing and hard to grasp because of the complexity of the world. There are many questions left unanswered which is a little frustrating. The characters are well developed but its very hard to relate to them or really care what is happening to them, which makes it difficult to get into the story at times.
Rating: Summary: What the Dwarf thinks! Review: I think Dragon Wing is a great book, because it keeps on introducing new characters, where when a book sticks with the same 3 or 4 characters then you just get tired of them. The author's style is great and I like how they get real deep in the characters and sometimes have little flash backs of what happened to them when they were younger. Haplo and Hugh, I have to say they are like an unbeatable pair. If they actually trusted each other then they would have no equal. I like it how there's a lot of twists and betrayal and how they thought outside the box.
Rating: Summary: Dragonlance is junk compared to Death Gate. Review: This is truly Weis and Hickman's greatest achievment .It is even better than Dragonlance ,and that is saying something. There is much more intrigue ,much more uncertanity ,much more character description.I was also pleased by there extensive detail in the dwarves ,or Gegs .Barely any authors put that much detail in dwarves ,they usually stick to the elves. But anyway ,here is the plot :The world has been sundered into four realms ,sky ,stone ,fire and water .On Arianus ,Sky realm ,Three things are happening at once :Hugh the assasin is hired against his will to kill a prince .Sinistrad the wizard is planning to conquer Arianus .Limbeck the dwarf has challenged the beliefs of his people and has decided to lead them in regellion against the "Welves ".Any fantasy fan should read this ,and continue the series .I began the second book several days ago and it's even better .
Rating: Summary: Exellent work Review: I was a little hesitant to pick a Weis & Hickman book outside the Dragonlance setting, but to my amazement this book (and the rest) are amazing. They create such an innovative, complex, and interesting new setting, that I could not put the book down. Worth your time if you like fantasy.
Rating: Summary: the cycle Review: Ah, the death gate cycle. I love this series. I'm reviewing dragon wing for the whole series because I believe you should read them all. All seven books make one story. (I have a hard time thinking of a series as individual books). If you like Wies and Hickman, than read these books. I enjoyed them more than dragonlance (did that sound blasphemous?) Any way. These are good books, and I recommend them to any fantasy fan. And don't be discouraged by the slow begining.
Rating: Summary: Worth Reading? You Bet Review: I'm going to keep it short because most of the positive reviews here have said it all... This series is excellent. I *hate* fantasy books. Dragonlance, Lord of the Rings, all that stuff bores the pants off me. I have never really enjoyed books in the elves/knights/wizards/dragons/etc genre. This series is the exception. I picked up the first book and could not put it down. And then I read the following 6 books in the series and couldn't put them down either.
Rating: Summary: Very Complex Idea Taking Fantasy to New Heights... Review: The Earth...Humans have discovered magic (rune magic) and divide into two groups, the Sartan and the Patryns. The Sartan are the 'wise' stereotypical gods, while the Patryns are ruthless and ambitious, although both are still mortal. The Sartan win however, sundering the planet into four different worlds of Air, Fire, Earth, and Water. Also created are the Death Gates, used to travel from one world to another. Their defeated opponents are put into a prison, the Labyrinth, where they are to be closely monitored and so they will be 'rehabilitated' when they get through the maze. The Nexus was built as a haven for the successful Patryns as they prepare to go into one of the four worlds. But this was not meant to be, because the Sartan, with their plans going awry, have abandoned the Patryns and left the magic to go wild and deadly. Xar was the first one to emerge from the Labyrinth into the Nexus and aided others to come through. Eventually, he chose a superior individual, Haplo, to begin the exploration of the four worlds and he wanted to disrupt the Sartans plans by causing havoc on the planets. Haplo went the the world of Air, Arianus, but he crashed his ship and barely survived. He was saved by the Gegs (or dwarves) and began to make rebellion among the people. He met up with the asassin Hugh the Hand, the bumbling chamberlain Alfred, and the young and charming prince named Bane. Although it is soon found out that there are more to these humans (mensch) than they appear, and the prince is the son of a powerful wizard seeking the conquest of the entire world, and Haplo is helpless, for he can't alert the Sartan (although still seemingly non-present) that the Patryns are beginning to escape... Dragon Wing is a fast-paced and thoughtful page turner that will keep you entertained! The world building is awesome and the characters are fabulous! Make sure to read book 2, Elven Star, and the other five in the series.
Rating: Summary: Come on-- Review: You've got to be kidding me. I read this book twice. Once as a teenager, and once as an older man. This is the worst kind of fantasy. To see this book recieving such acclaim on this website shows that Amazon has a definite interest in the success of these authors. This book was entertaining to me as a child, but a complete failure to me as an adult. There is no depth, no character development, practically no plot to this text. This is simply mass production at its best. Give a semi-original name to a type-cast character, place him in a standard situation, and add colorful adjectives to make the story interesting. There is nothing new here. Weiss and Hickman are competent authors of children's fantasy, just keep them out of my section.
