Rating: Summary: There are other evils in Corona besides those of demons. Review: R.A. Salvatore has been a favorite author of mine for a long time, and his "Demon Wars" trilogy reminds me once again why. Elbryan and Pony have grown so much, yet lost so much as well. Defeating the demon-dactyl Bestesbulzibar in the previous book, good friends were lost but yet a terrible evil was vanquished from the world...or so they thought. This novel begins with Elbryan and Pony attempting to aid the people of their world against the various hordes of monsters that were raised by the demon. We fast see though that the demon isn't really dead, just without a body. Well, that is until he invades the mind of the Father Abbot of Abellican Church. The demon has found a new way to ruin the world...using the evils in the souls of the most "holy" men. Things look bleak for our heroes throughout most of the entire book as horrors as terrible as those the demon conjured in the first book happen to people the reader cares about and believes in. However, the reader, like Elbryan and Pony must cling to the belief that by uniting together and facing these evils, light will return to world of Corona. Will it? I like to think so but we'll have to wait to the next book to be sure... This is the second book in this series and as such, really does depend on the first book "The Demon Awakens" to fully appreciate it. So, with that in mind, go out there and read them both. ^_^
Rating: Summary: Thumbs Down! Review: A truly dreadful book. I was amazed at the number of favourable reviews until I noticed that most of them were written by other Del Rey hacks! And if I ever open a tavern, believe me it will NOT be called The Howling Sheila! The Groaning Broad, perhaps?
Rating: Summary: Demon Spirit could have been a contender! Review: After reading Demon Awakens and half of the Demon Spirit I had high aspirations for the book. The entire saga with the Father Abbot was absolutely magnificent. I only wish the other half of the book was as well thought out. The entire episode with Elbryan leading the rogue band really detracted greatly from what I feel was the real story with the Ablican Church. In addition to this, the story doesn't resolve any of major issues brought up in the book in favor of putting them off until the sequel in the hope of selling more books. Sorry, but if I'm going to spend 25 dollars, I'd rather have the book be 200 pages longer and resolve these issues instead of putting them off. Only a half-hearted approval for this one.
Rating: Summary: Excellent read Review: Fast-paced and action-packed. These words describe just about any of Mr. Salvatore's works and are certainly applicable to this, the latest in the Demon Wars saga. Pony and Elbryan continue their work against the machinations of evil and encounter numerous battles along the way. Definitely, read The Demon Awakens, which is the first book in this trilogy, before starting this one. After you finish that you'll be ready for more. Salvatore creates lovable characters with the emotions and tensions of real life personalities and is a master of battle scenes. If you've read the "Drizzt" books, you'll certainly enjoy these stories; Elbryan embraces many of the same qualities as the dark-elf. If you've never read anything by Mr. Salvatore, give this trilogy a try. It's worth the money!
Rating: Summary: Solid Salvatore Review: I am an avid Salvatore fan and I really enjoyed this book, what I thought was not going to happen, since my favourite character from Demon Awakens, Avelyn was dead. I think that Elbryan doesn't have anything that sets him apart from the crowd of "Conans", and he feels like a second rate Drizzt. I like him, I just don't think he is special. I don't like Pony... She is way too Cattibrie for me. I like Catti i just don't like her doppelganger! However, the Jojonah/Church plot is very good, Roger is a good character and I liked the aloofness of the elves.I thought that Andacanavar has a great potential and if he meets Elbryan and /or takes a greater role in this trilogy it will be interesting. What disapoints me is that this could be Salvatores Masterpiece and a medium weight main character is the only thing separinting this work from Dragonlance, Tolkien or Wheel of Time.
Rating: Summary: Great sequal but............. Review: I believe this to be a great book. All books have a flaw or two, though. This book's main flaws were in character actions. The characters made me think of the others as ignorant. Jojonah steal the hematite and leaves. Even De'unerro would have noticed that the stone was not a real hematite when he went for his prized tiger's paw. I would have to say that overall this is a must read for any avid fantasy reader. Now if I could just get my hands on that sequal.........
Rating: Summary: Powerful Gemstones Review: I enjoyed the book The Demon Spirit by R.A. Salvatore because it was very discriptive about the battles. I liked the swords. The sword I liked the most was Elebryan's. The reason I liked his sword the most was because It could cut through anything! Another thing I liked was the jemstones ability to fight with magic. I think that R.A. Salvatore is one of the better fantasy authors.
Rating: Summary: The Demon Should Just Die Review: I have never been able to determine if I'm a huge Salvatore fan or one of his detractors. I love the Drizzt Do'Urden novels (The Dark Elf Trilogy, The Icewind Dale Trilogy), and in my personal opinion he is the most worthy character to ever step out of the trite TSR-Forgotten Realms mythos. Even his cliched companions like the surly, axe-toting dwarf, Bruenor, or the somewhat cowardly but surprising Halfling, Regis, seem to work far better with Salvatore than with any other contemporary fantasists. But Salvatore's other works thus far, namely The Crimson Shadow books and now these Demon Wars novels are seriously lacking in any and everything. Don't mistake me. The Demon Awakens, which proceeds The Demon Spirit, is definitely worth the time of any fantasy fan or Drizzt buff. But that's not to say it's perfect by any means. Still, The Demon Spirit sinks further into the Abyss by a GREAT deal, and I had to FORCE myself to finish this in hopes that the third book, when it came out, would redeem the series anyway (it didn't). These characters are more cardboard than ever. I'm sick of Goblins - think of something ELSE, Mr. Salvatore, to populate your worlds with (Cyclopians were a step in the right direction). I sought and sought and found only a few minor things to keep my bookmark from forever resting at the location when I stopped, frustrated. I'd advise anybody looking into this series to be wary. And, for best results, only read The Demon Awakens and skip The Demon Spirit and The Demon Apostle. There is SO much better stuff out there, even written by Salvatore's own talented hand. He shows us nothing of his skill here.
Rating: Summary: Simply the greatest work of Fantasy to ever be written!! Review: I have read this book, along with the Demon Awakens, and I must say that I am impressed! I am an avid fantasy reader, I have read all the Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, and Tolkien books available, and with Salvatores new Demon series I must say he outshines them all! Being the middle book in the series, this book is was never expected to be better than the first. Most middle books are good when read with the others in the series, but can't stand alone by themselves very well. I must say I was surprised to have read this book and found it to be as good if not better than the original. The ending is the most aggravating part I have ever read in any book though, (and I mean that in a good way) because they leave so much unresolved to fix in the third book, but the third book hasn't been released yet (At least not in my area) so I won't know what happens for the next 3 months. It's driving me insane!! This book will leave you reading till 3am before you realize what time it is! When I read the Demon Awakens I started it and couldn't put it down. I read the book all night long and into the morning until I finished it. It was almost the same thing with The Demon Spirit. Anyone looking for a masterpiece should defenately check this book out! This book is sure to be named a classic!
Rating: Summary: An excellent sequel to an excellent book Review: I just literally finished reading The Demon Spirit about two minutes ago. While I was expecting a good read, I wasn't expecting one quite of this calibre. The description of this book sounded something like that of the first one. The Goblins/Powries are still rampaging, Elbryan & Pony are still fighting, and Markwart (I don't feel right giving him the title of Abbot) is still scheming to get those stones back, and has made not one, but two Brothers Justice. But this book takes entirely different turns from the first one. And it was even darker, which in itself is quite astonishing. (Though not so much so that you are left without hope, even at the end) About the only real complaints I have with this one is the battles. They are well written, in the usual Bob style, but I felt that there were too many, particularly near the beginning of the book. But this is very much a minor complaint in what is otherwise an excellent novel. Arguably, this was the best book thus far in Salvatore's career. (Though I really liked Homeland) And to think that the next book is due out any day now... Congratulations, Bob! Should you return to Vancouver for another booksigning, I shall certainly be there to congratulate you in person.
