Rating: Summary: My favorite of the Pern novels! Review: This book brings together some of the characters that are only mentioned in the other books. You learn about how Robinton became Masterharper and see some of the other characters in a different light. I loved it! Anyone who loves Anne McCaffrey will love this book!
Rating: Summary: Have we all been reading the same book? Review: I was very disppointed in this book. I love the world McCaffrey created, as I love the character of Robinton, but I have to agree with the readers who found situations and characters repetitious from earlier books, who found Robinton just too good to be true, who were annoyed at the introduction of characters and plot points that were never followed up on. We all know McCaffrey can do better, and instead of praising her extravagantly and uncritically, we should encourage her to try just a little harder -- or get a better editor.
Rating: Summary: A spectacular continuation of the Pern saga Review: In this masterpiece of McCaffrey's, the reader is presented with a new tale: the story of Robinton, Masterharper of Pern. Yet the book goes beyond Robinton's exciting and sometimes tragic early life to explain the way Pern was before Fall, and to answer many questions left unexplained by the Dragonrider trilogy. The novel tells of the decline of Benden Weyr and of the devious Fax's ascent to the position of Lord of six holds. It tells the story of F'lar's father and Lessa's family. Dragonflight only just surpasses the Masterharper of Pern in excellency. McCaffrey's newest addition to the dragon series is a must-have for all Pern lovers.
Rating: Summary: Is this the last one in the series? I hope not!! Review: This book is great, but is best enjoyed when you have read all of the "Dragonriders of Pern" series in order. Start today! I would love to read an adult version of Menolly's life, since the three books devoted to her are geared to juvenile readers...For lovers of this series, you can never get enough of Pern! Also, in particular, I really appreciate Ms. McCaffrey's incorporation of Irish names and Celtic lore/clothing styles into these stories...if you can get ahold of The Dragonlovers Guide to Pern(with Jody Lynn Nye), you will understand! Classic stories to be enjoyed over and over!
Rating: Summary: Good book Review: I've always liked the MH. I kept waiting for a book of his own. I really liked this book. It was interesting to meet people of the past who were linked to the future (F'lon) and younger versions of F'lar, F'nor, and Lessa. I also liked hearing Robinton's past.
Rating: Summary: If you only read one Pern book ever read this one!! Review: I love this book because it tells of Robinton's childhood. Robinton is definitly my favorite character in all the series. The best Pern books are about the Harper Hall, and this one tells of my favorite harper of all.
Rating: Summary: Another McCaffrey masterpiece Review: I found this book to be very well written. I had always wondered how Robinton had become Masterharper and how he became acquainted with F'lar and F'lon. In this book I learned this and much more. As in who his mother was and if he was ever married and what led up to his position as Masterharper. I also learned how he had been as a boy and how he tried so hard for his father's attention. But just as long as McCaffrey keeps writing I'll keep reading.
Rating: Summary: What an ode to such a great man in Pernese history! Review: After having been turned on to the Dragonriders of Pern saga during the Gulf war, I have waited anxiously for every one of Ms. McCaffrey's continuing stories of Pern. I must say that this book just continues my fascination with the whole saga. I understand so much more about Robinton than I ever thought I would. It opened my eyes to just how much this man wants the society of Pern to thrive and why he feels and does the things he does in later stories. I anxiously await the next wonderful story.
Rating: Summary: The Greatest Pern book Yet Review: Until I read this book I was never curious about Robinton or the Harper Hall. This book was helpful in explaining many things about the later books. I was always curious about F'lar and F'nor's parents, impression, etc. Anne McCaffrey does a wonderful job of interlacing the storylines in all her books. I just love her style of writing. She made me cry at all the trajedies in his life, but still made me smile at the 'good parts' This is without a doubt the best book she's written. I couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: What has happened to Pern?? Review: I've been an Anne McCaffrey fan for years. I love Helva and adore DragonRider and DragonQuest. After a lapse of about 15 years I've just read the those two again, and have started to read some of the Dragon rider books on I'd missed on the way. This book is not up the the standard of the first two and has a number of inconsisitancies. Am I one of the few people that thought Robinton was just *too* perfect? I'm surprised he wasn't walking on water by the end of the book. I found the time frame very confusing. I thought they were off by anywhere from 10/15 years in retrofitting the story. A number of secondary characters were introduced and then just vanish from the story without having any impact on the plot or Robinton. There are no events of real importance (other than an emotionally distance father) that take place during almost the first half of the book. Those years could have probably been summed up in a page or two and the story could have begun with Robinton's marriage. But the one inconsistancy that just shouts to be noticed is Robinton's ability to speak with the dragons. All through MH he is able to communicate with many of them. It's not a secret, as a matter of fact, it's one of the things that make him very desirable as the next Master Haper. BUT in DragonQuest, there is that one scene near the end of the book where Robinton has just gotten off a dragon, thinks something about how nice this method of travel is and is clearly startled by the voice in his head that says "the Harper has only to ask". He should have known this was a dragon. I'm sorry to say I was very dissapointed with this book.
