Summary: Great Read!
Review: The whole series is a very original concept. Takes a while to really understand what is going on though.

Summary: Awe inspiring!
Review: This book is by far the best of the series. The journals describing the exodus of the Prince's people was absolutely heart wrenching. I have found very few books that merit tears, yet this unbelievably magnificent book was well worth it. I am immensely grateful to the authors for weaving such a fantastic tale and look forward to more of this caliber in the future.

Summary: Eek!
Review: This book is extraordinarily grim--the other books in the series have dark elements, but this is by far the most uncompromisingly bleak. However, that doesn't make it any less of a book--Abaraach, as with all of the septet's worlds, is vivdly imagined, and the interaction between Haplo and Alfred is very well-done and interesting.

Summary: Touching Describes it Best
Review: This book is raw emotion put to words. The growing friendship between Haplo and Alfred, the fate of the Abbarach Sartan, their lapse into Necromancy, the brush with the higher power in the sacred chamber. It's definitely of quality, and was my favorite book in this excellent series. I said once that this series bested Tolkein's. I was wrong. They're not comparable. They're two different entities, each glorious in its own right, in its own special way. So buy the bloody book already, or I'll gut you like the son of a goat you are! Well, not really.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: The best of a flawed series
Review: This book really surprised me. The authors for the first time consistently maintain real tension throughout the entire work. The dialogue is not as stilted as in the previous book (Elven Star), and the story is far more interesting. It was because of this book that I continued reading the series, which unfortunately never again succeeds as well as Fire Sea.

Summary: The Death Gate Cycle gets better...
Review: This book renewed my faith in the Weis/Hickman team. I read the first two books of Death Gate and was disapointed. I picked up Firesea out of curiosity. But it was a lot better than the first two. Somehow, the characters seem more real. It's also funny to see how Haplo won't admit he likes Alfred, who's supposed to be his enemy. Alfred's search for meaning is made funnier by the fact that he's growing a spine through necessity. The plot was well thought-out, and chilling in some places. Of course, in others I had to stop and laugh for a while. The origin of the Sartan and Patryn is ironic, because the mensch they hold in disdain are what they came from. I ended up worried about the lazar, and how their war will turn out. At the end, it left me wondering very hard about what was going to happen in the next one.

Summary: Incredibly intense and sad
Review: This book, by far is my favorite in the Death Gate Cycle. I also have this one on Audiobook and listen to it frequently. (My favorite characters were Jonathan and the Prince). I am not really sure why this one is my favorite, I guess you just have to read it to find out. I also have to say that I wasn't too impressed with Elven Star or Serpent Mage, but the series overall well deserves a rating of 10. A tip to all Weis/Hickman fans: The first book (Dragon Wing)is also on Audiobook and is read by Tracy Hickman himself!!!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: OUTSTANDING!!!!
Review: This is probably the best series of books I have ever read (I haven't read Tolkien yet. I KNOW, I'm sorry!). I just cannot say enough good things about this book series. I literally read it 3 times through, and each time I can relate to a different character and come to see it from their perspective.

The way that Tracy and Margaret bring the characters to life significantly contributes to the reason this series of books is so great. By the end of the 1st book, Hugh the Hand (Best Assassin in the world), Alfred(Sartan Mage), Haplo(Patryn Mage), Bane(son of most powerful human mage alive), and the rest of the characters have almost come to life in your mind.

If you're going to read Fantasy(Or SciFi) start with this! The sense of depth these books have to them makes you wonder if it's actually historical fiction that Margaret and Tracy are writing about and the index each book has is absolutely amazing. Whenever you're confused about something the characters are making reference to (or if you 'missed' [skipped, lol] the part when the character's were discussing it) you can simply look it up in the back index and you'll understand it better than you would have just reading straight through. (THEY EVEN HAVE DIAGRAMS OF EVERYTHING!)

Margaret and Tracy together are unparalleled writers equal to only a few such as Tolkien, Piers Anthony, Knaak, Louis Lamour(SP?) and the like.

I won't be suprised when this series becomes the next movie series. Except for the fact that since the book's environs are so diverse (they 'literally' create whole worlds with flora and fauna and a whole system of language [actually I think it might be latin]) the movie industry right now might not be up to it.

Finally, if you're worried about it being too advanced or too intellectual, don't. The characters are incredably deep, but like real people, are revealed to you slowly through the actions they take and throughout the series, so you're not overwhelmed all at once.

All the books are great, and I will read the series a 4th, 5th, and maybe a 6th time. Although one of the middle books does drag a little because it's mostly about the humans, dwarves, and elves (Mensch: Patryn/Sartan(Magus) word for humans, dwarves, and elves or anyone else who doesn't live thousands of years).

Summary: I'll keep this brief. . .
Review: This was a great fantasy read, and a must for any fan of the DEATH GATE CYCLE. This world becomes extremely important in the last three novels of the series, so don't miss it. It is a great book, though alot more morbid than previous books by the same authors. It has a quick pace, but not as quick as book 2, ELVEN STAR. The only reason I gave this book a 9 instead of a 10 is because I enjoyed the first and second more than this one because their plots were quicker and more intricate. But this is still a book that you must buy
