Summary: Great book
Review: A little long but fabulous. When I shut the book I just thought to myself...can the next one live up to it?

Amazing story. The author was able to tell several stories at once which was very impressive. We now have to add another Solo to the pile of the dead...

I recommend this book to all Star Wars fans. The story was excellent and it is very well written. This incredibly long book is easier to get through that you would think.

Fey'lya's final sacrifice was a bit out of character, but good.

Summary: A great book
Review: I thought that Star by Star was one of the best new jedi order books I've read. It always ticks me off when stories are unreal with all the main characters surving against huge odds. It would have been unbelivable if all the Solos and Skywalkers and everyone else we've come to love survived this threat.
Denning is an excellent author, making the story convincing. I cryed my eyes out when Anakin died and even more so at his parent's response. Read this book.

Summary: Great book...Bittersweet ending!
Review: Troy Denning needs to write more Star Wars novels! I have been a fan of Troy Denning for a long time and have read all of his great works set in the Forgotten Realms fantasy setting. Star By Star is an exceptional story and a great read. I did not want to put this book down. I really enjoy all of the characters and how Denning establishes the plot and builds the action throughout the story, eventually leading up to a truly memorable climax. The ending is, however, bittersweet. But readers must remember that in war even heroes fall, and their deaths turn them into legends!

Summary: Troy Denning is demented!
Review: Who would like it if a character that has been our protégé for the last 8 books does his last hurrah and get killed, I mean what is the fun in that. I hate it. And unfortunately it happens in the new Star Wars book, Star By Star, written by the demented Troy Denning. The death is ten times worse then Chewwie's, because he is courageous, loyal, a great character and ......Anakin Solo. This is Star Wars for crying out loud! Since when has the main (young) hero died. The only death I find acceptable (or for me rejoicable) is the crafty chief of state Borsk Fey'Leya demise in the fall of Coruscant to Tsavong Lah's mighty Vong forces (yes the Vong do take Coruscant). Also the Jedi Knights (including these new cool Barabel Jedi) lead a mission against the newly created Jedi-hunting Voxin (Those who know of & like the Centaur Lusa will be not happy to hear she dies because of them) at Myrkr. There everything goes wrong. Anakin dies there, which pushes Jaina into the darkside, Jacen is captured by the mysterious advisor to Tsavong Lah, Vergere, Jedi such as Rayner Thul get killed or captured, at least people such as Zekk, Tenel Ka, Lowbacca (though he loses his droid Em-Teede), Ganner and Tahari make it out alive. After I finished it I wondered : How can the New Jedi Order survive after its writer killed its best hope? and : How could Troy Denning do this? He is a great writer, but he just shattered a great series. I recommend this to any one who is an avid reader of The New Jedi Order series, though I have no love for it.

Summary: Great author who didn't bother to read previous books.
Review: Really, the author of this book is a talented writer. But he made the worst mistake possible when he wrote this book. He didn't bother reading the previous books in this series. I mean, why did the other writers in the series build up a certain character so much if this guy was just going to kill the character off. I almost quit the series right there. I really can't recomend this book to fans. You're just setting yourself up for pain, and dissapointment. A perfect example of a writer going over to the dark side.

Summary: The Death of Hope
Review: Until now, this galaxy of fantasy has lived on as only dreams can. Hero's living on until they fade gracefully. Even such characters as Admiral Ackbar have done nothing but exit the stage gracefully. But now reality has presented itself to our story and taken us from myth to near believable scopes.
This is a riveting story that demands your attention from begining to end. The question of who lives and who dies rewrites possibilites for stories to come. You would think George himself dictated this novel.

Summary: A powerful book likely to be either loved or hated
Review: This is one of the most powerful books in the New Jedi Order series, not least of all because of the major twists it introduces to the series' plot arc. As a result, readers are sure to be torn as to whether to love or hate it. Star by Star does start slowly, and some apparent errors occur in the opening chapters (Jaina's status with Rogue Squadron is altered from the last book, for example). The scenes with the adult characters are often slow throughout the book, and in some places Denning insufficiently explains events, leaving the reader wondering how the story got from point A to point B. These are my only trifles with Denning's writing. His character development is good and he manages to breathe life into a number of the rather flat Jedi from Kevin J. Anderson's young readers' series. He also creates an exciting new group of characters--the Barabels, whom we meet in the e-book Recovery (included in the paperback). In addition, Denning writes excellent action scenes. Every chapter about the mission of the young Jedi is a page-turner. This is a blessing in a 600+ page book. On the whole, I think Denning is one of the most skilled writers in the Star Wars franchise.

In part because Denning writes so well, some of the plot is hard to swallow--bad things happen, and Denning emotionally involves the reader in them. Despite the book being a page-turner, I had to read it slowly because I found that the only way for me to deal with how upsetting the events in it were was to take them in small doses. At one point I even wished I could un-read what I had read because it was so depressing. Star Wars fans who prefer to see the franchise's characters cleverly work their way out of tough situations will really dislike this book. However, I appreciated both the realism of what happened here, and Denning's ability to involve me in it. I have read too many Star Wars books that have made me roll my eyes at supposedly significant events and that have left me emotionally indifferent, so I give kudos to Denning for doing just the opposite. Star by Star is a difficult read, but it's worth the trouble.

Summary: Unpleasant gift to long time the fans.
Review: Long time fans have stayed with the SW EU because it was fun to read. The new bosses have lead those fans down a dark alley, then ambushed and killed the heir apparent to Luke Skywalker.

Summary: I HAD A BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS SERIES!
Review: Now that I have read all the books up to SBS once and listen to the audio versions at least twice, I feel my Vector Prime review was right on. The new bosses sold Lucas an interesting concept, but they executed it with way to much darkness and gore. Tom clancey takes his characters into deep PooDoo for a couple hundred pages. These people took usinto the poodoo for a couple thousand pages, then kill the heir apparent and hero in grooming.

There is no question that after a string of really bad books, largely running on the SW time line from year 12 to 16, something had to change. The concept of an invasion from outside the galaxy to provide a new enemy was a great idea. But if you're going to create a new darkness and dread in the SW universe, killing Chewy and Anakin is to much overkill.

Clearly among some this darkness and gore was well received. Among the hundreds of reviews of this book there are a lot of 1 star reviews and a lot of 5 star reviews. Based on my experience in the SW EU chat rooms, the older fan tended to hate to the new direction, but not exclusively. Frank McI., a reviewer I respect liked the new direction a lot more than I.

A common complaint in the reviews I have read is that the author and editors didn't understand the force and the abilities of Luke and Mara as they had evolved. For fans of Luke and Mara this was a problem. Often the author was instructed to include Luke and Mara in the book but had to write Luke out of the important plot lines, because he and Mara are a team that is extremely powerful.

Star Wars is sci fi fantasy where continuity has been maintained. I visit the SW universe (re reading sw books) for escape, not to have my favorite characters killed. It just did not seem necessary to remove the fun from SW over a span of so many books.

Summary: Not too bad
Review: Star by Star focuses on the young Jedi as they start off on their own mission which has the potential to save all the jedi from the unending threat of the voxyn...the book starts a bit slow as they plan their mission but it gets pretty good once they reach vong space. An overall enjoyable read it does gat a little bit depressing and the cliff-hanger style ending leaves you yearning for the next book. Most the characters were written very well except Tahiri who suddenly became extraordinarily jealous and clingy. I was very tired of her and started hoping they would just leave her behind. Anyway, except for her the book was very good albeit sad. I would definitely recommend it for any Star Wars fan.
