Summary: A very good read
Review: Been expecting this novel for a while and it was definetely worth the wait. Unlike the previous hardcover, Balance Poit, in Star by Star our characters are moving around several locations.

Luke is finally organizing an active resistance against the Yuuzhan Vong. There are some pretty cool space battles in which he is involved. Mara fights by his side. Han and Leia are acting now as a team aboard the Falcon. Han is back to his former self. The Solo kids have a mayor role in the book. As well as former characters from the YJK, well it is the New Jedi Order right? Lando appears doing some important things.

Although, I wasn't that happy with the death of a mayor character; it is so well done, the way this character goes... well it reminds me of a phrase "blaze of glory". And it is a war. One thing about the NJO, is that the characters are no longer invincible as they were in former novels.

The battles above and in Coruscant are gripping, once you start you won't be able to put the book aside until you read all of it.

I do indeed recommend this novel.

Summary: Stat by Star: The New Jedi Order
Review: I would like to start out by saying that whoever brought
troy D. into the starwars universe made a big mistake.
I have been reading the novels for over 10 years now
and I am sick of all these outside authers comming in
saying that they love starwars then screwing up the works.
troy denning. is no different and it shows. The man has
never done a starwars novel before. The name of the game
is sciencefiction Key word hear is FICTION!!!!
the main charector's don't get killed. I don't have

to tell you people who I'm talking about. I finished
the last 20 pages of the book half hearted.
I feel troy denning did a discredit to the starwars universe
and should stick with what he knows. But it is not all
his fualt you must understand. because it just isn't one
person writting the book, when in fact it's a colaberation
between many aurthers to put the book togeather and
most of them are veterens of starwars. They are the ones
to blame most of all for letting this poor excuse for a
starwars novel to slip threw the cracks.

Summary: Good book, annoying series
Review: I like the book, a lot. everything they've done with the whole series is great, but looooooong. I've been reading it since the beginning and now i'm just getting tired of it. nothing ever really happens. after about 2 books the yuuzhan vong dominated and stayed that way. if they just ended it i'd be happy.
its not dynamic in anyway, other than that they keep killing characters off. i got over the lack of chewie (in my opinon the best star wars character) simply because i recognize the attempt and need to provoke an emotional response.
Maybe if it wasn't such a one-sided conflict i would be satisfied, but it isn't.
I still suggest reading it though. it's well written and much more emotionally provoking than most star wars series. just long. i can't quite stress that point enough. maybe im just not patient enough. i will continue reading, but this is a series not for the impatient.

Summary: Geez people...get over it....
Review: C'mon people...the good guys don't always win. Dosen't it seem a bit absurd that while the bit-players are falling likes flies, our heroes ALWAYS come out unhurt? This realism (even the good guys can die!) is what makes the Star Wars books so much better than Star Trek! You know the crew of the Enterprise is going to come home (minus a few nameless red-shirts)but the SW cast is vulnerable. I was shocked and saddened by Anakin's death as much the rest of you, but that reflection of real life is what makes Star by Star one of the best SW:NJO books to date!

Summary: It'll Blow you away!
Review: This book is absolutely amazing. If you thought Balance point was good, get a load of this. I can't get out of my head how aborbing and exciting it was! You must read this book. I'd give it ten stars out of five if I could! Buy it NOW!

Summary: Outstandingly Disturbing
Review: This book reminds me of The Empire Strikes back mulptiplied by 1000. Like ESB, it is the center of a series and is used as the glue to keep readers involved and interested in the whole story arc. I was starting to get bored with the series with the last two books, the Edge of Victory Duology, but Star by Star totally gave me my interest back.

Troy Denning's work has now replaced Timothy Zahn's works(Thrawn series) as my favorite Star Wars novel. I thought that was impossible, and I totally didn't think that it would happen in the New Jedi Order Series but it did. Denning provided that much needed glue that ESB gave in the classic films, aslo providing the darkness that manifested itself in that movie, but seriously magnified to the point where you actually CARE about the characters that you are reading about.

Yes one main character died, but it was done brilliantly, valiantly. I reread that chapter so many times just because of the way Troy phrased each word so carefully to totally make the most of the character's death. I knew his death was not in vain. Surprisingly though, I had a harder time coming to terms with another character's death, a minor one really, but one that has been in the expanded universe longer than the previously stated main character. In both cases, I loved the way it all worked out. I know the minor character isn't well liked by many people and readers must have rejoiced at his passing, but it was almost...noble...but futile...in a way that sort of vindicated all the bad things he had ever done.

Which also surprised me is the possible Palpatinesque, lightning hurling future of another main character which is left open for future novel to explore.

The novel has very few flaws and many strong points, most of which came from the new and inventive techniques that the Jedi start to use which provide a large change in the way they fought previously. The Jedi actually become more active in the war effort where they were more observeres in the previous books. Jedi battle are aplenty which is just great! Even though the story is dark there is a lot of humor coming from some new characters: the Jedi Barabel hatchlings that crack inside jokes among themselves which leads to bouts of uncontrollable sissing from them and involuntary laughing from me. It's definately a must read!

Summary: Little rewards, high costs
Review: Okay, the first thing I would like to desperately clear up is this continuous thrashing of Troy Denning. Denning is an assigned writer for the Star Wars universe--He Has No Say What-so-ever As To Who Will Die! Stop crucifying the poor man; he didn't kill the main character, (who I will not name, although you probably already know who I'm talking about), the editors and other team members did.

Sorry, had to say it. On with the review.

This has got to be the darkest Star Wars novel to ever hit the bookstore. Detailed, (sometimes too much so), in gore and agony, it certainly brings a fresh, chilling view to the SW universe. If you can take the heat, read this book. If you cry easily, just read the spoilers and wait till the next book comes out.

Every character in this novel was played out in spendid form. I don't believe there is one that disappointed me. Kyp finally gets a bit of a talk-down. You get to see through the eyes of Borsk Fe'lya, (pardon spelling), and are pleasantly surprised. The Skywalker and Solo family are finally shown as human, (including Luke, which is a real shock), and the Jedi finally start to fight their way back up.

Unfortunately, the price paid is not really what I had in mind. The biggest flaw, (or triumph), in this story is the death of one of its main characters. If this death is final, (which I don't think it is), then it was the worst plot move in the entire series. However, for this character's fanatics, I just want to say that I've been studying the written word for some time now, and never have I seen a developing character such as this die in the center of a story. Hardcover or otherwise.

Many people have compared this with the death of Chewbacca. Bad move. Not only was Chewie a side character, (whether or not he was in the movies), he was also completely developed and over 200 years old. The main character that dies, (careful, tiny spoiler), is young and not near his/her potential. This character is constantly questioning what he/she does, is insecure and not the strong defender he/she is destined to be. There are too many loose ends that are not knotted here.

Personally speaking, I think this character will be back next hardcover, but with a completely different persona and a new hope to the rest of the series. You remember Luke from ANH and ESB, right? Look at him from ROTJ and so forth. Of course, I'm just speculating with an overstated form of optimism. Pardon me.

Hope this review was helpful. If so or if not, please give me the feedback at the bottom of this review. However, don't threaten to kill me as so many have poor Mr. Dennings. Thank you! :)

Summary: The dreariest of an increasingly dreary series
Review: "Star by Star" is the dreariest of an increasingly dreary series that shows no sign of concluding anytime soon. The Vong advance steadily and relentlessly as they have in every other novel. As in the earlier books, nothing the familiar Star Wars characters do seems to make a difference in the overall conquest of the galaxy.

In addition, this book seems to have been rushed into print, as if the author had written scenes and never got a chance to go back and write the transitions that were intended to link them to each other and to the main plotline. Major characters abruptly change location and time seems to pass at different rates for different groups -- days seems to pass for the New Republic plotline while only hours pass for Jedi involved in a running gun battle that occupies a third of the novel.

Summary: Think About It
Review: This death made sense. Think about it....Ben Skywalker. Anakin was going to be the next Jedi that saves the galaxy, now it will be Luke's son. Plus, the removal of some characters is necessary. The same people always being saved and saving the galaxy is stale. New faces are needed. Plus, people dying makes the epic battle of good vs. evil more believable. GOOD DOES NOT ALWAYS WIN. People die. Even in Star Wars.
