Summary: Suspenseful, Action Packed, but Looooong.
Review: I really enjoyed this book. In fact, I have enjoyed the whole new series so far. Some say that the "story" is long because it is 10 or 12 books old at this point, but that's understandable since it's not a story at all. It's a series.

Before the New Jedi Order series, there were growing complaints about the tired old empire finding yet another superweapon and making yet another desperate grab for power. That era is gone. The Yuzhan Vong are the new enemy and they won't be going anywhere as long as people buy this series. Since the Empire books sold for 20 years, I guess we can give this series a chance.

Things I liked about this book: Anakin's growing power and influence, Jaina's ended patience with passifism, Leia finally deciding to be a jedi and stop dabbling with it, and LANDO'S DROIDS!

Things I didn't like: Practically needless death of a major character. Voxen are almost unbeatable at books beginning but dropping like flies by the end. Jacen's constant bellyaching over violence (I don't like darkside over-worrying even in the context of the story. Darkside fear is waaay overdone). Book is over 600 pages. Lando's battle droids get taken out too quickly. Several jedi fall victim to jedi mind tricks (I thought it only worked on the weak-minded. Too many Star Wars authors forget that little detail).

Overall I can definitely recommend this book despite its flaws. Enjoy.

Summary: Action,action and more action!
Review: Yes it is action packed, and very dark but great as well. The Vong are ruthless and if they are to be defeated a great price must be paid. Some fans might not like the dark tones this series has adapted but I for one love it. Its about time the jedi met a foe that wasn't easily killed offf with one blow from their lightsaber. I do however have a minor complaint; having purchased the audiobook version I believe it was a tad too abridged this time round. Abridging a 200 or 300 page book is okay but a large book such as this and with a slue of characters, well I am sure there were sub-plots which I did not find out about. Yes,as always, the main story was there and music and funky sound effects but I think they should have included a little more. The reader did a good job and as every other fan,I can't wait for the next one to come outt. Personally,I would like to see the series get even a little darker before the final turning point comes; but lets spare the solos for a time. Highly recommended.

Summary: Great book!!
Review: I just finished reading this, and i'm REALLY hooked now!!..i cant wait for Dark Journey to come out because this one's kinda a cliffhanger..it leaves lots of problems developing, but it's awesome..i deffinetly recommend this book. One of the character dies, but it's done nicely, altough i was sad for a bit..LOL..it's great and i give it a 10!!!

Summary: Another Great book
Review: This book was great. This is another battle against evil. I was surprised in this book by some of the people who died. I think there may be more information coming on this but I can not wait for the next book.

Summary: Can it get much worse?
Review: Star by Star is an interesting book, definitely one of the better books of the NJO series, which continues to violate the Star Wars plot.
The book is well written, Denning is a good author, and the plot is well constructed. The characterisations are excellent, some light is shone on some characters we rarely see or hear, and the normal characters(the remaining ones) are also done well.
However, I can't get over this whole NJO series, it's been nothing but death and destruction. I mean, haven't these characters suffered enough over the past two decades in the SW timeline? Particularly the Solo family, and in this book it just gets worse, with the loss of another major character and the loss of a major planet.
If you like the NJO series, buy this book, it's fairly pivotal and gives a good indication of how the story will end.
On a more personal note, I now refuse to buy the NJO books, and rely on plot synopsis and skim reading in bookshops for the story. As far as I'm concerned, the whole NJO series has violated the Star Wars story, and I can't believe George Lucas would let this happen, it's ridiculous.

Summary: My Children Cried Themselves to Sleep over Anakin's Death
Review: If you've grown to love the Solo children, then don't buy this book. Anakin is killed. This is particularly hard on young readers. There is no excuse or rationalization for developing readers' love for a character over many books and then killing him off. Anyone who wants real life misery and death can volunteer at the local hospital emergency department. My children never want to see another Star Wars book.

Summary: Bring back Bantam and kick out Lucasfilm/Delrey
Review: George Lucas said he made Star Wars because we had no heros-all the money the Star Wars Universe has brought in made him forget I guess when he signed off on this series. DelRey looks down their nose at us fans (and in their interviews in Insider) and these (my fellow reviewers are lapping it up). Well, I would prefer live heroes myself and how long is the series going to last? At least with Bantam you didn't have to wait through more than 3 novels to see how it ends. Reminds me of some movies(like"Freddy's back")-excessive- over & over & over again. They should of just blew up everyone at one time - it would have been a lot easier to take. I'm not spending the money/nor are the books in my bookcase.

Summary: ??? is he dead???? im not so sure......
Review: In this story a character dies....or does he......the way i see it the auther,TROY DENNING, left it open.....what was that "husk" his body was in. The vong are experts at biology could that husk thing saved him somehow.....i dont know. In the star wars universe anythings posible.

Summary: Simply Unbelievable
Review: This was by far, the most shocking book I've ever read in the Star Wars Universe. By killing <blank>, the face of this series has been changed forever. It was even more shocking that when Chewbacca was killed (yes, Chewbacca's death was unbearable, but someone from the movies had to go sometime. They all couldn't live forever). The bond of the Solo family once held has now been shattered, the New Republic is in shambles, and the Jedi Knights are in an even bigger hole now than ever before. My compliments go out to Mr. Denning for writing such a splendid book. Many will complain that it was wrong of him to kill off <blank>, but it was not his decision. Many of your reactions to the death were exactly what Lucas wants. As many other reviewers have said, "in war, people die!" Unfortunately, it had to be <blank>, but the Star Wars Universe will go on.
The one thing I have not liked in the NJO series is the role that Luke has played. Star By Star does a great job getting all other characters (Han, Leia, Mara, and even Lando) involved at some point or another, but Luke has held been held back, more so than others. It was good to see him take the first step in fighting back, but I would like to see him actually fight more (I know, it's not the way of the Jedi, but you know you all would like to see this). Remember how exciting it was when he charged in and rescued Jason Solo from the Vong in Vector Prime? Though it tired him (he is older now) and he won with ease, it was an exciting part to read. I only pray Lucas will allow future authors to get Luke more involved. If Jason's vision is of Luke being the ultimate symbol of good is to be true, he must start to show it and act out, like he did in the movies.
Lastly, I cannot wait until the next book arrives, to see how the Jedi's and New Republic can bounce back from such devistating losses. Dont' lose hope. Remember, the Rebellion suffered similar losses in Empire Strikes Back, and the New Republic even lost a lot fighting Thrawn, but that didn't stop you from watching Return of the Jedi or reading the last Thrawn novel...did it? Don't stop reading now. This is where it's supposed to get good.

Summary: How is this not the end?
Review: (...) By far the darkest Star Wars novel EVER written, Star by Star may have dug a pit which can not be escaped. Troy Denning has created the longest SW book to date, and rightly so for a story of this magnitude. (...) Denning is a talented author who has created a fast-paced novel not easily put down. With dozens of battles invoving everything from lightsaber duels to massive space wars encompassing tens of thousands of ships, this novel desn't lack excitement. With a 100-page action sequence this is probably the most imprtant NJO novel to date.

Star by Star gives the story of what has happened to characters like Vergere, Danni Quee, and the whole cast of the Junior and Young Jedi Knights series (...)
