Summary: Sad, and Depressing, but I still want more!
Review: I cried. There are very few books that can make me cry but this book did just that. Yes, one of the main characters died and it was extremely disheartening, but this should not qualify it as a "bad" book. I found 'Star By Star' to be an extremely exciting and suspenseful book. The characters all under went furthur developing which created a greater empathy between the reader and the characters. I know that many 'Star Wars' readers are neither familiar or even comfortable with the jedi children, but at seventeen years old I grew up with the Solo children and their comrades. As a result I know their characters extremely well and I empathize with the young adults and their struggle throughout the book. I do not deny that the characters did tend to waver from their personalities at times. This can be forgiven though when recalling that the characters the novel centered on, the youth, are teenagers. Teenagers are supposed to grow emotionally and mentally and therefore this lends the author some creative licensing. I did not give this book a higher rating because I believe the book would have been more fulfilling if the protagonists had been successful. I agree that the 'New Jedi Order' series is becoming increasingly dark and needs to have more uplifting plots and outcomes. However, this addition to the series has not detered myself from wanting and needing to find out what happens in the next installment of the series.

Summary: Great series, but can they give us a break?!
Review: Let me say first, that I love this series. It's innovative, great reading, etc. But after reading Star By Star, I can't help but think, "Man! Can they give these guys a break?! Has anything gone right since this invasion started? Even the little victories that they've had have come at a heavy price. Then after what happens in this book (I won't give it away)!!! I anticipate the next books as they come, but is it corny to hope for some kind of happy ending when all of this is over?

Summary: My 25 year experience is Ruined
Review: This book made me so angry I am starting a campaign to get the person fired that talked George Lucas into this. I own and have read all the books, even junior jedi.

The prior books leading to SBS suck you in, then Denning is ordered to kill the most compelling character in the EU SW universe. Sept 11 gave me enough reality thank you.

If you like Dark books with Sick twists you'll love SBS. I'm done with NJO until HE comes back.

Summary: Great!
Review: I would actually give the book 4.5 but you can't. The book was excellant, I read it in 3 days, with breaks for school. It is my favorite book in the NJO series because it was so gripping and I never got bored. HOWEVER, contrary to what others say it was not a good idea to kill-off a major character. I had to have a kleenex in my hand when I read how they died and even now I'm not happy with it. I would like to point out that there is enough death in our world right now and I read Sci-fi and fantasy novels to get away from reality so if major characters don't die in the book that's alright. For all those people who want people to die go and read a newspaper.

Summary: BETRAYED. WHOSE SICK IDEA WAS THIS?
Review: I have submerged myself in everything star wars for almost 25 years. I trusted you people to deliver good entertainment. This isn't fun! I feel like tearing down my giant hand-made poster of the SW Universe, and selling my 51 containers of SW mint figures and all the SW books and audio tapes I have purchased.

I feel betrayed and stupid for investing so much in a fictional galaxy far far away.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE FIRED OVER THIS. If it was George Lucas, shame on you George... shame, shame, shame.

George, remember when Bonanza Hiped Little Joes wedding for two weeks, then killed his wife, my family and a lot of other families never tuned in again. The show was essentially DEAD.

BRING HIM BACK OR I'M GONE.

Summary: ITS GETTING TO DARK. 1 MORE KILL LIKE THIS AND NJO DIES.
Review: I was determined to follow this NJO story line, but the ... just keeps on coming. What the editors will end up with is totally different people caring to stay with them. They will lose the fans that have supported the EU so far. But the books are trying for something that the movies were not.

Maybe the editors should try watching the old movie again and try and figure out what it was that created and sustained the fandom. Your future may die with your next kill.

I have to put up with the Pre-quel movies that have to be very dark. I'd rather not have to put up with it in EU-NJO.

Summary: What was the author thinking?
Review: I've never been a real star wars fan but I started to read the series and found it to be awsome until I read this book. How could the author have the audacity to kill Anakin?!?! How could the editors allowed Denning to kill a main character especially a younger one that could of spurred more books. If they kill all the important young Jedi Knights there will be nothing to write about. This book was a major disappointment.

Summary: Oh well... so we deal with it
Review: I am a die hard hard fan and have read all of the previous star wars books. And although like most you I crave the return of Timothy Zahn as well, we just have to deal with what we get. Star By Star is a good book. But there are many points i didn't like. But because of my loyalty I will keep reading. So stop whining all of you..... And the only way to solve this "New Alien" problem is to bring back someone Imperial. That has enough brains and cunning to put this lack luster enemey in his place. I miss the days of the empire. None of this would be allowed to happen if the emperor or thrawn were in power. Read the book and keep reading them. It has to get better

Summary: When sagas go dark.
Review: Never before has so much volumous, tacky writing been put
forward just for profit. Stop the omnibus, my ride through
the SW universe ends with Star by Star.

Face it people, none of the SW books are ever going to win a
Nebula. The writing by Zahn and Cube-McDowell was relatively
good, but most of the rest, especially NJO, could be edited
down to a handful of comic books. The continuing story was
once a wonderful, fanciful, idealistic escape. Now, it's SW
meets Spawn... the soap opera. Puh-leezz!

Look, if you want pithy, dark, and well written, go read
something like Simmons (Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion). If you
have nothing better to do but read a long, endless saga try
Jordan's tomes on parade. But, if you keep buying the latest
SW books, your addiction to dark pathos will be complete and
your supply will never end (although, personally, I thought
the bottom fell out on the market for tragic reality last
year).

Bottom line: If you want really good writing go elsewhere
(Orson Scott Card, Connie Willis, Heinlein, etc). I'm sure
Amazon carries them. If you want Star Wars fantasy, it isn't
in this or the other NJO books. If you want harsh reality,
and you're not grown up enough to have plenty of your own yet,
turn on CNN.

Summary: this is great!!
Review: when i started reading this series with vector prime, i admit it was a bit too dark for me. however now that i have kept reading the series i realize i enjoy this more than the original series. the constant tension of wondering whether or not a character will live keeps this series going. in particular when corran horn almost died in assault i just about stopped reading the series there. this book continues the tradition of star wars by keeping the audience captive with action, drama, and romance. another thing... to the person that revealed the ending... you just about ruined the book for me... as much as you didnt like it that doesnt mean you should do that ish and keep complaining.
